Not getting total geek or geekish tendencies therefore geek looks about
middle to me. So going by societies standards I would assume that normal is
the centre mark of behaviour and in this instance would be geek.
I would agree that 'normal' has no strict boundaries but from a geek point of view im definately not it.
I hope this clarifys my feelings especially for you

i think the test is silly, it tries to group together science and roleplaying stuff into one word, which is stoopid. I have no problems scoring highly on a geek test when the word is associated with maths, science and computing, but i scored lower on this because i don't beleive in dragons, can't speak klingon and have never been to a star trek convention let alone been dumped at one. These people are nerds not geeks - I reckon it was written by a nerd who wants to be a geek. And anyway, what sort of test doesn't give a different weighting to questions? The extra javascript isn't that complicated, i guess it just again proves that the author is a nerd not a geek tongue

The way I've seen it, geek and dork have one notable difference, geeks are dorks but dorks in subjects that are highly employable.

So someone who knows exactly what difference every AD&D item makes to your character... dork.

Someone who knows every programming language on the face of the earth... geek.

I think of geeks being generally cool, intelligent, and talented people who are really into some technical or scientific field, be it applied or pure science. But geeks are genuinely passionate about what they do and are more interested in the pursuit of their work than they are in the pursuits of most of the masses (materialism, fashion, popular entertainment, etc.) That doesn't mean that geeks are exclusively interested in their work with no outside interests, but generally geeks choose outside interests that require some degree of intelligence, dedication, study, and skill to appreciate, rather than simple, casual pursuits, and they go after them with zeal. I'm a geek, I'm proud to be a geek. I generally hang out with geeks.

And arsn, I'm also a jock. Geekiness and jockiness aren't mutually exclusive. I was captain of the swim team in high schoool.

I think of nerds as being the kid who drove you nuts in high school, with the taped glasses, the pants hiked up to the armpits, a funny, musty smell, and the social skills of a gifted rock. They're often quite smart, but they are, by definition, socially inept (probably a "subclinical" form of Asperger's syndrome, now that I think about it). Although there is some overlap between geeks and nerds, nerds tend to be more single-mindedly focused on their work to the exclusion of outside pursuits and interests.

I think of a dork as just being unrelated to the two. Calling someone a dork is an insult. A dork is someone who is just plain strange, and not necessarily in a good way. Generally, it implies incompetence, too.

Of course, if you look up the three terms in Webster's, it tells you that they're all pretty much interchangeable.

I also note that the above post is incredibly geeky and that I am also a geek for being excited about making the 80th post in this thread.

So neener. <--(that was dorky of me, BTW) wink

LMAO....i think that, by far, was the best delineation of geeks, nerds, and dorks.

and i am a geek

although i have to say i call people dorks quite lovingly, it's a comical term, not hostile or mean at all. but that's just me.

biggrin

you deserved it for calling me that you uberdork.

actually i would have put your definitions pretty much the other way round for geeks and nerds. not exactly. but to me geeks are the socially inept and will discuss thier chosen subject to the death with anyone, and nerds are the ones who are interesting about their subject., but will still discuss it until its dead if(and only if) the right people come along to discuss it with

maybe thats just another example of the UK/US language barrier again.

or it could just be that i'm wrong.

There is nothing wrong with your definitions of geek and nerd, much, altho they may or may not be shared be everyone.

But your definition of dork only goes to prove you arn;t one, or something how can you even say taht knowing me?

*shakes head*

choices
(1)Lightning thinks I am incompetent and whatever else and has never bothered to tell me, which would explain why he is coming to visit me and everything? confused confused

(2) Lightning is confused.

(3) Lightning is masochistic.

Well, regardless of whatever is true, DORK IS A COMPLIMENT. Lets start there. I have a lot of trouble defining it in any language (especially japanese!) but it generally implies cuteness, strangeness, and that you either are /or are doing something which is/ a little strange or weird, but in a cool kind of fun way, or at the very least in a harmless endearing way (depends on what it is).

:P to u lightning.
