Plans are starting to shape up for Burning Man... Fire Conclave groups are working on their routines, and theme camps are starting to plan their calendars... Figured it's about time to start the HOP thread!

Probably not next year either.
But maybe 2007.

I'm jealous of all that are going already!

This year looks like it's going to be even more complicated than last year. All I know is I gotta spend some time with Orbit working on technical stuff instead of just blazing by each other as we usually do. smile

Cody, I found the thing to do is to show up at Center Camp around 2pm (Burning Man is the only place where I wear a watch)... There's usually at least a couple of good tech spinners there. I think there's been a lot of good networking among American poi spinners over the last year thanks to tribe, FireDrums, and a few travellers, so hopefully we'll all learn some interesting new things at BM from friends and friends-of-friends.

I'm still planning on being there.

We should pick a place for the HoP meetup. Picking a time never seems to work out there, too many distractions. Maybe something like any week day at dusk in front of the man (6 o'clock). A good central location and an obvious flexible time (for busy people without a watch).

hey kids--

i shall be there with bells & probably not much else on! tongue

really looking forward to meeting some of you i only know by HoP names and icons.

my camp is called "the fallen" and we'll be making masks/plaster casts of people's faces. swing by and make a mask with us -- on thursday or friday we'll have a procession & burn them. i have a fantasy of people lighting their fire toys off the fire of the burning masks. maybe in front of the "dreamer" installation?

hug for now; a real one in person in b.r.c.!

Like last year, I plan to compile a list of interesting spinning events on the playa... but I would also like for there to be ONE place/time when we can all get together.

Here's a message from Anna and Ryan of the Phoenix Project. I think this will be the place to be. I know there are tons of other things that everyone wants to do on the playa, but it would be nice if spinners made an effort to stop by and say hello.

Written by:

Hello from the Phoenix Projekt, the Scrappy-do of L.A. conclaves.
>
We are having an absolute blast forming our little family of fire freaks and figuring out our show. And as stated before, we really want to see what you all are cooking up as well.
>
And even moreso, we want to meet you. We want to create bonds and ongoing friendship with fireslingers from all over the world.
>
So come on over! Thursday night, after we all become world record holders with Ted's Oceans of fire brilliance, we'll be opening up our camp, (a subset of Freedom Community) to any and all fire people, especially those with FC shows. We're having a night for fire spinners, hosted by fire spinners, because of fire spinners. You're our favorite people, because you're like us. We get it.
>
After all the FC's have run their shows, we'll kick on the beats and have an open jam spin. We want everyone to spin. From the one who picked it up that afternoon to the baddest asses around we hope you to share whatever it is that you're rocking at the moment. We have connections to Lorin Bassnectar, The Breakbeat Buddha, OOAh, and a few other of the dirtiest Dj's on the Playa. We're hopefully going to enlist a few of them, so the music will be as hot as we are.
>
And we'd also like to address something that interests us greatly. The division within the fire community. We are all very conscious people, who study an art that requires a lot of soul to excel within, but yet we are mired in the same muck of cliquishness, pettiness, and ego that pervades the "real" world.
>
Why is there not one comprehensive fire tribe that we all check into to see what's new and important?
>
We believe we can choose to transcend that. And come together to advance our artform to the next level. We can share skills, safety ideas, business platforms, and everything else that we could ever possibly need. We can become our own best resource.
>
We can and do deserve to make a living doing this. There are enough possible gigs out there if we create as whole, rather than opposing factions. Fire spinning feels a lot to me like both skateboarding and snowboarding did a long time ago. And look at them now. I was once one of a total of four Boarders on Mt. Hood. If you had told me that it would be an olympic sport and a giant business, Well, I would have thrown my green rubber fishing boot at you.
>
Anything is possible. As this discipline grows, there will be hurdles. Some punk wil burn down a trailer house and blame it on the Mutaytors. If we come to together and set ourselves up to succeed, we'll succeed. I don't know about you, but I like success. It appeals to me.
>
So we'd like to offer the invitation to let go of past differences, to come together under the shared love of the baddest bitch ever,
Fire.
>
Welcome home,
>
See ya thursday.

That sounds like a blast!, thanks for posting it Orbit. Just my kind of thinking. I'm sick and tired of the stale old grudges and egos some have. BM is about letting go and accepting all.

Noddy, Just go! We will all go with you smile I'm sure you would be more than welcome to join any of our camps. You don't have to bring too much either, we look out for those travelling from over seas.

Somehow i always manage to miss Burning Man.... its seems such a shame especially since most of the year i live incredably close in the grand scheme of things.
This year is looking better than previous for making an appearance, though i still haven't managed to get a ticket, so i may, or may not see all of you there ; )

ma'tina -- if you'll be running around with andy i'm sure we will cross paths in brc. though it's hard to say that anything is for sure out there, chances are good. do come and make a mask! i'm hoping to get a good showing of fire-folk as my vision for our procession is that people light their fire-toys off the fire of the masks and have ourselves a little session of chaos...

faberge--i do indeed fancy meeting up before the big event! pm me closer to when you're in town & i'll give you my contact info.

yay!

Blueboy - I'm reserving my Thursday night for the Phoenix Project gathering, because I'd like to watch all the different groups perform their choreography. Maybe you can burn the masks at the fire there? I'll talk to you some more about this in person, I'm sure...

Sweet, I'm 90% sure I'll be out there this year, just need to get the plane tickets and find a fun theme camp.

Have we made any headway on organizing the HoP gathering out there? I want to meet all the HoPers I missed last year.

I'm going to be at burning man.

last year, I spent a ton of time spinning in center camp. this year, I'll spend a bunch, but probably not as much. I mean, the bagpipe player taking requests only knew sweet child o mine, not welcome to the jungle.

I'll post the whereabouts of my camp, prometheatrics, is as soon as I know it... last year, we had a smallish fire show / open spin at first star every night. we also had a mirror stage. we also had a large viewing screen made of rainbow glasses material.

I expect we'll have all these things again.

I intend to be at the phoenix project thursday and I'm not sure what else.

Just got my plane ticket but I'm still looking for a camp.

Seriously, lets set up the HoP gathering now, time is almost up. Thursday night at Freedom Camp for the Phoenix Project should draw the most fire spinners and may be our best chance. I know blueboy is planning a mask procession then but it can't be a complete overlap.

HoPers attending... cut, paste and add to it:

burning dan
Cody
Dr Nick
Fabergé

I do, however, live near sacramento, if anyone is around those parts to chill pre or post burning man (or it sounds like san fran might be the place wink

ill be there. just bought my ticket today. the HoP meet last year was a bit of a bust. only three or four showed. granted there could have been more but you couldnt see more than 8 ft. due to the dust storm that evening. im looking forward to some good spinning this year.

if anyone orders Merlot, i'm leaving.
