Hey there everybody!
I'm a student at London uni and I live in Cambridge during my holidays. I don't drink cos of epilepsy but I do smoke (though I'm trying to cut down on that). I like all sorts of music but not country or manufactured pop. I love drum and bass, funk and chill, and I love my poi!
I first saw fire poi this year when I went to a party after my final exams at uni. There was live Drum and Bass being played on the roof of this house, and some people doing fire poi. I thought, 'I gotta get me some of those..' and despite remembering only about 5 names out of a possible 50 from the party, I remembered the poi!
Anyways, a little over two months ago I started using some comet poi, got addicted, and basically have been practising for about an hour a day since then. About a month ago I bought monkey fist fire poi, and practised with them to get used to the weight and feel of chains. Then a little over a week ago... FIRST BURN!! was a little timid at first, but then did wraps constantly when burning and blackened up my hoody and jeans until i wasn't worried about the flames anymore, now I feel free to revel in my pyromania! I LOVE POI!!

Edit: now updated to include basic info

Name: Guy

Location: Cambridge

Hometown: Born in Boston (the UK one!) moved to cambridge 5 years later

DOB:27/3/81

Age: 24

Sex:Male

Occupation(s):unemployed but soon to be a student yet again

Favorite Food(s): Chinese (especially Dim Sum), anything sweet, anything chocolate, mild curries, mushrooms with blue cheese

Favorite Color(s): Not sure really but I seem to wear blue a lot, and i like to have red colours in my room

Toys: poi, staff, nunchuks, flag on a pole (wielded sword style), rope dart, cj ball

Hobbies other than the obvious: shoddy guitar playing (and singing songs about pot when no-ones about), experimental cooking (very occasionally), reading, drawing on my hand on long journeys, listening to music all the time, worrying about the environment, playing compulsive computer games, photography (occassionally), watching Kung fu films (especially the badly dubbed old ones) and skinning up.

Education: BA Ancient World Studies 2:1, waiting for my MA in Public Archaeology marks, about to start a TEFL course hopefully

Favorite Book(s): Dark Materials trilogy (Philip Pullman), Armageddon the musical trilogy (Robert Rankin), Dear Monkey (abr. Alison Waley), the Dark is Rising books, Satanic Verses (although I've only managed to read it once I really liked the ideas in it)

Favorite Movie(s): Any old school kung fu, Iron Monkey (kung fu film), Most Jackie Chan films, Hero, Catch me if you Can, Orange County, Cheech and Chong: up in smoke (funniest stoner movie EVER), Shaolin Soccer, Gladiator, Donnie Darko, Starsky and Hutch (the recent one), The Royal Tenenbaums

Favorite TV show(s): Lost, 'Allo 'Allo!, Dad's Army, Diagnosis Murder

Plans for life in general: still working on that one, interested in media, teaching, archaeology and the environment. Go figure.

Favorite Music Artists/Composers: Far too many for me too write them all here! Quantic, Fila Brazilia, Banco de Gaia, buddha bar type stuff, the Levellers, James Brown and a lot of other music from the seventies, also Aphex Twin and Squarepusher.

Favorie ice cream flavor(s):Mint choc chip, raspberry ripple, mango sorbet, lemon sorbet, who am I kidding? I love all Ice cream!

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella? Nutella first by a long way then vegemite then Marmite, but I don't hate any of them really

Fair do's! just in case that was a serious comment about the guys from Balls! I heard (from Tommy) sarah was having her party on the 25th same as me, so figured most people would rather go to somewhere in London than Cambridge. Still, I actually had more booze at the end than when I started! shrug says something about the drug of choice for my mates I guess! wink

I drove to the train station and back to pick up Karen yesterday, with my dad sitting in the car next to me. No crashes with fish and chip vans, or anything!

Theory test booked for next friday: question is, will I be ready for a driving test before Falmouth?

35/35 for the multiple choice theory qs
48/75 for the hazard perception bit (that's a pass by 4 marks - whew!!)

didn't have the counterpart to my license, picked up the paper bit of my old license by mistake. Was let through with a grudging 'you need to get your act together' and the bloke seemed quite surprised that i'd passed! rolleyes

AND... I dropped by the museum shop where I worked for Xmas, and they gave me £50 in HMV credit! Score!
Am now the proud owner of the complete Indiana Jones trilogy! biggrin

My driving is getting better, but I got hit by a bicycle on a pedestrian crossing today, while on foot! frown

I have a rubber skid mark on my jeans now (seriously), and friction burn to match. Plus a nicely developing bruise on my right arm

LMSP: no worries. It's not like i'm still having nightmares about people going 'RUBBBBIIIISSHHH!!!' in the night or anything wink Twas good to meet you and Mynci at last! See you both at PLAY! hug

Gayle: While at the BJC in the juggling hall on friday, I got a call over the PA saying 'can Guy Smith please call his mum' redface Gits! anyway it was mum calling the leisure centre (mobile had died) to tell me that the people I applied to for summer TEFL work were asking me to come in and teach czech kids monday to thursday as a supply teacher. Pretty sweet deal, it's only 9-12.30 with a half hour break and I get £15 an hour. Looks like I might just about cover the amount of money I spent at the convention on toys! wink Hope you and Neil are recovered now, and btw, I can't access the alfapoi gallery, can you link to it for me? Cheers and thanks for ubershelter during Falmouth 5!
hughug See below for more details on what happened today in class

Karen: missing you too hun, the first day was pretty mental, all the Czech kids kept on speaking Czech not English: they were tired, I was tired, so we ended up playing the famous person game for three quarters of an hour. Still I survived and now I get a chance to prepare for tommorow!! Still a bit scary though!

Gayle thanks again for a fantastic weekend! biggrin

Blu: Good to see you again! Hope to see you at Strawberry fair! smile

Linden: Come to cambridge!! I saw a street today called 'Linden Close' so you are hereby ordered to come and have your photo taken next to it!! wink

Latest News: I have my driving test on the 8th June, I have another job starting monday for two weeks (teaching for 2 hours a day) and 'Poi in the Punt' is now scheduled for mid august, check the cambridge thread for details! And I'm trying to decide which city in China i'd most like to teach in, so far it's between Guangzhou (for the food and ease of travel) and Xian (for the archaeology and it sounds pretty cool)
