Not to be picky but theres no harm in bumping a old thread. In fact ppl will be very pleased with you if you do in the future.

Anyway im pretty sure there are a few devilstickers about, more than there was a while ago anyway (or there only just coming out of the devilstick closet).

I do a bit but i would call my self a devilsticker as im still very crappy.

Keep an eyeout for devilstickrussel, he rules the short piece of wood.

Well Devilsticks also happen to be my primary prop.
And IMHO I have recently rated myself as reasonably darned good.
Not quite master, but I can do a few things that my poor little mind says should not be possible, except for a beatuiful thing we call physics.

Devil sticks were probly the first performance art prop i ever picked up.
i have a nice set but i never got anywhere with them.

I saw nice juggling and took that up instead.

I would like to learn Devilsticks properly tho

sounds good

ive learnt most of my tricks from here: https://www.devilstick.org/devilstick.html

and

here: https://www.lunastix.com/moves/index.html

i think my fave trick is leaving the hand stick behind my back after passing behind the back, if you've got some bright hand sticks it really stands out and looks like its just sitting in the air for a moment, darn physics!

something thats good to try is some baton twirling with the devilstick...Toss it up and take both handsticks into one hand then catch the devilstick with the other and you can twirl away Then toss it back up smoothly and carry on devilsticking, takes a couple of attempts to be a really smooth and fluid transition but its not too hard and can catch people out.

There are also some nice instruction videos of most of the basics here https://www.devilstick.de/english/animationen/animationen.htm

Anything beyond the basics though starts to become very difficult to explain verbally. There is a lot of mixing and variations that can be done to the basics, and combinations thereof.

Step one, learn to keep the Devilstick off of the ground.
Step two, make it do stuff.
Step three, and this is the most important one, try not too look terribly surprised when it actually works.

Honestly a whole lot of things come simply from continously playing with the sticks, and when something odd happens, trying to repeat it.

Everything after that is merely polish.

Yeah i'd agre with that, definitely demands practice and patience. But finding a source of knowledge can show you things you just wouldn't have thought of on your own. Or watching others...

In the summers I often do several workshops (with the street theater company im with) aimed at kids in the community, they come along to the workshops for a couple of days or so and we teach them some basics. One kid i thought some devilstick basics to started to play about with it and improvised some moves that id not thought of before.

Russell: I think ive got wrist traps right, do you know of any sites with a decent description?

Hey Ds

Do you mean you toss the sticks like clubs in a siteswap way ?

I pratice the same when i go from a propeller say right, toss the devilstick in a 5 way, then the left stick in 3 and 1 for the quick pass hand to hand (before and behind back as well) and back to propeller. Is that what you're working on ?

About the EJC i was there (I've been working at the bar 8 hours a day also), and i've done 3 DS workshops, one more contact or static tricks and two from german, one about the furtner fish and one about some wrist traps. So i may have see you there. Were you the japanese guy ?

Salut !

DsAds the legend that is. Your name is allways coming up thanks for the complement for the wrist traps i definatly specialise in them they were like the first trick mushypea steve taught me basically. Tht vid is almost a year old now and i've got tonnes more. I'm currently working on some propellor stuff like Under the leg-over the leg each rotation (as allways a vid probably coming soon) and 'Flourishing' the hand stick 180 degrees between each roation.

Oliver thanks for the PM about the extra videos i don't think i can do it from my college computers (i'm only 17) because of all the extra protection. Thanks anyway though.

Ah ha i just watched your video again Oliver the "'Flourishing' of the hand stick 180 degrees" in my above post is actually what your are doing with your hand sticks as the credits come up, except i am doing it in between each roation of a propellor. my record is about five or six times in a row without passing out from brain overload

I also pratice this release of sthe stick higher. I toos the ds and the stick at the same time higher, then catch the stick and then the ds. I've praticed a bit a pirouette under this, it's even more impressive.

Unfortunately, I do not have many vids remaining after a recent HDD crash.

Hopefully I can get some new vids taken this year during my eventing season, as I am without camera myself for now.

If I can get some video taken and digitised, I will certainly put it up here for everyone's perusal.
