Posted: Yesterday I made my first ever homemade bag poi's, man these suck...I used some old rainbow crap yarn, some newspaper, and some bright pink/blue computer paper, and I topped it off nicely with some saran wrap. For the first time ever I gave Poi a try, I tried/practiced the forward/backward/split swinging. I also tried the butterfly but wasn't even close to getting it! Today I was practicing and I figured out the butterfly. Next up is the low turn...had some trouble but I almost got it now...might have it by the end of tonight or by tomorrow (hopefully). Well, felt like sharing what I learned.[This message has been edited by phenaly (edited 07 December 2001).]

Posted: Ah the low turn... one of the greatest mysteries of poi. It's bizarre, I just don't get it. Supposedly a beginner's move. Supposedly one of the most basic.First time I picked up some poi I taught myself to weave, weave and turn, and 5-beat weave in about half an hour - without ever having been told such moves existed. Just reasoned them out for myself. Easy. Then I thought, maybe I can find out more about these things on the internet. And I found home of poi - with lessons! Great! But I'd already mastered the final lesson! However, there were some basic moves I hadn't considered, like chasing the sun and the LOW TURN. Been poi'ing for a year now AND I STILL CAN'T DO A LOW TURN! Am I a freak? I just don't get it! What magic is in that seemingly simple movement? It's like I got a blind spot, a mental block.Oh sod it! I'll just have to practice another year!

Posted: Hey there Mr Phenaly,I've just started about two weeks ago...made myself my practice poi with a pair of socks and a shoelace. It worked pretty well.Sounds like your doing well for your second day...I still can't do split swing properly, I can manage one poi forward one backwards, but both the same direction 180 degrees from each other is eluding me. Anyone have any special way to practice this or does it just take time?Kolong------------------Don't bolt your door with a boiled carrot...

Posted: Try wagging your head comically from side to side, or counting the beats in your head.I did this to learn split-time-cross, then had to speed up for weave. First time I got weave I nearly hypreventilated, but it worked...Anyting that helps you keep the beat is good, so get those hips moving!J------------------'Only ever use the pink kind...'

Posted: I only learned the Low Wave after months and months and months of doing poi. :P Here's how I accomplished it..(maybe it'll help one of ya)Before anything..you need to be able to do a butterfly in front and behind you. Then practicing going from a butterfly in front to going behind you. Once you have going from front to back and back to front down, in-time(the poi going to the front of back together)...then start practicing it in split-time. Rather than moving them both at the same time to behidn your back, stagger them. So that one poi goes behind, then the other. Once you can do this, you are >< close doing a low wave. You just need to keep repeating the back and forth motion with no butterfly beats in the middle.Kolong,I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 180o from each other...wouldn't that make them parallel? Are you talking about having one poi vertical, and one horizontal spinning them inside each other?------------------ [PLUR]-=Crazy Raver Dude=-
