hey people,
now like a lot of you, i dont really have time to go down the gym, but i want to keep myself buff ( cool rolleyes ) and i've heard there are a set of excercises where you use your muscles against each other to build them up/maintain them does this sound like anything anyone has heard of and if so, what is it called so i can look it up, cos it'd be really useful for a quiet afternoon at work to pass the time

Well, the word that popped into my mind was isokinetic excercises. Tho, if that is the word, I'm thinking of a very old definition of it (or maybe I just grabbed the wrong word).

An example would be pushing your hands together repeatedly to work the chest and arms. Tho, this was a very very old form of excercise that eventually went away because it was either not efficient, damaging, or there was just much better options. Sorry, I don't remember any further specifics on the excersises.

edit: Ahh.. this definition makes much more sense.. I now believe what I was thinking of was isometric excercises. The issues with isometric excersises are somewhat consistent with what I remember. Google for more info.

Could be 'dynamic tension', sometimes used in martial arts, where you basically move parts of your body whilst opposing muscles are tensed.

Examples would be extending and bending your elbow while imagining there's a weight in your hand, with the biceps and triceps tensed.

Could also be 'isometrics' where the musles are tensed by pushing against something immovable (eg a wall) for a set period of time.

Google searches should turn up loads of info, but, if I were you I'd do weights instead.

Forget the gym, you don't need it; instead buy a set of dumbells with adjustable weights, then get a book of basic exercises (or look on-line, there's loads there).

That's all you need (although a few extras like a doorway chinning bar are very useful) and, in the long term, it's going to be better than isometrics or dynamic tension.

The key is consistency and enjoying the training, time can be minimal, 3 sessions 0f 20-30 minutes a week are plenty.

Indeed. That would be fine, if his goals were toning, or adding a little muscle mass. To really become... "buff", like he wants, it'd require a little more dedication, far heavier weights, and access to machines which would work muscle groups he would be unable to at home.

Vampyricacid, since you have little time for the gym, I'd advise the home weights set, as Dave has stated, but remember, a HUGE amount of building bulk and muscle is within the diet. Feed yourself with rubbish, you'll have a large waist, nothing more.

What's 'buff' mean? I'd assume it's being muscular and toned- extra muscle mass, but not to the extent of competitive bodybuilding.

I'd argue that you need neither gym access or massive weights to get 'buff' in that sense- you definitly don't need 'machines' of any kind; people where building musculer bodies well before such machines existed.

True, but they're far from essential for building a reasonably musculer body.

Main problem with machines, in the context of the requirements stated in the original post, is that, to access them you need to get to a gym.

Which, if Vampyricacid tries out some home dumbelling, and likes it, may be something to try.

All I'm saying is that; given-

IMO, a set of dumbells are the best option for now, and, used correctly, will give the required results.

I watch no tv, have brilliant cardio fitness, but kind of weak muscles and still a touch more weight than i really need.....

more proof that food is important as well (as my diet is very nrealy crap for a mess of reasons).

But yes, what they say about the weights is good. If you're doing anything particuarly strenuous (and as you head towards buff it sounds as if you are) I'd recommend getting a chance to check it out with a professional (doctor or trained gym staff or some such) before you get started, just make sure you're making sense.....

And UCOF, I know muchly of sit-ups and other general ab-working exercises, but surely thats not too hard to find info on? ^_^?

Some gyms are cheap and offer fast work out plans or something along those lines, it might be worth it to check out a gym. As for the TV thing, instead of sitting down with a bag of chips or whatever, do some push ups or crunches or something. When I watch TV I usually stand there and hula hoop. Isometrics is what you were thinking of, it requires a lot of dedication and is just a pain in the bum. In other words, google it. Most people are in your situation and you're bound to find something for people like you.

Don't mind me, just passing through.

For abs, traditional exercises are generally considered to be discredited- sit-ups (especially sit-ups with the legs held down), leg raises etc have been found to not involve the abs that much, and some of them can cause damage to the back.

'Crunch' type exercises are considered the best, and take the form of variations of laying on the ground, and curling the head/shoulders slowly off the ground, holding, then slowly going back again- it takes practice to be able to do them properly, and when you get it right it feels nothing like a sit-up.

But- for a 'six-pack', muscle mass is less than half the story- low body fat is far more relevant.

I've got very developed ab muscles- most of the stuff I do involves them (eg unicycling, yoga etc), but I also have a fair amount of fat over the top of them, so, no six-pack for me.

Look at photos of Bruce Lee- minimal muscle mass, yet his extraordinary degree of low body fat has been the inspiration of many top bodybuilders.

Sumo wrestlers carry a lot of muscle- the nature of what they do means their abdominals are probably more developed than those of competing bodybuilders- but they're totally obscured by the fat they carry.

Since Dave has mentioned certain abdominal exercises that can damage the back, this is something people to neglect. They go "lop-sided", working the front, and not the back. Strengthening lower back strength by performing hyperextensions etc, can assist the abs in torso stability and strength.

Always stretch first!

Use heavier Poi. Do more Poi!

working lower abs: lie on your back and, keeping them together (!) raise your legs in the air, and then lower them again, keeping your shoulders on the ground.

Simon: be careful of anything that involves putting your wound under pressure (i.e crunches) for a while
