So I was just thinking about how long it took me to figure out that spinning glowsticks on a string was an actual art... lol Ever since I was young, I frequently enjoyed the pleasures of spinning (what I later found to be called) Poi, but I didn't have a guide or anyone to teach me things. It was all purely my own, when it came to technique and "moves". Through time, I figured out more and more ways to do different things... and all around, when I finally realized I wasn't the only one doing what I did, I realized that it took me quite a while to nail all of what you would consider "the basics" of spinning...
So enough rambling... I realize it took me a while, but I'm wondering how long it took everyone else--everyone who may have known that Poi existed... O,o
My question is: how long did it take you to learn (and I mean TRULY learn [and have the ability to near perfectly perform]) "the basics"?

I would say a month? but then there are some things that I consider basic that I still have a hard time doing. For eg. I refuse to do BtB butterflies because of the amount of times I hit myself in the sack bringing it to the front again. easy hyperloops irritate the crap out of me but I can do wall plane hyperloops and stuff.

I agree with Woodland. I consider being able to turn, being able to spin in any combination of split/same time and butterfly/same direction in any plane you choose as the basics. From there, most things fall into place.

Idk about a month? I'd consider it to be able to spin all directions/times in front of you and above you. Along with weaves, which would bring in turns, reels, fountain, all that fun stuff I still have fun with. Of course I also started practicing what would be flowers within my first week
I just loved the concept of concentric circles and I still do. I use them a lot which in the winter = cieling being hit too much. Also led me into CAPS, extentions, and whirling. And I learned triquetras within my first month, as I said I loved the concept of all the flowers, extensions though took me quite a while to get good oddly. Also the, idk what to call it, maybe extension meltdown??? not quite sure. Extensions while turning your body back and forth facing forward. That took me a really long time to get into a smooth motion. I'd sat learn flowers if you have'nt, idk what you have and haven't tried since you've been on your own there. Also that extension meltdown but with inspin flower, I liked that, which eventually helped me learn to turn with it. But what's the hardest/most advanced thing you know from doing it all on your own with no influence? I'm kind of curious to know what kind of stuff you came up with.

I personally think that even a begining spinner could put on a really good show if they can dance well while they do it, which I think is the hardest thing.
I am currently relearning a lot of things backwards because I saw they weren't smooth/natural/or just couldn't do it. For some reason, reverse beatswitch is really hard for me to get right. Which is really odd because I could do it forwards on my first try when I saw a little clip of doing it and bringing your hands up to windmill position and back to separated.
I'm just doing this backwards though and it seems to be working in me getting it better.
You have to get a video of your uninfluenced spinning, I am very very curious on what someone who was completely uninfluenced by anyone else for years spinning looks like.

I've been working on this on and off for three months and I can spin forwards, backwards, opposing directions, butterfly (and get in and out of butterfly) and corkscrew. Um. Yeah that's pretty much it. Currently working stubbornly on getting three beat weave.

I found that learning things for me was just merely a mindset. When the weather get's warmer I'll definitely spin with you and show you some things. I've been spinning for 4 months and have gotten pretty ridiculous for this amount of time.
