I find these kind of articles slightly disturbing, not for what they report, but for how they will be interpreted. The tendency on reading these reports is, instead of advocating more support for boys education, to advocate less support for women. The other response is the thought that there is no longer any prejudice against women.
So, my points:
Support for one gender should not be at the expense of the otherthere is still prejudice in the workplace against womenthere is still prejudice in the workplace against men (family leave entitlements, working requirements etc)
Maybe we just need to move beyond a "one gender is this, therefore the other is this" form of reasoning.
I find these kind of articles slightly disturbing, not for what they report, but for how they will be interpreted. While it sure does look like women are getting equality with men it is an illusion. the men begin smarter are letting the women slowly take over all the working roles so that we will sit back and enjoy the last 4000 years of hard work. of course women aren't completely stupid so the process is slow. it would seem some of the men aren't that quick either and continue to work like dogs. there are three types of people women and smart and stupid men. which one are you?

In my school most of the women teachers gave girls better grades just because they were women, and most of the male teachers gave girls better grades just because they flirted with them. So im pretty bitter about the whole thing. I do realize it's not like this everywheres, my school is infamous for being ****ed up and backwards.

For years I vaguely wanted to be a man 'cause I perceived that their lives are much easier. Now I realise it's bollox, there are goods and bads about being both sexes and I really like being a girl. I get to play with make-up without anyone thinking I'm weird.

Do I think things have changed dramatically? Well the answer to that would have to be a resounding no! When I moved to London I found it hard to find a job over here and many of the agencies kept trying to push me towards PA jobs. After years at University and almost 2 and a half years of working in Japan, frankly I found this insulting. Guys coming back from Japan after English teaching over there found jobs quicker than I did and started on better salaries. In my current line of work I have only met 2 women who were not secretarys. On a recent business trip to Japan I left after dinner while the guys went on to a hostess bar (I was not invited). At the same time, it is massive progress for my company (a very old, very proud Japanese company) that they give me more responsibility than booking hotels and making coffee!
Do I think things are equal - hell no! Like racism, sexism and inequality are very much alive. Its not just women who are discimiated against though. People think house husbands or guys who want to work with kids have something wrong with them, if they cut hair or work as trolly-kens are gay and if they cook they cannot be called a cook but a chef!
Just because sexism / racism is not in our face every day people assume it does not exist. It does, people just hide it better for fear of being sued.

I celebrate that women are making more achievements, and hope that they take this opportunity to level the playing field and really make the world a more fair and productive place.
What I've noticed is that girls' scores tend to rely heavily on their amount of confidence about a subject. In my experience, when a girl feels like she doesn't know the material, regardless of how much she's studied it, she continually second-guesses herself in moments of pressure (i.e. exams) and that, rather than lack of knowledge, causes her to lose points. Girls have always been as capable of success as boys, but it's convincing them of that fact that makes things difficult, I think. Makes tutoring one hell of a challenge, believe me!
Perhaps the success is partly the result of more tolerance in society for girls to pursue their own ambitions and not just make babies like their mother before them, too. Education always seems to overcome backward value systems, and as it is made more readily available it's soon apparent that the women of an area are just as able to run things as the men who previously held them back.
I also hope the women who are fortunate enough to experience this success and achievement are also ethical enough not to use it as an excuse to dominate or exact revenge on the men they may find working below them...

The biggest reason to blame for boys falling behind in schools is the overprescription of drugs for ADD such as Ritalin. Little boys are consistently told that their natural behavior is unacceptable, and when the authority figure (parent, teacher, whichever) has enough they slap a mental deficiency on the kid and call it a day. One article I read stated "research suggests that Ritalin has serious long term consequences for children, including stunting their physical and mental growth."

Another element that goes with the decline of male academic performance is the way schools are now being structured. The report cited after this paragraph mentions, "Our schools are made for children who can sit still with their hands folded, who aren't distracted by a bug on the wall, who keep quiet and do what you tell them to do even if it is boring. Most girls do fine in this environment, but many boys don't."

Females are getting better grades. And with those better grades, they are getting worse jobs, making less money, being abused and beaten more by strangers and spouses, being ignored by politicians, being ignored by the medical industry, being overlooked for promotion, being harassed at the workplace, being harassed while walking down the street for god's sake...
Yeah, they're doin' great. But at the end of the day, after being overworked, underpaid, overlooked, defeated, marginalized, raped and beaten... they can hold up their 7th grade reportcard and say "But look I got an A!"
There's a bigger picture guys.

I think in any system which denies women rights or abuses them, it's worth asking whether the men in that system are also being abused, in different ways.
e.g. an obvious example is around the time women were denied the right to vote and men generally considered to be in the superior postion, was in fact a time when young males were routinely shipped off to face the horrors of trench warfare.
This in no way justifies what has happened to women in the past, but I think it's worth seeing the bigger picture, which is not a society that abused women, but one that abused human beings regardless of gender.

I really think we needs more chris rocks in the world. I think the whole racism thing started to change fast when people followed that guys career. He started off being a huge biggot, but he was makeing a point that theres no power in words if you don't let there be. That guy made it black&white simple that it's not a black&white issue. I don't follow comedians a lot because I get their points pretty quickly, but I don't see anyone who's really spending effort pokeing holes at the feminism&sexism debate without polarizing it more then it is.

In Marriage Part I, why would she marry a guy that's that big of an ass? Annulment would be the option to go for at that time if he suddenly just manifested that attitude on the wedding day.
Marriage Part II - this one dealt more with age-related insults to virility... nothing wrong with a little bickering.
Marriage III - A woman is justified in adultery if the man criticizes her bedroom performance? And you consider this funny?
Marriage IV - humorous joke, and a good way to humiliate the guy in front of his buddies, but really all it does is make the wife look like a licentious adulteress when you think about it a second.
Please don't portray men as idiots or sex-crazed savages... a vocal minority in our gender might be worthy of that sort of stereotyping but I am certainly not like that and I am disgusted when people assume I might be before they get to know me.

I react the same way when I see a joke about abusing women, or demeaning them sexually... there's limits, ya know? I remarked that the joke about the old couple was funny... it wasn't in bad taste. The thing that really irked me was Kat's "He really had that coming!" line in Marriage III... that was the only one that really got me going, the rest weren't too bad.
That last article didn't seem to me like a hurt and bitter man, so much as a guy who's seeing both sides of an issue tearing themselves and each other down in the process. I think the fact that he chose to severely overanalyze a couple of personal ads might have served to weaken his argument and portray him as a total knob to women, but he's taking a big picture and applying it to a couple of small examples, which almost never works (it's called "stereotyping" ). The overall article was quite insightful though, in my opinion - it shows how both sides of the gender conflict are really serving to widen the divisions between us.
And I thought this thread was about the "War of the Sexes?" Joke all ya want, but there are definitely some issues that need to be resolved between the two halves of humanity, and I'd just like to try and promote an understanding of that situation for everyone here.

Deep breaths babes! As a woman who has been supporting her man for the past two years I most certainly do not view my partner as a lesser person for it. You know nothing about our situation and how his race and gender in this country have meant that we have struggled emotionally and financially over the past two years.
Being humourless does not mean that you take the need for gender inequality more seriously than the rest of us.
Edit: after initial flaming annoyance I see what you mean about the 'he had it coming', but it is a joke, not a recommendation that someone commit infidelity, personally I read that as 'he deserved to have that joke played on him for being nasty!' I would find it equally as amusing if it was role reversed!
