BBC News reports that a fire performer's clothes caught fire, which then spread to his fuel container, resulting in the deaths of 10 people in a nightclub in Moscow.

Definitely something to think about when performing Risk Assessment.

Wonder when the Government's gonna take notice of the high number of deaths due to poor fire safety standards in most of their builds and introduce new laws to improve them as standard...

I was thinking that it was odd that the BBC account had no mention of juggling/breathing/spinning - in short, what kind of fire performance it was.

Reuters seems to agree with the Telegraph's version of events.

Sounds horrible though. frown

Yikes... Maybe I'm thankful for the tight regulations in New York City.

Russia had 17000 fire deaths last year (compared to 3000 in the US which has double the population.)

Yikes indeed.

It sounds like this is a much bigger problem than some unsafe fireperformers.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

There seems to be differences in opinion regarding the number of people in the club. According to the Telegraph there were 160, but in the Moscow Times it mentions only 100 people.
Also, they say that the barman may have been drunk.
Not only that, but the fire alarms AND the fire extinguishers didn't work in the club. eek

Let's hope that this travesty leads to stricter regulations on health and safety. hug
