Hey HoPpers,

This is the scary first post - though not as scary as it may have been had I not wandered over to the Clapham meet lat Sunday. thanks for directing me, Pink - you're a gem. I would guess one of those pink diamonds, there aren't many other pink gems. I was most impressed with myself for getting the elusive thread the needle at last, though my hyperloops still come out as wrist tangles or a bruised chin.

I'm heading to Belfast for a few months soon. Does anyone know of any spinners over there? I can't find much info when I search.

I am glad this is an international game - I learnt in school that the world spins, and now I know it's true.

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm here now, and for at least my first half of my first day, the weather has been wonderful. I have a sneaking suspicion it won't stay this way...

I'm yet to look at a map and see how far away Dublin is, but I guess that's a possibility. I feel honour-bound (by the code of ethics of international tourists) to go there sometime anyway.

Ooh, they just keep coming!

I'm great today. Just came back from a play with a bunch of spinners in Manchester. Never met them before, but sure enough, they were friendly and welcoming, and there were some very talented individuals there.
It's the second time I've randomly joined a spinners group, and it has worked out fine both times. ubbrollsmile

Hmmm.

I have been known to do turtle research ,strangely enough, but Thai turtles, rather than Welsh!

I am Australian, from Perth. 30, single (but looking!!), no dependents, no debts, physiotherapist, firedancer.

I haven't lived in Perth for ten years, though. Since I got my physio degree I've taken short term contract jobs and travelled in between times. First four years were in Oz - Derby (WA), Ouyen (Vic), Alice Springs and Darwin (NT). Then in the UK - Southport, Wendover, Brighouse, Sandbach, Middlewich, Tarporley, Southend-on-Sea, Llangefni, Ledbury, Plymouth, Llanelli, Warrington, St Albans, Fleet, Sleaford and most recently Belfast.

Travelled between jobs in Australia, England, N Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Iceland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, Egypt, Thailand, Singapore, peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia... I think that's all. oh, and NZ and Japan when I was a teenager. Speak bits of all the relevent languages, some a lot better than others.

Also do a lot of voluntary work for an environmental conservation charity, so I can build footpaths and steps, close footpaths, clear scrub, waymark, chop down trees (the bad ones) and plant trees (the good ones), re-point stonework, build fences and kissing gates, research and care for injured sea turtles... Going to spend ten weeks in Iceland this summer doing footpath work in extra-remote wilderness areas!!

I love travelling obviously, but also playing guitar and writing songs, walking the UK footpaths including long distance paths, camping, learning languages, skiing and snowboarding, talking about life philosophy with people, cooking, especially desserts, reading, dancing - favourite is salsa, but also tango, jive, chacha - playing games - any kind of card game that involves skill rather than just luck, scrabble, 'gammon - and of course fire-dancing.

I started learning poi in January 2004, from my travel partner in SE Asia, had my first burn at sunrise on the rim of an active volcano in Java, and still love it. I have no idea how good I am. Better than some, worse than others. Currently playing with lots of throws, catch-release stuff. Played a little with staff, but... it'd be one more awkwardly-shaped thing to pack into my car when I'm between jobs. Having said that, I suspect I'll give in soon anyway. Loved living in Belfast where I got to play with the fabulous Irish contngent of spinners. (Damn it, i *really* miss them.) Love doing club gigs (thanks, Firepoise), but still haven't come to terms with spinning in a cold climate.

Took my name from a comment my friend/lover/poi teacher made in Thailand one day when I'd freshly painted my toenails dark green with gold glitter on the tips - 'ooh, dragon toes! You're a dragon Princess!'

Currently job-hunting (or, my agency is hunting on my behalf) for a senior 1 orthopeadic outpatient post anywhere in the UK. But only for 6 weeks because that's when the Iceland job starts. Bought my first pair of steel toe-capped boots this week, and started wearing them in yesterday, in preparation for Iceland!! What a strange thing to get excited about. I have a good friend, Jane, not a spinner, who lets me live in her house while I'm waiting for work. So I'm in Ormskirk right now, but hopefully I'll get a job and be somewhere else soon. I've been decorating her study in return for board, but i've done as much as I can now. I think she'll have me gardening next.

So that's a pretty good introduction to me, I think. It's hard not to be superficial with these things, but it's who I am and what I do with my life. It's a start.

smile

Yeah, The first burn was petty amazing. I didn't even turn, because the rim was only about a meter wide, and I was so mesmerised by the flames I was scared I'd fall into the smoking crater!

And I haven't seen nearly enough of the world yet. wink

Wow princess, I'm pretty envious (as would anyone be!). Your passport must be spilling with stamps! One thing though, how did caring for sea turtles work into that equation? I'd love to do that if I ever had the opportunity.

Well anyway. Good on you- hope you're loving every minute biggrin

The turtle project was one of the many 'holidays' offered by BTCV, the conservation charity I volunteer for. Same people who will hopefully be teaching me dry stone walling this week.

Unfortunately the turtle project was run on an island in Thailand, Kho Phra Thong, which was devastated by the tsunami earlier this year. Two volunteers were killed and the infrastructure was destroyed, so there are no projects there this year. Very sad and distressing. But the project was amazing, the location was idyllic, the turtles wonderful and the people lovely and incredibly dedicated.

I know there are other turtle conservation projects run in Greece, Turkey, Mexico,Costa Rica... check out Green Volunteers on line. But, Ry, it's usualy a pretty expensive holiday. You have to look at it as a financial donation, as well as a donation of time. I'd do it again, but Iceland is going to dominate my voluntary work this year.

As for the passport - hardly any stamps at all. I havedual nationality, so I don't get stamps from EU countrues in my UK passport. I wish I did, though it would look a lot more impressive!

I am glad this is an international game - I learnt in school that the world spins, and now I know it's true.
