I'm going to be flying and plan to do a fire show at my destination. I know I can't fly my fuels but do airports freak out about torches and poi in your bags? I travel lite and only have on bag so I really don't want to check it.

How is it ever possible to feel safe and secure in a world in which everyone dies?

I've taken my staffs and chains (poi) all over with me...Canada, Japan, Fiji, USA. I kept them in my ski bag and was not questioned on them once.I doubt you'll have a problem, just be careful (for your sake) in packing them - don't leave them attached to the outside of a backpack etc - they'll certainly be bent and runied.Happy Travels!flash

Hey Crispx, I'm travelling right now to, I wish I would have done the ski bag thing but I already have a super nice staff/equip. bag. I called it 'Dancing Equipment' on one flight, that was fine, they asked what kind of equip. I said sticks and stuff... Next flight, I accidentally called it "fire Dancing equipment"...whoa!! wrong thing to say!! I had about 10 questions fired at me in one minute!! They still let me take it but they were pretty snotty about it! I've been getting it put on special baggage, one airport put nice 'fragile' tape on it for me. I still have 4 more flights to go of all this fuss, good luck to you!! Fairie firebell

Is there anyway to travel with fuels? I'm going to be traveling this summer, and don't really want to buy fuel down there. -PSM[This message has been edited by psychomonkey (edited 31 January 2001).]

Hey NYC, I have revived this one, that do ya? winkI am kinda wondering, because I want to take my staff on a flight down to Melbourne in a couple of months. I don't really want to put it in the hold, because I don't have anything secure and padded I can put the rather lonf staff in. What do you think my chances are of carrying it on board, hand luggage wise? & What do you think I should tell them? R.

Thanks muchly... smileI think it's really touchy because if you're upfront and honest and volunteer the information, they may give you trouble because they have to... If not, they may give you trouble because you tried to hide it...What I would do is call the airline and ask anonomously. If you get a positive response, pursue it.. if not... well then it's up to you.I'd tell them that they are outdoor torches (rather than flaming staves of death) or something when you're describing them on the phone. Perhaps there is a special place you can check them (like where they drop off ski equiptment...)As for fuels, I really think it's a bad idea. Heck, I don't think that I'D feel comfortable having you fly on a plane with me if you had a fuel container. I know that stuff like shampoo leaks out of the bottle because of the difference in pressure in the plane. It would suck if a fuel container poped while in flight. I also KNOW it's really illegal and stated in many places throughout the airport and airplane.

Well, shall we go?

most airports especially after sept11`th went mad on security - it`s lessening now - especially if you travel regularly thru` the same airport - as the staff get to know you ( big smile thru` check-in time smile )best for fire-kit to be inside the luggage going into the hold - as it`s in their list as weapons - fuels are always a no-no -- for everyones sakeheres my open hand - of help------------------swoopedinandswoopedoutagain...orange...xxx...

A good staff carrier can be made out of 3" diameter PVC pipe--you can get a cap that glues onto one end, and a fitting for the other that allows you to screw a cap on. About US$20-30 for the whole thing, I'd imagine. If you want something ready-made, I've seen cases for fishing rods that telescope to a pretty good length and are rigid plastic.

i flew home from Thailand a few weeks ago, and had my staff strapped to the outside of my bag. They seemed pretty reluctant to take my bag like that, but they did in the end. It came out the other side in great condition still... but my sunnies in my bag pocket were mashed. :\

Yer, this thread has been done before - like I said then, if your stuff smells of fuel they wont allow it on. If you can, put new wick on it or they may confiscate the wick. Adamrice's ideas sounds good - you need something to make sure the smell is locked in. Whatabout plastic water bottles cut down and secured with gaffa tape, with loads of plastic bags underneath to seal and on top to disguise. Not quite as sophisticated but it worked with my poi!

I had thought of something like adam's PVC idea for poi but I thought "what must that look like through x-ray?"... I think it's important not to make it look TOO much like you've INTENDED to smuggle something. smile

Well, shall we go?

hey my dads an air traffic controller and his 2 best friends are pilots and my dads a part time pilot so this is always good to know for rules. anyway the pvc pipe thing is a great idea but dont try to bring that as a carry on. also to get the smell of just take some towel drench it in water and spray calone on, it seems stupid but it works. also with chains dont bring those as a carry on at all if u can help it because they are considered a weapon and while the idea of the steel box is good there going to make u open it and there going to bust u for thinking its a concealed weapon. my friend is in tea kwon do and she flys alot with weapons and she uses a fishing rod case for her bow (fishing rod cases lock out alot of the smell because rods smell like crap) and for the nunchku she just uses see through plastic bag but all her stuff is cheaked and isnt a carry on. if u want to try to take on your poi try to take off your wicks and put them in a plastic bag and seperate your chains from your handels because this makes them feel alot safer and they figure if you would try to use it as a weapon then someone would notice u trying to put it together even though it doesnt take that much. well any way thats about all i can say. bye

I#m off to Nepal on Saturday and I am wondering about de-smelling wicks - I've heard people talk about washing them: how is this done and does it result in any problems using the wicks after the transport phase?

My staff is brand new and unburnt, so that doesn't present much of a problem in checked baggage but my cathedrals are a shrine to paraffin - what're your recommendations?
