Hello again! Edited for update. I'm in Melbourne now. Next few stops:
21st April - Canberra
24th April - Sydney
1st May - Brisbane
6th May - Rockhampton
14th-19th May - Tasmania
19th to 21st May - Melbourne
21st May - Auckland
27th May - Wellington
29th May - 9th June - South Island
9th June - 23rd June - Perth and WA
Let me know if you're free, want to meet up, or have a spare bed/sofa/corner near the fireplace
[size:6pt]Awright! I've looked into flights and routes and here's the plan so far:
1. London (start, end of Jan/beg. of Feb 09)
2. Montreal - visit some of my Canuck friends from the 1995 school exchange (and hopefully get free accomodation), or, should they be unavailable, just appreciate the city (3 days or so)
3. New York - maybe visit Molly? (3 days or so)
4. Potentially Key West since I got a very sunny invitation to go there
5. Nassau (so that I can sing Sloop John B like I know what I'm talking about. Must go on ship. Expensive since no friends in Bahama, therefore probably short)
6. New Orleans (Mardi Gras time. And apparently an invitation to the Gay Ball. This is getting better and better!!)
Depending on planning and people's availability, stages 2-6 can be swapped round a bit.
7. San Francisco or Vancouver or San Diego or North Carolina (depending on friends' availability and stuff. If you want me to sway towards either of them you'll probably succeed)
8. Honolulu (I don't have a friend there, so this bit is going to be expensive, but what the hell, I'll get free flower necklaces, right?)
9. Fiji Islands (because I can take 4 stops in that region of the world and think I should make use of them, again probably short). If anyone can recommend another stop in the SW pacific please let me know. Thx.
10. Auckland.
11. (make way on the ground to, maybe 3 weeks?) Queenstown and hopefully see lots of interesting stuff and HoPpers on the way.
12. Hobart (must see Tasmania since I loved Einstein Junior as a kid. Also must see Tasmanian Devils before all die of whatever infection it is they have. Around 1 week)
13. Melbourne. Rental car and looooooong road trip time (2-3 months. Wheeee!).
14. EITHER back to London OR Singapore-Bangkok-Mumbai (have very old penfriend in Mumbai whom I've been writing to since I'm 12 or so, would be lovely to finally meet her! On the other hand, I can't be away forever and adding another continent will mean I have to rush through other places and get a whole bunch of vaccinations and visa etc. Again, advice would be welcome. Might be better to do a decent Asia-trip on its own after the next contract.)
Of course I'll end up jobless and moneyless at the end of all this, but maybe I'm lucky and someone will employ me again.
Any comments, suggestions, requests for meeting me somewhere along the way or travelling a bit together, are welcome. FYI, I need to go in a westerly direction between continents, can't go to any more destinations within Europe, and don't eat onions.
I've been dreaming of this for ages, but postponed 10 years ago because unexpectedly uni wanted me to start straight away, even though I refused to take part in their application test/interview thingy (alternative was to start 6 months later and travel first, which I thought was going to happen, but as I said they wanted me straight away), was postponed in 2004 on account of me getting a PhD straight away, and then was postponed again last year on account of Still Writing Up The PhD And Needing A Job. So now it must happen.[/color]

I guess it won't work out exactly like I planned because of flight connections and all (the rules for that round-the-world-thingy are a bit annoying, and some spots they seem to have on the map but so far I haven't found flights that actually GO there), but still... the main bits should work out fine!

I'm possibly going to need the couchsurfing for some of the islands where I don't know anyone, otherwise I might have to spend my holiday working (ewwwwwwwwwww!)

Perth unfortunately is a long way from anywhere else in Australia. Its even a long way from other West Aussie things. But it does have me and some other lovely friendly spinner types.

What's going on when? Any annual big Oz or NZ or US events I could make between February and May/June?
Also for the Oceania bit the spots to visit are kind of easy (biggish places with many HoPpers and beautiful nature in between mostly). But for the US/Canada I'm still pretty undecided on the route, I'd like to see some more places, particularly BC (any potential hosts out there?).
I've toured the West Coast of the US before, but most places on the East or in the middle will be new to me

Something wonderful that happens around Easter is Confest, a big communal hippie campout in NSW that has been going since the 1970's. Believe it or not, it was founded by the then deputy Prime Minister. I've personally never been, but it sounds great and I probably should have!
The home site does not specifically mention the Easter one (as there are 2 a year... one a New Year....) but this one does. I think Bender and various other Hoppie hippies go....

ok, now that i've actually read the thread i have more to say. if you do want to come to tasmania your best bet would probably be to get a connecting flight for when you touch down in melbourne. depending on what you want to do with the rest of your aussie holiday its generally cheaper to fly over to tas(its an island, orright, yes?) than take a car on the ferry, although it wouldnt be unreasonable to fly to Tas from newzealand, get a car here then ferry back to melbourne, do what you want and continue on your way. cheapest way may be to fly both ways and use a hire care while you're here, and get another when you get over to melb.
flight options are VirginBlue or Jetstar , you should be able to pick up flgihts for about $70 each way if you book at the right time.
Ferry is The spirit of Tasmania, not sure how much it costs really, but as i said i suspect flying and having a car for tas then get a different one on the mainland may be cheaper.

. imagine an eight hour flight of turbulance? yeah. not nice.
things you should see given the time/access;
wineglass bay, cradle mountain, port arthur, tahune airwalk, hobart, wild life parks, up mount wellington, ashgrove cheese, anvers chocolate, just off the top of my head. oo the sea horse and platapus farm? they're kinda cool. boags or cascade brewery tour? beer? oui? go to the gorge, drop by ross or oatlands. a few things to look up and see if you're interested.

What MrM said ! This is not a fun boat ride, its a car ferry across some notoriously rough seas. Does the Roaring Forties ring a bell with you? The only reason to take the ferry is if you are bringing a car over. Otherwise, for sure fly.

What MrM said ! This is not a fun boat ride, its a car ferry across some notoriously rough seas. Does the Roaring Forties ring a bell with you? The only reason to take the ferry is if you are bringing a car over. Otherwise, for sure fly.

You MUST go past these 2 lakes (they are my favourite scenery in all of NZ) Did you see Lord of the Rings??? - it's Riders of Rohan territory but better than you see in the movie...
Hmmm, actually, maybe the other way around - from Picton come down the Kaikoura Coast (Whale watch) with a small detour to Hanmer Springs and then Chch. Hmmm... I know I'm weird and all, but I've never been on a ferry on rough sea and now that sounds rather intriguing. However it gets me to the wrong side of Taz. I'll think about it, there's so much time still...
George, I'm mostly into scenery really, but I'm also not sure if I won't be all sceneried-out by the time I get there! My friend sent me pictures of a lake with really weird colours (some chemicals or others, it looked fantabulous) that I'd like to see.
Experiences - well, to be honest, sometimes the best experiences I've had when travelling were just to spend a few hours with people I met on the way, I'm not out to bungee-jump off every bridge and party hard every night.
One of the best experiences about this trip so far was someone telling his friend about me coming to the States, who then told HIS friend about me coming to Western Australia, who then emailed me, being a friend's friend's friend after all, and offered to take me on a sailboat trip with his family and to introduce me to his son who works in a similar job to mine and might be more up to date with beach and night entertainment - whatever would I do without the internet and all the lovely people on it!!
Oh, and Doc's email warning me to leave my pyjamas on if I wanted to sleep on his sofa, of course.
I'll try and meet up with Pricklyleaf at some point, she should be in NZ around the same time... apart from that I'll email the people you mentioned closer to the time!
September's going to be horrendously hectic for me, I've just moved back to Edinburgh but will hardly spend any time here! But after that it'll be all-go for doing some proper research and making lists of places and transport and stuff.
Also thinking about freshening up my motorcycling skills, renting a bike would be much cheaper. But less comfy. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
