Sorry, but i just have to rant about this; this person's stupidity and arrogance just wont leave my mind.

today in class we were discussing Australia's resources, of which a very important one is water, and a guy in my class (who is a walking encyclopaedia and who looks down his nose at everyone, including the teacher) says that it doesnt matter cos who really needs it.
to which i replied that the farmers do for a start.
and he says "we don't need farmers"
so ask him what he eats and drinks because milk doesnt just magically appear in our supermarkets already in cartons.
and he says that we can just buy everything from China!

now this guy isn't socially smart enough to play the devil's advocate, so he was just being an arrogant, stupid (and i also think) racist moron.

after class a kid whose parents are farmers had a go at him. and although i dont usually condone that kind of behaviour, it was deserved. Australia's economy is heavilly farming based and if it wasnt for our farms we wouldn't have the quality of life we enjoy now. just because this wanker lives in a trendy seaside town in a house worth $1M and he looks down on the other guy because he lives in the outer suburbs, and no doubt looks down on him more cos he's the son of farmers...

i can't stand people who are that arrogant! and who just assume that we can buy everything from China, because no doubt he thinks that he is racially (intellectually, socially *cough-he wishes this the most-cough*) superior and therfore why should he get his hands dirty when someone else can!
ARGH! the NERVE of this guy!

he sounds like a bit of an idiot-if you didnt eat the food grown in your own country then surely your economy would suffer? and you'd have to export everything, but would there be the demand? maybe it would have to be cheaper, so you'd lose money and then, well, crash?
and where would you get tim tams from? or crocodile steaks? or all the other wondrous foods only australians eat, and make?
it would be a sad day for me if i saw an australian without a fosters or ostrich burger in their hand...

I'm doing a degree in Journalism. The college i attend is (in my opinion) pretty damn good, and certainly seems to be rated reasonably highly by employers in the field. All the people on my course are good writers (not all exceptional, but all good) which is why this is that much more scary.

Whilst in a discussion and the conventions of the sports news genre in modern journalism (yawn) one of my class mates declared:

"The reason there are so many black players in the NFL and NBA is because when we went to get the slaves from Africa, we picked the biggest and strongest ones, and most black americans are descended from slaves."

Once the shouting had died down (happy to say the class is predominantly left-leaning) i asked him if he genuinely believed it to be true, and astonishingly, this otherwise fairly intelligent guy said that, yes, he did believe that.

This guy, in about two years, will probably be writing for a newspaper near you.

Be afraid.

While I don't know much about Australian economy, from what you said, the guys a nimrod.

Dependence on domestic farming can be offset only by other exports. A country can have very little farming, but must make up for it in other areas of export, such as natural resources or manufacturing. Switzerland probably doesn't depend on farming as much as some nations, but they make up for it by exporting the 3 C's: Chocolate, Cheese, and Cookuo Clocks. And let's not forget their infamous banking system...

But I have yet to hear of any country that can forego their farming populace altogether. Farmers are usually the backbone of the citizenry, whether they grow crops or raise livestock, and have some of the most demanding jobs around.

I have one of those know it alls in one of my language classes almost slapped him one in a class the other day when he wouldn't shut up while the teacher was explaining something.

All of us were trying to concentrate on what the teacher was saying and, him, thinking he knew better, kept interrupting with things that didn't have anything to do with what we were talking about.

You could just tell all the other students in the class were getting angry but he wouldn't take the hint.

*sigh* I guess we all have to put up with idiots like that at some time in our life....besides if we can get through putting up with their idiocy in our classes I guess it will make us better people even if they never end up growing some form of brain cell.

and he says that we can just buy everything from China!

ha! wow!
i surprised he wasnt ripped to shreds for this comment. yeah come on everybody lets give control of our basic foodstuffs supply to china!!! good f*ckin idea!!
China has been economically growing silently (not boasting it to the world making it less predictable) for the last decade and the new government-capitalism (capitalism that is in the governments and selected upper-classes hands, thus giving very little advantage and innovation to the common person but boosting the economy by generating huge revenue from investment money from the west) that they employ is not going to stop that. The workforce is cheap and is used to being kept quiet by an authoritarian government. that means that somewhat soonish they are going to have immense economic control in this world. I honestly think that after the US overinflates itself economically with all this fake growth (generating economic activity through wars, and unjustified defense spending) and somehow lose power (no idea how but its going to happen, could be economically quite ugly IMHO) china is going to be there to take the role of superpower for a while. So the guy suggested that australia ties itself economically and ultimately politically to china, having then to follow their lead....
but thats just the view of a dropout politics student.
I study international economics now!! wooo!! fun, fun, fun!!!

you should have said that to his face and the idiot would have been quiet for a day or six....

well im off to ponder on how to take over the world.....

everyone is entitled to their own opinions, no matter how much we may disagree & how stupid they may seem. I peronally believe that everyone has a purpose in life. For some, that may be picking up trash others leave lying around, cooking, farming, you name it. Without all these people doing all these jobs, the world would be a mess. Even drug dealers & theifs give the police a job! Ok that one may be a little far fetched, but if there was no lnger crime just think how many people would be out of work because their jobs depend on it! Who knows, maybe that kid in your class just likes to argue or feels some need for the attention he gets from comments like that, but without people like that in the world what would we use as a model of what not to act like?

just wondering... how can you import from china without exporting goods for the capitol needed to purchase? This guy in which you speak doesn't seem as smart as he thinks... to truely be smart means looking at the picture as a whole, look at the peach like it's an edible fruit as opposed to glancing over the skin. this guy may be able to name every mammal who lives in australia but I bet he couldn't figure out how to get his finger out of his ass.

I think if all Aussies were measured up to these standards we'd all be disapointing. I've never even seen a croc or emu in the wild let alone eat one. Though I did try some Kangaroo the other day but it wasn't really for me.

"The reason there are so many black players in the NFL and NBA is because when we went to get the slaves from Africa, we picked the biggest and strongest ones, and most black americans are descended from slaves."

That is quite a bold statement to make indeed!
I wonder if any studies have been done to see if there is any truth in his words.

From a purely scientific perspective (with my reasonable knowledge in genetics and evolution) selection for strength, endurance, resilience to extreme conditions and overall toughness would have occured.
This would be the case for 3 possible reasons:
1. The scum that kidnapped the Africans new they would get a better price for fitter looking individuals.
2. The horrendous conditions that the Africans had to endure during the trip across to America would have killed any individuals that were not very strong, fit and healthy.
3. I'm sure the Americans would have simply killed any Africans they could not sell rather then buy them food.

To then link the selection pressures placed on these Africans to their impressive sporting achievements of today involves too many assumptions for me to bother going through. It all comes down to assumptions........... and it is these assumptions where holes could be shot in his theory and where it could be tested.

I am interested to hear which part of this man's statement you guys find offensive??

I get the impression this guy is the type of person that doesnt think before he speaks, if he posed this theory in a more diplomatic manner maybe people would pick up on the interesting scientific idea he put forward instead of them going with the group mentality and crucifying him as arrogant, racist and stupid....

(Incidently I do not even consider "race" an issue here, in fact I dont even consider "race" an issue in MY life at all. I dont see myself as one race or another, I am a human being, I dont see why any other physical characteristic of myself should matter to me. If it matters to anyone else, that's their problem, all I can be is me!) Children dont see race....

I find genetics and evolution very interesting, I would love to hear everyone elses ideas on this!!!!

Oh and lastly before I go back to studying for my biochem exam...
Has anyone heard of the concious gene theory based on the synchronisation of menstrual cycles of female groups in the animal kingdom???

I think this needs its own thread...

Hi Rogue,

Water is an extremely important resource for a dry continent like Australia, especially as it is getting dryer due to the greenhouse effect, and in the last few years towns in north west Vic have run out of drinking water. So, I think it’s a pity that some farmers waste so much water growing stupid (unsuitable) crops like rice and cotton, which means we are basically exporting water.

We can easily supply our domestic markets, and we export over 80% of the agricultural produce we produce, and compete with heavily subsidised products, hence all the fuss about the so called “Free Trade Agreement”. While we could import much of our food from other countries like Brazil, it would leave lave us exposed, and agricultural exports do generate a large income for Australia. CU.
