Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.
So then:
Name: Vance
Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).
Age: 34 (35 now)
Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)
Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)
Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)
Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)
Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.
Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.
Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism
Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Well, Shadow still doesn't have a serious rival for the cabana boy position. If one doesn't show up soon before the beach bar is complete, it looks like he'll win by default.
One would think the girls in this thread would be more interested in seeing some of that baby oil wrestling and be out there trying to recruit more candidates!

we've already discussed that - because of my ADD and the fact that I have a wave machine! I am hiring the cabana boy so he will entertain women while I am out surfing so they won't get bored and go elsewhere.

Huh... well, my great grandmother and great grandfather were dutch. But that's only on one side. On the other, I'm scottish
Besides, what's the connection between the dutch and orange? I don't get it O.o'

orange is like their national color. The dutch airforce used an orange triangle for their markings till Germany rolled over them (their colonies, like Aruba and curacou, still do I think), dutch people paint their faces orange at sporting events, the dutch national soccer team wears it as their color (and I think "oranje" is their name?), the dutch version of the red cross is called the "orange cross", a dutch guy I know that studed here in south africa went to great pains to paint his bicycle orange even though he was only staying 3 months, the settelers in south africa of dutch desent who broke away from british rule named their country the "orange free state" (not as in not having any orange, but an orange, and therefor dutch, state that was free from british rule), the flag of the dutch resistance during WWII was solid orange, etc....
Basically, the dutch just have this huge orange fetish.
Apparently it is genetic if it has been passed on to you.
It has something to do with their history - the region much of holland is now used to be called Oranje and they had some royalty by that name as well (House of Oranje)? I'm sure some dutch person on HoP would be much better qualified to talk about this though...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the strain of cannabis known as Dutch Passion is also referred to as Orange Bud!
