Well, I suppose I should get round to making an intro thread for this newfangled board really, so here goes:

Name: Rory

Sex: Male

Age: 24 going on 6

Favourite Bands:

Super Furry Animals
Leftfield
Lemon Jelly
Reel Big Fish
Bjork
Loads of stuff really.

Favourite Films:

Batman
Spirited Away
Delicatessen
Amelie
Dr No
Cheesy war films (the guns of navarone, the bridge on the river kwai etc....)

Favourite Books:

Are you Dave Gorman - Dave Gorman
Das Boot - Lothar-Gunther Buchheim
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Anything by Bill Bryson

Favourite Thundercat: Hmm, Cheetara. Or maybe Tigra, since he had the cool whip that could make him invisible.

Favourite Toy: My huge purple muppetskin poi, or my balloons, I'm not sure.

That'll do for now. Feel free to post inane semi-gibberish in here, I'm sure UCOF would do anyway, so you might as well join in wink

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

It may interest you to know that I've got the whip bug I met up with Rory over the weekend and nailed a couple of cracks- I cannot wait to get to fal and play some more- I might even be getting my own from good Mr Bov biggrin

Bov, does this mean that you've gotten yourself a whip and are striking fear into the hearts of your neighbours with it's mighty, sound barrier breaking cracks?!!!???
i certainly hope so biggrin

Oh and hello wave
How've you been doing, been up to mischief?
Thanks muchly again for sending the whip book to me, it's coming in very handy.

Oh yes, I now have a whip biggrin

It's a 5 foot cow hide stockwhip and is nothing special (the handle's pretty horrible for a start), but it works well enough for now. Doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours though wink

Are you going to falmouth and/or bristol?

Fantastic, when/where did you get it? You're going to have to show me what you've been working on!
Unfortunately I can't make it to either my friend, the laws of b*sterdlyness have forbidden it. I am, however, hoping to make it to the Wales/England border meet.
Are you still planning on going?

I got it at the EJC, so I've had it for a couple of months now I suppose. I've been mainly trying to get all the cracks I know forwards, backwards, horizontally and with either hand, which is taking a while.

I've also been trying to make my own whips from nylon, which is working pretty well when I actually get my orders of nylon delivered. I've just had some more arrive so hopefully I'll be making another one before/during falmouth for Mr Chutney.

Yes, I'm still planning to go to the border meet, so hopefully I'll see you there smile

Making them eh?
Bit ironic that you sent me your book on making whips and then decided to make some for yourself ubblol
Still, I'm not complaining. I have a bit of mending to do on one of my whips (same procedure as Merlin helped me through at Play) but I haven't felt comfortable about it yet. Some of us will just never be as good at practical construction as you Bov

Hey Bov

Godd to see you at the weekend dude.
Thanks for helping me out with my whips. I've been fixing and oiling them today after the lashing they took over the weekend.
How's your whip making research coming along? Have you found how to make them heavy enough?
In addition to the whips we were discussing over the weekend, I was thinking it would be really cool to have a mini whip I could carry around with me smile
Do you reckon we could get a whip that was say 2' from thong to cracker end that would work well?
I'm thinking I might just have to have a go at this whip making stuff. Paracord seems to be pretty good stuff to use and I really should be able to find an army surplus store around here, there's enough MOD land!

While I remember these are the earplugs I got for myself during whip cracking/loud noise events.
Quite expensive for a pair of ear plugs but they'll last for I don't know how long and I reckon my ears are worth it smile

Hi House of Mill.

As Bov seems to be busy, I can help out. For the basic umbrella (which I taught him if my memory is still trustworthy), inflate four 260 balloons and burp slightly then tie.

Make one balloon into a cutlass/pirate sword (small one inch bubble, then a loop, then pull the remaider of the balloon almost all the way through the loop). This is the handle.

Then take the 3 other balloons, find the halfway point of each, and twist them all around each other in the center. You should now have a six ended star-like shape.

Twist the middle of the star shape a few inches down from the end of the sword, so the looped end is at the other end and looks like the curved handle.

You should now have a star on a stick!

This is the hard part over. Now arrange the 6 balloon ends so they are flat likes spokes on a wheel, with the handle being the axle (pointing perpindicular to the wheel spokes).

Take one of the balloon ends and find the halfway point. Twist it in half and hold the end.

Take the next balloon end to the first, find the halfway and twist an inch or so of the end of the first at that halfway point. You should have a triangle made from the first balloon end (2 sides) and half of the second balloon end (1 side with one loose balloon bubble sticking out).

Now repeat the process, take the loose balloon of the second end, and twist it to the halfway point of the balloon next to it (3rd balloon end) etc etc .

Keep going all around until they are all joined up.

Voila!

Here's a link to BalloonHQ for how to weave a balloon fabric that I wuse for top hats. Just need to add the brim and either close up the top or wedge a spiraled 260 into the top.

gymping, a good weave stykle for making top hats

Let me know if that helps, and feel free to check out my gallery too for much much larger creations... smile

Yeah, I was testing out the automatically embedding links.
I don't like them, and making the link bad is the only way I know of stopping it - is there a better way?
