or you can get to it directly thru IRC. Which actually opens up all of the functionality of IRC. The web-based app leaves a bit to be desired in comparison.

yea, the webbased one is designed really for newbies, if you use it more than a couple of times then get an irc client. The web interface is a bit slow, but thats because it's pure HTML - no java, so it works through company firewalls where irc would not. It also doesn't require the person's browser to download anything additional, it just works when you click the link.

Hmm. I'm almost positive I had to download a Java client to use the chat. Maybe I'm just confusing this chat with a different site..

Depends on the company, and how they have the firewall set up. But then, if you have control over your companies firewall...

Well, its pure serverside, just html output. It updates via meta refresh, but with an extra random number on the end so you don't get a cached version. Therefore, any firewall/proxy configuration which allows webpages will allow it, unless they filter pages with keywords on like chat. Java clients on the other hand run clientside and make a connection to the irc server, which isn't allowed on firewalls which block irc connections
