Quote Wikipedia:
Popping (a.k.a. hitting) is a funk dance and street dance style based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body, referred to as a pop or a hit. This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with other mime-style movements.

Popping is also used as an umbrella term for a group of illusionary dance styles and techniques that are often combined with popping to create a more varied performance. The effect of popping as entertainment hinges on an almost-surrealistic contrast between the human dancer and the unnatural moves performed.
Having been amazed by the combination of popping and contact juggling recently, i've been feeling inspired to try it myself.

After searching the net for a bit I've found various performances, practice sessions and tutorials and gave it a go (to very little success so far...)

Does anyone know is their a "Home of Popping" or something similar or is it more split up? I've not found a website that gives tutorials or somewhere people share what they learn?

Where can we find more tutorials?

Popping conventions?

Anyone combining popping with poi, staff, etc?

What about mime? Where do all the mime artists hang out?

Whats your favorite popping video?

Mmm...

Last night, I actually hit myself out... ubblol

I went to a concert here in Huelva, and met some other poppers!! They were good, and they were locking and breaking as well. it was fun! Being in the middle of a circle of people watching you all get down was wicked! I was knackered by 9:30, though!

looks like I can learn more stuff while I'm out here after all!

Do these things happen all over europe?

I'm still trying to slide around the floor, and making shapes with fingers and hands over here.

Waves have become way more isolated...

practicing on your own for a while, and then meeting up with others is a wicked technique booster. poppers, unite!!

Not so long ago i saw a video called "japanese animation dancer tozawa3" - japanese guy doing lots of craziness to a track made from street fighter noises. It was on some popping site that i can't remember and also on youtube. unfortunately its disappeared. Did anyone manage to d/l it before this happened? If so please give me a shout, i'd love to see it again.

Yo Ronan!!

Welcome to the world of Boog style. smile

Now. What he's doing there is a bit hard to explain in text.

Fingers crossed, I'm going to BJC. You should go too. If I meet you there, I'll teach it to you. smile

There's all sorts of things going on in that vid. The main one's I could pick out are some sort of Skeeter Rabbit style footwork, some shuffles and boog rolls, and even some old man as well...

I should probaby give an update on my progress as well, whilst I'm here...

I've recently the discovered the joys of Toyman style.

Cobras/Snaking. Makes sense. and starting to look good too.

The old man. Got it, after so much trying it and looking stupid.

Boog rolls. I *think* I have them.

Worked out some more tut things...

got a few 'o-flex' things down too.

My hits are starting to get really hard...

and foot work has improved. I used to limp around a lot from when I sprained my ankle really badly about five/six years ago, but now, I hardly have any pain there at all. And it's all thanks to gliding.

Still having a few issues with my posture.

Locking is hard. not really ventured into that world much.

Currently working out how to do all these things whilst contact juggling, in a way that looks better than just me holding the ball and popping.

Yo!!

The ministry have set Ministry TV.

it's a random youtube feed (and some not so random youtube feeds) designed to show juggling videos from the web.

There's a channel specifically for Popping videos. biggrin

I don't know why tonight, but I've started thinking about taking this up. If only I can fit it in with the 5 other dance classes I already do.

Has anyone tried going to classes, or is it easy enough to pick up off the web. I'm thinking of going to a class, but it would take up my only free night of the week, so I'm not sure whether or not to do it.

Oooh, Holly, be careful. this stuff is more addictive than Crack.

As far as classes go, all you'll find is the odd workshop that is on for a week in various places. nothing regular.

To start off, the best thing is to meet up with a friend who has been learning too, and get them to divulge secrets. smile

The thing with Popping is, the movements themselves are quite simple. but it takes ages to get things looking gooooood....

There's a regular class in Manchester, but I don't think I can really make it. I'll have to drop something else first.
