I think poi is harder to learn (two hands doing different things at the same time) but staff is harder to learn to do well.

Damn, I love that second quote. Can I steal that?

i think poi are harder to learn and to perform but you should do it first because it makes staff so much easier to pick up

I have found poi a lot easier to learn.

The problem I have with staff is the fact that you can drop it! (and I quite often do if trying for throws) Poi on the other hand are attached to my fingers and dont come off when I get in trouble, sometimes I hit myself but I can normally pull out into another move

The other reason poi has been easier for me to learn is that I know people that have been doing poi for longer than me and it is a lot easier to learn when you have someone who is better than you to watch.

humm, silly question.

i think staff is harder to do well, but easier to learn.

yes you can drop a staff, but if you stop a staff, it stops, and doesent for example swing round on its own and hit you inna face.

also, i did staff first and it made poi easier to pick up, as i had got the idea of things reversing as you turn from staff.

like i said, silly question, peaple seem to be built for one thing or the other or both, in thoes oh-so-anoying cases.

Hmmm,

Although as Nix says it is easy to stop a staff I have still found that I have hit myself a lot more with the staff than I have with my poi.

I think this is probably due to the fact that I started learning poi first and have forgotten about most of the collisions I have had with them while learning. I got my staff, from HoP, as a Christmas present to myself last year but I was still in the learning zone with my poi so I didnt pick it up very often.

I look forwards to your return to Devon nix and I hope I can pick up a trick or two when I make it down to meet you

I picked up poi first quite easily, then picked up a staff and really got into that. Seemed to get it smooth quite quickly from what I learnt to do with poi.

Double staff - theres a whole can a worms!!

*Hits himself with a staff***... "OW!"

*Hits himself with poi***... "OW!"

I think staff is 'harder' than poi coz it hurts more.

But I think beamers are harder than staff.

And diamonds are harder than beamers...

The answer is both.

Staff is easier to get the basics with than poi.
Advanced contact moves are a lot harder than advanced poi moves.

But personal opinion, style and preference makes a huge difference to learning speeds.

From an absolute beginner's point of view I have tried both and decided to go with the staff for the time being. This is because, as was said in an earlier post, I can't get the hang of two hands doing different things. I also really love the feelings and movement i get with the staff. Maybe i'll work out poi later on but for now i'd like to get alot better with the staff first.

Joking aside, What Kyrian said fits for most people...

What Dom said is even truer, there will always be a few people who don't fit into the averages...

I think Staff is harder..only cuz I cant do it
POI, I picked up fairly quickly but, I now find myself watching others on how tight their form is and wondering "Do I look that bad?" Not that I think I am better then everyone..I just get anal about the exact postioning now..it's my new challenge so I over analize it to death.

on a further note...

for the first 6 months or so of practicing i found tricks easy to come by and easy to nail, get a couple of new variations every preactice and nail them within a few days.

As I got into contact the learning time incresed dramatically, a new trick every month or so and 2-3 months to nail them, just the 360 flatspin on the back of the neck took at least a month.

just thought id say...
