Ok, I need to scream in frustration for a second.

Came across this beauty while doing a literature search today:

I also found this gem in the same paper:

Someone shoot me. Now.

I don't understand a single bit of it. But do you know what really scares me? Someone on this board probably does understand this.

What idiot thought that allowing math into biology would be a good idea???

I think they do this just to make sure I feel stupid.

Today we had to move like 1000 weapons mostly M16's. Some dumb convoy for somebody else armory came back and we got stuck doing all the work. Me thinks its because my Sgt wants to get in the pants of the other armory's SNCOIC. hehe

I dun like doing other peoples work.

So thats my bitch for the day.

Ohh and I have answer to all 3 questions.

1) 42

Well, at least you guys can make me smile about it. Now, my roommate, being a physics major, can help me sort through this. Oh, except she's leaving for Santa Barbara for the weekend...

but you are planning to crack the code for the basis of life and write up tons of stuff that looks like this yourself, before the Nobel, right, Mike?

oh, with your room-mate's help, of course

Know AardvarkOnAcid who occasionally posts on this board? My roommate is his girlfriend. That would be very poor form on my part.

I hated stuff like that while I was at Uni, it was the stats modules that were the worst, full of crap that I'd most likely never need or that I could get a computer to do instead.
I actually had to do a module that had some stuff like that in. It was entitled 'Chemistry as a foreign language to Biology students'.
They're damn right though, chemists talk funny
(and usually smell even funnier )

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I get most of it, but I'm not aware what the "stalk" stands for, or what the desired results mean and required measurements come from. Hell, I gues that means I don't understand it either

Does that make me smart or stupid or the usual place in between stupid and crazy?

Ok, Charles, if you really wanna know...the article is about a model for biological membrane fusion. Biological membranes are basically liquid crystal arrays of ambipathic molecules called phospholipids that form a bilayer with a hydrophobic core and two hydrophilic faces.

In living cells, small membrane-bound spheres, called vesicles, are used to transport materials from various compartments within the cell to others...or sometimes out of the cell. In order to do this, the membrane of the vesicle must fuse with the membrane of the target compartment. But how this happens is a mystery.

One theory is called the "stalk" model, where the intermediate between the unfused and fused states is a "stalk" formed by a merging of the two cytoplasmic leaflets while the two lumenal leaflets remain unfused. This reversible state can either resolve to its unfused state or to a fully fused state.

Should I shut up now?

No no, keep going that's cool.

I even get the general gist of it.

Besides, you could just be pulling my leg.

SO if you aren't, how can you apply a formulae to molecular interaction that people aren't certain about yet.

Or are the process fairly certain, but the actual triggers for the fusing themselves are unknown.

Hmmmm (goes back and looks at the formulae again)...

Could I ask what your general impression is of me?

Am I tall or short?

Academicaly educated or life-taught?

A druggy wino or teetotaller?

Etc etc etc... Might be intersting to see how i come across on the site...

And, as I am a masochist...I went to look at the link but i need a subscription to the site...not sure I really want to fork out dollars and cents with my credit card before I even see the site.

Any other freebies that might be worth a visit

Well, you're educated enough because this made sense to you. You seemed to mention some biological education, which is rare in general.

You're married.

And you're a wino bum with bad breath. Oops...wait...that last part was for someone else.

:::flips through files:::: Wait...who's the wino bum with the bad breath?

Correct on most counts...

I haven't had any formal biological education (gee that sounds rude doesn't it?), but find that aspect of science interesting enough for me to search it out every now and then. A lot of the formulae and chemistry (not a huge difference between them sometimes) make rudimentary sense, which doesn't mean i get the whole relationship at once, but a number of the processes are fun to see.

Especially the work being done at the moment on supposedly 'dormant' genes and how different cells use the same proteins in varying ways...It all seemed so black and white a few years ago.

Someone with your achievements I truly do envy, although I realise it wasn't handed to you on a platter...

What's your favourite new discovery to come out in the last two months? )please dumb it down a little

I get the general gist of it, but i'm sick of calculus and i want a lot of papers that give me numbers to start plugging in before i play with that mess! Honestly, it looks like chem problems i used to do but with a different set of variables. i could learn to do it given a few hours and some instruction in which thing each symbol goes to?

but i hate math, i'm going to be a language or a liberal arts major....

would haev done pharmocology, but i started getting sick of chemistry.... i just don't care enough!

lol, ok i'm done.
