Posted:I thought sun was also required to make things green, though.

I'm expecting the entire country to go brown and mushy from a lack of photosynthesis any day now!

I'm calm now, folks, but thanks for the support in my hour of need! Fate intervened.... It stayed dry on my walk to Asda to get lunch, started raining just as I got inside, stopped as I walked back out the door having bought my lunch, and was dry the whole way back to work. I'm now waiting for it to rain again.

There is a God.... somewhere!

Posted:all you that have it wet cold and rainy dont know what annoying weather is like. try this:

monday its hot, tuesday its cold wednesday its cold and rainy, thursday its hot again, friday it snows. . .

ok, so its not quite this bad in nevada, but pretty damn close. there have been weeks like that. we've had it snow on the last two 4/20 as well as on fourth of july. but usually its just a hot, cold, hot, cold cycle all year long, with high winds almost everyday. oh yeah, and no matter how much sun we get, THERE IS NO GREEN!!!!! even the evergreens are brown. same goes for the smokeables around here.

You guys have weather. Cool.

of the... hot and sunny, every single day, hot and sunny. And they love it.

Posted:yeah, well its been raining in my part of Aus too, and im all pouty about it.
over centuries of drought Australians have developed a form of socialising that consists of going out into the weather, and walking around until you see someone you know. These groups can snowball into larger groups that will sit round in a park or something.

and when it rains noone goes outside and walks around, social lives drop to absolute zero, along with the temperature! IM BORED AND LONELY COZ ITS WINTER (and i have exams)

Posted:The problem with me is that I want it to be summer, and it isn't yet. And the worst of it is that I know that if I was home with my family in Oz right now, it would be perfect weather - Darwin has a nicer "winter" than Britain has summer!

I feel much better now, since I made it home without getting wet, AND made it to work again without getting wet.

I've just purchased a few plants in a sale here at work, and I also need some more potting mix (compost to you Brits) and can't figure out how to get it all home on my bike... of course I could leave it all at work overnight, but I want to plant them all this evening!

OK, now I'm just dribbling. I'm turning into a whinging pom, I swear it! <hangs head in shame>.

Posted:*lol* That's lovely, Cassandra! Thanks. I love those cute little gremlins... where do you get them from?

Talking about the weather is a cultural thing. I was taking an English class in Indonesia once so the students could get to talk with a real life native speaker (!) and we discussed the whole talking about the weather thing. We came to the conclusion that there really is a reason to talk about the weather in temperate climates because it's so unpredictable and if you get wet AND cold it can make you sick (especially in olden days when people didn't get as good nutrition as we do now) whereas in the tropics, the weather is just the weather and if you get wet it doesn't really matter, so they talk about other things as conversation starters. Interesting, Hmm?

I found those gremlins on a website ... don't remember the name but something like mysmilies.com ... I think !

good point about the weather / climate / culture issue...

i'd say it is also used because it is a safe discussion with no high risk of not being PC / embarassing oneself etc.

Posted:Bill Hicks is one of two celebrities who died in 1994 whose deaths impacted me greatly. Tool revere him as 'Another Dead Hero' and it's so true. Bill's comedy was black, but with nucleus of love: he was just so appalled at how shitty thw world can be. His material reflected this in his hatred of LA, Republicans, Religious Zealots, the military-industrial complex, homocidal prolifers, the commercial media, delivery was brutally honest.

He never cared what people thought of him
quote:I know what all the marketing people are thinking right now too, "Oh, you know what Bill's doing, he's going for that anti-marketing dollar. That's a good market, he's very smart." Oh man, I am not doing that. You fucking evil scumbags! "Ooh, you know what Bill's doing now, he's going for the righteous indignation dollar. That's a big dollar. A lot of people are feeling that indignation. We've done research - huge market. He's doing a good thing." Godammit, I'm not doing that, you scum-bags!

Quit putting a godamm dollar sign on every fucking thing on this planet!

"Ooh, the anger dollar. Huge. Huge in times of recession. Giant market, Bill's very bright to do that."

God, I'm just caught in a fucking web.

"Ooh the trapped dollar, big dollar, huge dollar. Good market - look at our research. We see that many people feel trapped. If we play to that and then separate them into the trapped dollar..."

How do you live like that? And I bet you sleep like fucking babies at night, don't you?"

"What didya do today honey?"

"Oh, we made ah, we made ah arsenic a childhood food now, goodnight." [snores]

"Yeah we just said you know is your baby really too loud? You know," [snores] "Yeah, you know the mums will love it." [snores]

Sleep like fucking children, don't ya, this is your world isn't it? His black comedy reached out to all our plights and through laughter presented ideas that questioned the crappiness of the 'civilisation' that we all too often just accept. An alternative way to see! You'd laugh your ass off but realise afterward that he was speaking from the heart - spite with soul!!

quote:I'm gonna share with you a vision that I had, cause I love you. And you feel it. You know all that money we spend on nuclear weapons and defence each year, trillions of dollars, correct? Instead... just play with this... if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world, and it would pay for it many times over, not one human being excluded and we can explore space together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. Thank you very much you've been great, I hope you enjoyed it... His material is still being performed to this day.
Rest in peace, Billy boy!
