Re: bringing sites down I think +) means by linking to them on a popular thread, hence loads of people hit the link and baddabigboom! Slashdot as goosed several sites by doing that.

I may have missed the fact that you already understood this and am now making myself look foolish..ah well why change the habit of a life time

hey i think that's what happened to poor Tomo when we linked a thread to his groovy comprehensive baton twirling moves videos site.
he had to change the folder name so that the original links wouldn't take his site down....

Just a suggestion... but when you post anything there's an intermediate page before it goes back to the thread you just posted in. If you had another link on there to take you back to the forum that thread is in it would certainly save bandwidth from me... because I have to wait for the thread to completely reload and then go straight back to the forum, which is a total waste of your bandwidth.

to be honest i'm impressed its only 120gb a month. If you are running a site with a shop and the more traffic you have the more likely you are to have sales, then 120 pounds a month bandwidth fee (120 pounds if you're getting ripped off by your ISP that is) is extremely cheap advertising.

Oh i agree, there's some awful american hosters who buy 1u of rackspace then cram on 1000s of sites onto a single machine and flog it off at rediculously low prices which they can't possibly honour (avoid any ISP offering unlimited bandwidth like the plague), but i was talking about colocation. For example:

Me and a housemate have a colo machine in the london docklands (telehouse north) as part of a server cooperative - a bunch of 50 or so geeks (mainly with unix admin jobs) who get together and buy several racks and links/bandwidth to use for their own projects, game servers, development etc (for instance I amongst other things currently run the irc interface/bots for HoP on it). Towards it we pay 40 quid a month for 1u space, which includes 40gb of transfer, then each extra gig is 1 quid (ie cost price). It's our server and we can access it 24/7 if there's a problem. Physical security is extremely good, security guards, cameras, proximatey swipe cards etc. Network security is as good as you make the machine - it's our hardware, our OS, our software etc. The room has aircon, fire supression gas stuff, UPS and the building has generators with 24 hours worth emergency fuel. Service is in the form of DIY (ie drive there and do it yourself), or if a machine just needs rebooting we can ask anyone who is going in that day to reboot it, or if the NIC is down we can access a term server for it. Speed from our machine to the switch is 100mbit, i'm not sure the total bandwidth for the coop on all it's links (our main one being the BBC - www.bbc.co.uk is in the same room! ), but it must be upto 1 gigabit - i've never had a problem transferring from fast servers to it at almost 100mbit.

Basically its a non profit org run by clueful people, so we get our rackspace and bandwidth at cost price, not a hosting service run by idiots. There's no tech support as such, because no one is paid, but everyone is friendly and we've yet to have any downtime that was due to failure of their system/routers. It's so cheap that personally i'd never use a hoster again if i can help it. I don't know about in nz, but there's quite a few simular groups in the UK.

This post is by no means a dig at HoP or telling you you are being ripped off, because i know no details about HoP's servers, how much you pay etc, i just wanted to show that it is possible to get good quality hosting at 1 pound a gig (or cheaper if you need hundreds of gigs and pay for a link) using server coops. I do know what you mean about cheap commercial hosting services thou, i've also used them in the past and i wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

well i'm not married (far from), but i do agree. I've thought about using the machine for hosting commercial sites (serveral of the other machines in the rack are used for, eg https://www.bytemark-hosting.co.uk),
but for the sake of some extra beer money each month, now i have outdoor hobbies and a social life i don't think i can be arsed to drive upto london at 3am to fix a broken server . Unix boxes just don't have the same appeal that they used to. I'm also weary about giving friends accounts on it, cause they have a tendency to be greatful at first, then expect you to be free tech support 24/7. I do offer people free bandwidth off it for mirroring large files thou, because i've always managed to get free stuff out of the internet (open source software, free shell accounts etc) and I'd like to think i can give something back. But it is a hobby, and there's no guarantees

I'd just like to point out that SmallBoy only sticks his tongue down your throat if he wants to, and shouldn't be given up as a prize or indeed threat.....

Plus which he's kinda sulking about that fact that Jon was sooooo traumatised and is now scared of talking to guys - xxx - especially 17 year olds that are in denial -
