Round our way they have employed a load of Gurkas to drive the busses, you can tell which are them cos they sit up straight, very straight. (and have machetes under the seats to decapitate naughty children)

I agree Andy. I wouldn't want to be a Bus Driver in this day and age. They put up with abuse and threats of violence all the time. They work Crap shifts. They get no respect.....as this thread shows......for doing the job. They have farcically tight timetables to try to adhere to in old buses that aren't reliable (Wales has some of the oldest bus fleets in the country). Not all bus drivers are great but by no means are they all nasty and evil. I use the buses daily and find most of the bus driver freindly and polite. Maybe thats because I get on the bus, smile at them, say good morning, hand them the right money, and thank them as I get off the bus at the end of the journey.
In south Wales right now there is a huge bus driver shortage. No one wants the job. There have been too many nasty incidents on the buses involving violence, drugs, robbery....... who wants to have to deal with all that. They don't get paid enough to make it worthwhile. So spare a though for the driver thats on his/her shift at pub chucking out time, picking up all the drunks and fighting youths, having passengers vomit on them then threaten them when they tell them they can't get on the bus. Would you be able to do the job and smile?

Things are different in South Wales, I understand. My problem is with inner-city bus drivers, like here in Brighton,

OK, I understand that bus drivers have it bad. But they do sign up to be bus drivers. Bad traffic, stuff like that - it's part of the job! To say they're allowed to behave the way they do because the conditions are lousy is a bit like saying teachers shouldn't have to take care of their pupils, as long as they turn up eventually and read out the curriculum.
And the wages aren't that bad, considering it's basically unskilled work - it's far more than minimum wage!
I just think, even if I'm wrong and they have awful jobs and no pay and they're forced to be bus drivers, there's no need to be so harsh to pretty much everyone else. I admit, there are a few nice ones, but my experiences of a life of public transport have shown they know exactly what they can get away with, they see themselves as their own boss, and they treat people like because they know they won't complain, they know that if they do they can come up with an excuse, and basically they know that their job's secure anyway because no-one wants to be a bus driver, and passengers don't have an alternative.
I just think it sucks that people are allowed to act in that way to other people, whatever job they're doing. I wouldn't be that unreasonable to another human being.

Fair enough
Sorry if I've offended you, Skull, or anyone for that matter. This was just meant to be a light-hearted discussion about one of the annoyances of public transport - persistantly impolite bus drivers, which I experience frequently.
