it seems that all of the firetwirlers i have met that dont twirl with the group i twirl with dont know how to burn off a stick. is this a common thing or are twirlers in adelaide just a little backwards? (this includes twirlers that have been twirling for 5 + years)

nice, do u spin up when u burn off or do u do a stationary spin? have u tried doing a vertical burnoff rather than a horizontal one?

spin up and towards..

you cant do vertical burn offs.....think about the physics of what you are suggeesting...

think about why horizontal burnoffs work..and what would happen if you even attempted to try a vertical one!!!

its just like playing with a candle, all be it a big candle, the fire is only there for a very brief period of time so if you do make contact with the flame its really short. besides with the beach right there if u do get burnt a quick swim and its all better. its really not as dangerous as it looks firebreathing and the like is far more dangerous

Persoanlly, the danger of a vertical burnoff is quite high as the explosions are much closer to you and your arm than they need to be.

And I think a horizontal one looks much more impressive, as well as being safer, but that's just me

Oh yeah, heres a nice shot of a horizontal burnoff Angelwings

Another cool thing is that my double wicked staffs (two lots of 2 foot wick on each end) somehow split up the burnoffs per wick.

This means, instead of getting two explopsions, I get four! (despite the fact that the wicks are flush with each other)

Looks really cool, but uses up TONS of fuel...

hehe I got Valura in the back....

I do horizontal burn offs. Either right infront or me (thats one got some ooooos and ahhhhsss on Canada Day) so the flame looks like it's coming from my hands or fliking it about 15 feet in the air so it lights up the entire area. I get about a 4 foot ball of flame off 2 inch wicks.

i find the vertical burnoff more impressive just because you vanish into the fire.

dimples how do you know they were oooing and ahing at your vertical burn off and not just a burnoff in general? I think horizontal is better because the fireballs go so much higher. Plus you don't burn your arms off if something goes arong.

A good, soggy poi burn-off is, IMHO the most spectacular sight in spinning. But you need to be wearing stuff that absolutely will not burn and you need to be in the middle of a playa or a large parking lot and you need a LOT of space between you and the audience.

Hi y'all...
burnoffs rock... vertical ones are fun asyou get a nice fire-ring (like a smoke ring)...but yes they do have the added burn-your-arms factor...you can do it with only one wick lit don't forget!

Some cool burn-offs for poi (just so you poi-ers don't feel left out or un-cool ):

1. Place your poi on the ground at arms length apart and turn your body (and thusly the poi) in a circle... if you're on reasonably dry grass or if you are using BBQ fluid you get a lovely circle of fire around you to start your burn in...

2. Holding the poi by your side, flick/whip your poi in front of you for wee fire balls...not so impressive generally.

3. Spin your poi by your side and lift your feet into the circle... if you get the angle just right the poi will run/roll along the sole of your shoe/foot and you can get some REALLY nice flames coming out...only works a few time though...(thanks to DevKev for that little gem!)

so there you ahve it... play on play on...

dave

ps for those who don't know what the hell we're all banging on about:
a burnoff (or spin off or fire ball) is wjen you light up without spinning off the excess fuel. after you've lit you toss the staff with as much spin as you can so that the excess fuel sprays off the wick...ignites and you get luuurvely pillars of fire. Be carefuk of wind direction and peeps playing near you...and overhanging trees!

I didn't say anything about a vertical burn off that was a horizontal burn off at chest level. And I knew they were oooing and ahhing at that because by that point they'd stoped oooing and ahhing at us when we burnt off.

with double 4" poi (or should i call them split 8"?) the weight is distributed in such a way that spinning them in a lasso-like manner causes a poi burnoff, but not nearly to the intensity as luverly staves!
