I have a collection of his shows. I recommend finding the Nikita series, 5 hour set, the whole thing is awesome. Might be just a little fast though. Also, Ayla - Angel Falls (Acosta Mix)Juno Reactor is somewhat tribal and very dark, not too fast. last i checked DJ Irene is hard house, not trance. if you want good trance check out Tunnel Trance Force Vol 1-16 and also Kontor Vol 1-10 (cd1 of each is more trancey, cd2 is more housey). also look for DJ Irish Vol 1-7. now you may have some NRG, but thats what i like to spin to most of the time. just do a search for NRG.DRAKEkatafunk@hotmail.comwww.geocities.com/katafunk

Well, napster is really whorin me, and i cant get any of that good stuff you guys are talking about...lame ass record labels need to blow my ass! btw, if you guys didnt see my post down there, check it out...its about a new way to use glowsticks, well, an addition to them...trust me, youll want to check it out. I've seen some really cool things in my days, but this is one of the best, AND ITS MY IDEA!!!! (ya, im the man)

Shibaki is right- those tunes are second to none.Anything by Robert Miles is fantastic- one of my personal favorites, also look into Paul Oakenfold (My personal Jesus Christ of elecronic music) and paul van dyk. Well - if you are interested in something a little bit more Cerebral than nu-NRG - look for Tristan (I think he has some releases on TIP or flying Rhino...I cant remember) - he does really nice psychedelic trance sets...argh - there was another thread recently on this topic...Space Ships of the imagination for good psy-chillout...JOsh

I completely agree with you KT, about the D n B that is. I dont feel that all trance is shit though, one just needs to dig deep for the right groove. As with anything...On the D n B tip, I just picked up a group called 4 Hero, its a mix of trip hop/drum n bass, and it is so phat. Other than that, I highly recommend Luke Vibert (aka Plug, Wagonchrist), Roni Size if you like the harder hip hop element thrown in, James Hardway!!! for the best jazz n bass mix, anything anything anything of Good Looking Records a la LTJ Bukem, Big Bud, Artemis. KT,I used to be a DnB head too...I've got CD's ranging from LTJ Bukem : Earth (Jazzy) to Ed Rush and Optical : Wormhole (snarly hard beats) to Roni Size : Music box (minimal) and I've even got some Psychedelic breakbeat stuff (with a lot of discs in between).Yes its versatile. No it isnt the good stuff I personally prefer (in a similar vein) Dub, Breaks, and Hip Hop to drum and bass...and I think the majority of the stuff coming out as 'Drum and Bass' now isnt on par with the gear that was being released say 4 years ago.Bring back the jungle is all I can say...this 2-step shit just gets boring.at least you arent advocating Nu-NRG Trance on the other hand...although I'm wondering just how much 'Good Trance' you've actually heard.Have a nice DnB bubble day Josh

Good thread...Ok, for the dummies, could someone please explain the different types of dance music? Having come from a punk music background (80's and early 90's), I listen to something I think is dance when I'm twirling, but don't know what genre it falls into. I twirl to some 'dance', but also to fairly heavy stuff like the Ministry..... as you may be able tell I've got no idea [This message has been edited by Ade (edited 10 May 2001).]

If you are not sure what to listen to check out the Distance to Goa series or The best of Goa Trance 2000. More than happy too!!!Trance - 4/4 beats, repetitive building beats, very little lyrics...House - Groovier, some lyrics attached, somewhat more downtempo, funkierDrum n Bass - Very fast, 160 bpm +, lots of drums, snares, and bass, with electronic textures overlapping, i.e. atmostpeheric etc.Drill n Bass - Hardcore d n b very fast very grating, acquired tasteJazz n Bass - d n b beats, jazzy funky beats mixed inTechno - Harder crazier sounds not so ready to lift you up but to challenge the senses musicElectronica - Leave out more of the bass, shady borderline, not popish, but it can near it, a la UnderworldAmbient - Brian Eno, Aphex, FSOL, no definitive drum beat, challenges brain, a mental journey taking you where YOU might want to goAbstract - Anything goes...Trip Hop - Hip hoppin lyrics fused with funky beats and soundsI dont do happy hardcore...That should get you started. Nu NRG?no I havent heard that particular album. I've only heard about perhaps...10-15 2 hour DJ sets played by Dj's who pride themselves on their uptodate 'killer' Nu-NRG collections.This includes perhaps 3-4 International superstar Nu-NRG specialists...(although - strangely enough - I cant remember their names...one was Karim? anyhow)I have to say - that the dominance of Nu-NRG in Adelaide, and some other crappy stuff that went on, has caused me to turn my back on the large scale Rave scene (here)...something I used to love sooo much, now so ...um.....soul-less.Why do I like psy trance? cuz at least here in Aus, it's still related to the spirit of ecstatic dance, and all the other spiritual aspects like PLUR etc etc that used to go with Raving back when I first got into it, those things that attracted me to raving, are being corroded by overly simplistic music like Nu-NRG...trying to turn the world into a Pokemon.BTW - I have the Distance to goa series...except no.8 (which I'll get soon )The destination Goa series also rocks.comps rock in general..it's like having 8 singles all on one CD (oh yeah...it *is* 8 singles on one CD )I'm actually quite surprised that you like both Nu-NRG and Goa...I dont think I've ever met someone that didnt think the two were mutually exclusive..Josh

JoshI don't really understand people who just listen to one type of music only. There is a lot of snobishness in the land of dance. I remember the days (when I was a young lassie) that all dance was just called Techno. Its so complicated these days with Hard House, Warp, Trance, Progressive Trance, Goa Trance, Two step, 4 step, Jungle, Drum and bass etc etc etc.Listen to what's good and don't get 'stuck' in categories is what I say.I love most forms of electronica,but trance is the type of music I listen to most.I listen to different types of music when I am in different moods, which is why in one day I might start off the morning with Kila, switch to John Coltrane in the afternoon, turn on Marilyn Manson if I get in a bad mood, listen to Yoji as I am getting ready to party and listen to St. Germain when I'm going to bed.I guess I got hooked on Nu-Nrg, cause one of the DJ's here in Akita is a kick ass Nu-Nrg DJ. His set's are amazing.I also love and adore Jazz,rock,Irish traditional and Indian music. I also dont understand ppl who only listen to one kind of music however, I dont extend this to mean that someone who listens to absolutely everything with no critical ear is super cool either.I listen to music that I find involving, music that is able to be explored, pondered, (and sometimes rips your mind out, breaks it into pieces, puts it back together and hands it back to you).I dont like Britany Spears. In fact I find that the majority of Commercial (top 40) music is not in the least bit challenging, and a lot of it is just plain offensive and formulaic. There are no surprises - and no thought provocation. It's like watching crappy daytime TV. just switch off, and have a stroll through pokemon land, there, now dont you feel better?There are exceptions...but not many So I dont listen to it, and I quite openly dis it. Please stand up for it if you can. I stand up for my belief in music created to be an expression of what the artist wants it to be...please - anyone tell me that Britany is actually interested in the music and not the money // stardom / / attention // power etc?I feel that Nu-NRG is the happy hardcore of the Trance family. It is the most watered down, least atmospheric, least emotive, least involving of the trance family (napster wannabes notwithsanding)...I find it soo offensive I guess cuz of how close it is (but so far too) to what I love the most...ie Psy trance. (its why they often make the monsters in the horror films slightly human, ppl are more frightened because they recognise the similarity). Nu-NRG is an abomonation! )The involvement thing is also why I've left most DnB behind too...it simply doesnt occupy my mind very well...once you've been taken on a psytrance imagination flight, you cant go back to...kick clap kick clap kick kick kick clap kick clap shit.(I also like intelligent Hardcore, although I havent bought a Hardcore CD for about 6 years). I love some Bands - Although, my most favourite ones are broken up;-Rage against the Machine-Faith No more.I also love Jazz...Miles Davis will always live on.I even have a handful of classical CDs!! for crying out loud! Believe me, I wouldnt dis Nu-NRG unless I thought I had a damn good idea about what it is.given all this, I can and do accept that there are ppl that are quite happy to listen to top 40 all their lives...and I'm almost getting my head around the fact that some ppl dont listen to music AT ALL.Josh-times have changed, we only have conditional PLUR in stock...

If you ever get a chance, listen to Bad company, ed rush, optical, pots, kemi and storm, breakbeat era (roni size mix, very hiphop orientated) Panacea, who is a german dnb dj, dark and great, pitchblack, ez rollers, hey it's all good brother, and i luff it heaps so yeah wikid! hip hops all good, very versitale as well. I only really listen to the UK drum and bass cause it's the good stuff, uk puts out the best drum and bass in the world and i think thats actually a fact, and the better thing is that new zealand is influenced so much by uk dnb, that that is what we get and hey im not complaining, so yeah. but as i said what ever does it FOR YOU cause thats wot its all about reallypeace KT"this stoned gabber was bought to you by KT"
