I think this would qualify as a mad

As was stated before:

umm you guys are all rude and unobservant.

Why don't you read someones posts before assuming you know what they're saying.

monkey would like to write a reply to Napoim's excellent post, but he is now going home in a huff... hopefully some poi and music will improve his mood.

I appologise Napoim. I read over what you said previously and read it as another "what music do you spin to?" thread, which it now obviously isnt.

spank

Hell yes music is an element of spinning. changes in pitch, tempo and other musicy things (just so happen to be listening to "hall of the mountain king") reallly alter the way people spin.

Air poi is something everyone does...

I agree with you..poi has also changed my taste in music. I have now heard a lot more genres of music and found some great bands.

cool

be nice people... Napoim had some really valid points.

This thread is of some value and I will allow it to remain open so long as we don't start listing our preferred happy hardcore DJs or anything like that... A discussion on the elements of music and spinning probably has been done before on HOP, but not for a while, so we can all benefit from re-evaluating our standpoints on the subject.

well I was originally going to scream incoherently but after a good read of all of the starting post I have decided as long as this is a discussion of a valid part of our art then it's ok. But the minute people start listing what they like to spin to, listen to, have sex to, etc... -- Enter the incoherent screaming cool

In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird, now the world is weird and they take prozac to make it normal again.

I think that's an interesting point you make - is music essential to spinning

I would have once said yes
that was until I actually lit up and could no longer hear the music

I would then seek out situations to spin without music
and I found that I could tap into my own 'inner music' better
and I could still hear the noise of the fire

even when not lighting up - I seldom use music, unless rehearsing for something using music.

sometimes I crave it or miss it, sometimes I seek solitude for spinning

I cant believe I'm going to say this but....

I dont think the two are inseperable. I love to trance dance with my poi or doubles...in fact its my favourite way of getting down at a doof. But with fire I think variation of timing that isnt measured in quarters of 4/4 beats can be cool. Ie start slow and then build up to full powa...instead of just bouncing away to a single beat as happens so much with dj sets these days...

Sorry if my last comment came across negative, didn't mean to. I was just amused by the kill the music threads. As a musician I could never kill (at least music threads, drummers on the other hand are another story biggrin).

Anyway, in answer to the question at hand: I have found that each has influenced the other. I stumbled on poi shortly after I became obsessed with trance about six months ago. I would have to say now I cannot separate the two, or at least it is very hard. Of course as a music person, I think music has to do with everything. Everything in my life kinda revolves or comes around, or relates to music, which relates to color (by the way, did you ever smell the color 9?) etc. Anyway I think I am gonna get off topic if I continue, so I will stop now. Although I do agree with what Josh said about the whorking up to power thing, course I think it depends on my mood too. I am so very mood driven. . .
