how is it that humans being the supposedly highly evolved creatures that we are cant even photosynthesize our own food? we have to run around continually searching for food, whats up with that? i mean really trees can do it why cant we? hehe in case your wondering why the topic im hungry and have run out of snacks frown

Well we do photosynthesize a bit - we turn chlorestol in to vitamin D in sunshine.

Anyway, I'd have died from lack of food the way the weather is over here at the moment, so it's a good job we don't.

We've already evolved to have opposable thumbs, which lets us build and use tools - I reckon our next stage of evolution is to use those thumbs and tools to build robots that'll do all our foraging and cooking for us smile wink

Screw photosynthesis, how come we didn't get any of the cool evolutionary things. I mean I guess apposable thumbs and large brains are nice, but why can't we have like, acidy spit, or usable tails, I mean come on, can you IMAGINE all the possibilities with a tail that you could spin staff or a third poi with? And why not apposable thumbs on our feet? We gotscrewed man...

I have a (very contraversial) theory that humankind is heading for another evolutionart split over the next few centuries.

EDIT - oh yeah this is chat - sorry ignore me if you're here for a chat or are easily offended wink

IMHO the seeds of an evolutionary split of 'un-natural selection' have been (and are being) sewn.

Seen the film gattaca?

this could occur concurrently on several levels, leading to a global sub-human and 'master' race. Two that stand out are (over simplified for the point):

1. Natural health/wealth selection.

The brightest and best looking tend (ON AVERAGE!) to become the wealthiest and then make babies with other similars. Visa versa (ON AVERAGE)

2. Un-natural 'sperm/egg' selection or genetic intervention

This will happen no matter how much it gets banned.

The wealthiest will be able to garuantee 'excellent' genetics for their offspring somewhere in the world. The un-wealthiest won't be able to afford a tettanus jab or an education.

Long, long term implications:

One race destined to be 'inbred' to extinsion.

One race to be super-intelligent and good looking, with infinite positive and negative associated issues (including no more natural birth - babies head bigger than mummy's pelvis).

One (vastly larger) race of 'mongrels' which will live healthiest.

Jo.

Hope it don't happen.

mcp, chlorophyll absorbs blue and red and not green. The light from the sun is mostly red and blue, meaning that the plant can take in most of the energy using the chlorophyll. Something like that anyway, I'll have to look it up again.

chloropyll is green
anthocyanins are purple
ratios of the two in the leaf change the colour of the plant

purple bacteria have wierd bacteriochlorophylls that seem to be a law unto themselves (they can do it in the dark I think eek )

chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light and so it looks green
so, in conclusion, the grass is not greener on the other side, but it might be purple, and the sky is undoubtedly overcast with a chance of sleet later in the day ubbrollsmile

Photosynthesis is not very efficient if we did photosynthesize all our food we wouldn’t be doing much running around. So we are lazy and let the plants do all the hard work for us. Some of us are even lazier and let other animals convert that stuff into more energy efficient stuff and then eat them

i think that the split will happen as well, i also think that it is going to be enhanced by neural enhancements creating a vast intellectual split whereby if u cant afford the enhancements you simply wont be able to compete. berkley uni have had an interface between neurons and machines for several years now last time i look (hehe back in the undergrad days) it was viable it just needed some minaturisation. professor kevin warwick at reading university has had a direct neural connection made in his median (if memory servers) nerve and has been able to activate devices with his mind and percieve different senses (used infrared to deterect distance while blind folded) its only a matter of time before memory upgrades and other brain augmentations are available. resulting in a vast difference between the haves and have nots

I'll chat, Ben. Great topic.

Another thought or two on inncreasing levels of mutation:

We are now exposed to more chemicals, radiation, and genetic tinkering than any species (including human) at any time before.

We can keep almost everyone alive and fertile now with medical technology (partial elimination of 'survival of the fittest')

Different qualities are looked for now in a sexual partner (intelligence/charm/wealth over physical/health genetic strengths)

Jo. smile

PS. I think the first potentially huge mutation that could - just - about - survive, will be full conscious body control / understanding... there are cases like that cropping up and surviving all the time.

The reason that plants are immotile is because they don't need to move. In order to photosynthesize, you need a large surface area and a rather low caloric requirement. Humans would kind of suck at it. We need to be able to move around to find what we need to eat. Plants don't because they get it by sitting in one spot.

Jo, I am also concerned about the effect of modern medicine on human genes. That said, as we alter our own environment, we will adapt so that we are no longer capable of living "in a state of nature." It's already happened. Our species, since its dawn (and even our ancestors) have relied on tools and fire. Much of our adaptations are not genetic, but cultural. Parents not only pass on the genes required to physically make a human, but also a set of skills required to maintain one. These skills are in no way encoded in our DNA. There is no "fire" gene, although we probably have genes that damp our natural animal fear of fire. There also isn't a "bow-and-arrow" or "plow" gene. As we evolved and advanced, we adapted ourselves to our modified environment.

However, my hope is that somatic gene therapy, while a Pandora's Box, will also solve many of these issues.

Who cares about photosynthesizing... what I wanna know is, WHY the hell do we EAT and BREATHE through the same tubes?? Whose big idea was THAT?! I mean honestly-- we've got these tubes you need to get air through constantly in order to survive, and what do we do with them? We shove GOO in them! And why do we use the same tubes for waste disposal AND reproduction, may I ask you that? Not even just the straight reproduction stuff even, but the sex stuff-- why on earth would males have a G-spot up the back end?? WHY?? Honestly, who comes UP with this stuff? It's BS! All those random genes recombining at random for millions of years landing us with stuff that doesn't even make any damn sense. What the hell are hiccups for anyway? Or how about yawning? Or sneezing? Why do we PUKE when we have viruses, when obviously nothing at all is wrong with our food? Why is it that humans have one of the longest and most dangerous gestation/childrearing processes in the animal kingdom, and yet for some sick reason we're fertile almost all the time? And what's with menstruation anyway? Since when does it make sense for survival to go around dribbling blood all over the place for a week straight? Other animals don't do that! Except maybe horses and dogs, and THEY only do it for a few days a year!! Most animals don't even ovulate again until their current young have grown to a certain size-- but humans can have babies so often it kills them because their body just plain hasn't recovered. Not to mention, an awful lot of animals out there have a built-in option to re-absorb fetuses if their environment is too high-stress or unsuitable for offspring. Humans sure don't get that now do they?!!

We have to cook our food because our digestive system is too weak to protect us from diseases and parasites. We have to put on clothes because we've got no fur to keep us warm or protect us from abrasive surfaces or the sun. We have to build all sorts of crazy things just for shelter and tools to get anything done. As a friend of mine said when we were watching AvP: "...Sometimes it sucks to be soft and pink."

Why were we not built with some kind of automatic overpopulation safety measure? Many animals will eat each other or even throw themselves off cliffs when their populations become too dense. We don't slow down even with all our vaunted intelligence that ought to mean we'd KNOW better. We're about as well-engineered as a virus that always kills its host. It's ridiculous.

Of course the only thing to do is to get off our asses, quit whining and gibbering, and take responsibility for our existence and hit the books for genetic engineering. We've been playing god for a long time, we may as well try to do some GOOD with it. Somebody fix these stupid dual-purpose tubes, for a start!!

I agree that in the super-super long term Humans will be nigh-on super beings. It is throughout these early and medium term phases that I'm concerned. We're playing with what we don't understand generally in a controled way - but there's always the odd mad scientist or cult...

I don't care WHAT those nuts try to tell you in school, eating and breathing through the same tubes is plain DUMB, and no number of biology degrees can say otherwise. Tube/entrance, whatever, the same orifice is bad enough, like hell that's anywhere close to sanitary. (and no, I ain't got no sex life, but don't change the subject! smile )

Oh yeah and then there's the stupid fact that male genitals are all dingly-dangly out the most inconvenient spot ever. Yes yes, I know it's because the sperm have to be kept cool in order to live, but WHY?

Hey, dolphins don't have either of those problems! They don't have to cook their food or build shelters or any of the rest of that crap either-- and they get to spend most of their time just hanging out playing in sunny blue oceans. Who needs photosynthesis?!
