Last night I had my first light-up with the staff. It was great. Admittedly, my repertoire of moves is limited, and I had a few drops, but I also had a lot of fun and didn't burn myself (which I was worried about--those staff burns can be pretty bad).Trying out a new apparatus is a real rush. I'm not saying that poi has become *boring*, but I don't get the thrill of exploring new territory from it. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

First off, the topic sounded really dirty. (maybe I just have a dirty mind rolleyes )On a more serious note, firestaff is way different than poi. The flames are more intense, they're closer to the body, and it's more intimidating to work with on fire. I have several small scars to prove it's power. When people ask if I'm scared of the fire I tell them "I've really lost my sense of fear and gained a huge respect for its power. I stay within my limits and be smart."I would just urge you to do the same. Happy Spinning------------------ -M@TTKeep the fire burning.

Congrats Adam! hope all went well, and in my mind at least the tangle issue never comes up with staff...I expect to see a few pics and a your prescence on the staff boards too now (he e he). But I guess i'll have to swot up on the poi terms coz I get the feeling you'll probably be talking poi-speak a lot too.(rushes off to practice some poi more, if he doens't get bored again and then pick up some staffs like usually happens)------------------Charles (AKA INFERNO)newdolbel@hotmail.comhttps://juggle.co.nz/fire/fire.html

Well done Adam!!!I must admit my first preference has always been staff, & lit poi always hold more fear for me. I am not a natural at poi & have to practice really hard to get the moves. Also with staff I kinda like the idea that the flame is out there *points arms to either side* and isn't going to randomly fly back in your face.So carry on staffing (all puns intended)...R.

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

Not being burnt don't mean nuffink. I've never been burnt by my staffs. Got a few bruises where I caught them with my face instead of my hands once or twice. But no burns.M@TT, I think you should take note of the number of posts adamrice has on these boards. Well in excess of 700. This makes me think he may have been here a while and, possibly, has encountered fire before.Not being nasty. Just thought I should mention. BTW, if you get a chance, try and find some pics of him spinning poi. You wont regret it.

Charles--I've posted some pix. Check out:https://www.crossroads.net/a/writing/firedancing.htmlCantus--Oh, I've had a few of those face-catches when practicing too. And my elbows are barked from slightly mistaken trajectories on btb passes.One way that staff is a lot like poi is in the need for subtle control (this is more true with staff than poi, perhaps): I've learned it doesn't respond well to manhandling--I need to make fine trajectory changes at exactly the right moment. I'm getting there.Matt--I appreciate the concern. I think I've been prudent. And yeah, I think you must just have a dirty mind. {g}

Adam, I started staff myself and highly enjoy it. I made my staff about a month ago and lit up for the first time last week. It felt good. It's frustrating to start on something completely new where you are not sure what you can/cannot do. After 1.5 year of poi, when i can basically spin poi with my eyes closed and the chains feel like an extension of my body. I almost take it for granted and forget the efforts it took me to get to that level.But it's great because it's challenging and i want to learn again. I was getting lazy with poi. I'm moving sideways to staff too (swinging clubs and maybe juggling too!) and it's nice to be doing something fresh, but also kinda fustrating to be back at square one again!

Nomad--That's exactly how I feel.I think I'll see some cross-pollination between my staff and poi in the future (Dangerboy once said roughly the same thing). I know I've already got a head-start with the staff thanks to poi, since I've got a better idea how to move my body around.I've also started practicing with double-staves. They're hard! I've got, like, two moves with the doubles.[This message has been edited by adamrice (edited 15 March 2002).]

Cassandra, no staff to Paris, that thing is just too big and I don't have a bag to carry it. How do people who travel by plane carry their staves? I know you can take some staves apart in 2-3 pieces. For the ones who don't have that fancy stuff and just one 4 or 5-foot long stick, I heard of didgeridoo or gold bags... Any other suggestions?Nomad------------------A.N.T.H.E.L.I.O.Nwww.anthelion.org

You can call dibs on girls? Whay didn't anyone tell me this before!!! If you turn around and touch the ground at the same time does that beat double dibs?Nomad, I think in other threads there's been suggestions from either Charles or Adam about making a cheap case for staves.

I can't find those threads for some reason? Maybe I'd better moderate myself to search again...nah...I've found just buying five or six poster tube sections (with two end pieces of courses) from your local art store is the easiest way to make a staff case. You can superglue the pieces together but it is a good idea to leave both ends able to be undone, makes for an easy to clean and more versatile container.I have heard a few horror stories of bags (i.e. non-rigid containers) where at the end of the trip the staff comes back badly bent or even broken!I'd recommend a rigid case design for bus or airtravel where the staff goes in a different compartment with other baggage around as well.------------------Charles (AKA INFERNO)newdolbel@hotmail.comhttps://juggle.co.nz/fire/fire.html[This message has been edited by Charles (edited 21 March 2002).]
