Recently I started an indefinite trip around Asia. I eventually stayed at the Circus Hostel in Pai, and automatically fell in love with fire performance.
My spinning skills are vet basic but they said I have a unique style as far as footwork and movement. I have a high interest in martial arts like wu shu and trained with a staff/nunchucks in karate when I was a lad, so it translates to my style.
After an afternoon of messing around, one of the performers asked me if I'd like to perform.. I've never even considered spinning fire at this point. My first time holding fire was exhilarating.
The gent that pushed me to do so spins the dragon staff, which he let me try.. after an hour or so I was able to get the Chi roll down.. I like the way the contact feels.
They didn't have many toys to practice with that aren't devil sticks or sock poi, so I never got to experience much else besides fans and a staff. I never really had an interest in poi.
I'd love to eventually learn sword(s), perhaps contact swords. My question is, do all moves translate from non-contact to contact? Can you spin as fast?
