Well, your Dutch may be better than mine, but I can understand it at least. Afrikaans is good for something after all. grin

Welkom by Home of Poi. Ek hoop jy geniet dit hier.

Any particular fantasy authors you recommend?

Ja, Suid Afrikaans is baie goed!

I can understand that also, had a friend once whos Afrikaans was better understandeble than his Dutch so he spoke that all te time.
I'm learning Spanisch now and (like most Dutch) can read and Understand German. Sinds my journey trough Norway: Jei snakker lit Norsk, but don't understand that so well...
Afrikaans in writing i have never expirenced. maybe i can read a post of you in Arikaans?

Ah Fantasy well, i'm reading "the elfs" now, (Bernard Hennen if i'm right) quite nice.
Do you like fantasy too?

As ek Afrikaans moet skryf is dit nie so goed nie.

Yes, that i can read and understand completely!

It's not the same as Dutch, because our language is very complicated. most Dutch can't even spell right. Our D's and t's and verbs change in every possible way. I know some of my foreign friens really hate learning Dutch. It looks (in writing than) like the rules come and go in random order.

Your afrikaans is like my friend speaks. it makes me smile. (Ek lees jou Afrikaans baie! )
Unfortunatly the two languages are so simular because of the slavery. Holland played not a nice part in that period of time.

I will try to reply to you in Dutch also:

Dank je wel voor je post in het Afrikaans. Heel leuk. ik vind het erg goed geschreven. Grote glimlach!

Tara.

((An American friend said to me: Dutch sounds like: schgg schgg schgg, i think he's probalbly right haha, Afrikaans is a bit softer i suppose)

SF i like mostly in Movies. In Holland there was once a tv serie called V. Great show. But nowadays i am more into fantasy. I like Elfs and gnooms and all sorts of funny creatures. Sf is also nice. I will see if i can find a book from the writer you told me. And see what will happen.

I realy liked this books:

Well, Afrikaans is a mix of many languages, mostly Dutch, but also French, German, Khoi-san, Xhosa, English etc.

From what I know of the history of the language, it basically evolved as a "kitchen language" used by servants and so on. This makes it much simpler than Dutch to actually learn and understand due to simpler grammar rules and such.

Hey Jaykitty, thank you for your warm welcome.

As an art therapist and hobby-philosopher that caught my attention.
I realy am curious. (answer only if you want ofcourse)

It's a unit that admits people for all kinds of behavioral problems. The most common are drug related problems (detox and psycosis) depression, suicide ideas or attempts, and schizophrenia disorders. Every now and then an Alzheimers patient comes in because they were violent at their nursing home, its not really a controlable disorder so that makes things messy, but that's it in a nutshell. Its really interesting how the mind works sometimes.

It is well enough established that it is no longer a pidgin though.

I think it might be a creole....

I'm so impressed with everyone with their multiple languages. I just speak English. I've been thinking about learning a second language but I haven't figured out which one. It would be something that I could use, which is the problem because everyone that I'm around speak english. *sigh*

What do yoou think is the reason people get addicted. And why is it so easy for some to stop and others must fight the addiction their whole life.

The language is called Afrikaans, not Suoth African. wink We have eleven official languages, so that becomes rather a moot point anyway....

I plan on learning either French or Portuguese when I get the chance....

Hé Tara,

Good to see some more Dutchblood around.

Unfortunatly I see the discussiong about our Native language is allready booming. It's not as if English is such a beautifull language, personally I prefer Spanish as the new world-language.

But oh well.

I think the most fun fact about the dutch is that to communicate with the world we need to learn all these languages, we all speak dutch, most understand German, we all learn at least enough french to order some coffee. I think that's what I love about holland, we can understand many languages and most don't understand us, except for them South-africans, we have to be aware of them eavesdropping ;-)

Raoul
