I REALLY have no idea...I had one that started growing out in the top left and when it got to about 3/4 of the length of the tooth next to it, it stopped! what the hell?

Now I got another one that started poking through my gums in the top right about 3 days ago and it's just starting to get irritating...

What's most annoying is that I turned 19 this year and my free dental treatment ran out... frown

I think it's something to do with the fact we eat like wimps.

Back in the day, x00,000 years ago, our homo-ancestors used to hunt, and bring home the kill, which consisted of a lot of meat. Either raw or cooked, this was a hard-to-chew piece of food, so they needed huge wisdom teeth within a large jaw in which to decimate the meat...

Now-a-days, we steam/boil our vegatables, eat cereals, and all matter of "easy/soft" to eat food. This in turn, reduced the need for our huge jaws, wisdom teeth, "cramping" our mouth with teeth, which is why a lot of people need orthodontal (spl?) treatment.

Or so I read. Makes sense though.

I assume they're called wisdom teeth as they come through around about the time you start to mature just before puberty (i think i was twelve-ish)

well they dont make me any wiser... ubbloco

Erm...wisdom teeth come out around the age of 18 or so i think...not puberty. My sister had all 4 come out between 18-20 and she had to have 2 of them removed i think.

Just going back on the theory of eating tough foods...why would wisdom teeth appear at around the age of 20 instead of along with other teeth at the toddler stage?...i say toddler cos i honestly don't know when a child should have a full set of teeth.

Hmmmmm... Interesting. I don't think that mine made me any wiser, although I must say that after having them removed, my head is not so clear (I blame the painkillers!)
Advice for those yet to have them removed...be diligent about putting ice on your cheeks. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours (except when sleeping of course) I am hardly swollen at all! biggrin

One real thing that scares me though...when I went for a check up after my first one poked through, they x-ray'd my jaw to give them a little record of what state my teeth are in and to see what stages the other wisdom teeth were in...I

I was shocked to see that both my lower ones were COMPLETELY horizontal i.e. growing INTO my teeth at the back...I never realised this could actually happen. I only thought that because there's not enough room at the back of your jaw, they grow out at a weird angle...but erm...90 degrees to the direction they should be growing at?... eek

Hey! Same thing happened to me! The top left tooth came out about 3/4 of the way and then stopped. Thankfully my others dont seem to be giving me problems though.

That's what happened to my bottom wisdom teeth. I had a stupidly busy schedule at the time, so I had to wait months before I could get them removed. During those months they conviniently plowed into the rest of my bottom teeth so I now have crowding. biggrin You might want to get yours out 'fore the same thing happens to you.

Mine are horizontal too... but they decided against moving them, as they were afraid of damaging a nerve, and they think that they won't move...

Having a rummage around my mouth with my tongue earlier (as you do), I discovered that I have the very small beginings of my wisdom teeth comming through on my top jaw.
They don't hurt, but on a search to find a small mirror to inspect my grown up grown up teeth I cracked my head on the extrator fan in the kitchen. Very ow frown
