So.. I've seen

Spirited Away (2001)

Non-Https Image Link

Princess Mononoke (1997)

Non-Https Image Link

Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

Non-Https Image Link

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Non-Https Image Link

and just lately, My Neighbor Totoro (1988)..

They've all been brilliant for me apart from My Neighbor Totoro- nothing seemed to happen . And it's not even because it's a 1988 film.. Nausicaä was 1984 and I still got my Miyazaki fix..

Will probably watch Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) next,

then Porco Rosso (1992) and am not sure what's left to catch after..

I grew up on Totoro mannnnnnnnnn... biggrin

Kiki's delivery service is pretty cute.

And you're missing Grave of the Fireflies; one of the better movies I've seen, animated or not. But prepare for some serious BAWWWWWWWWWWWWing if you watch it. I saw it when I was a kid and I think I was emotionally scarred for life...and still am, but in a good way.

Personally Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies are my personal favorites.

Seen the first three, but I never go out to see them - they're always on at my friends place. Didn't think too much of Grave of the Fireflies though, I'm not sure why.

Slightly off topic, but I'm really wanting to see more Asian movies, like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, House of Flying Daggers, and so on.

Of Miyazaki..I really enjoyed Howls and Mononoke.. both very well crafted. The Others I've seen were all enjoyable but those are the two that stood out to me.

Of general Asian movies..

Seven Swords is a personal favourite for martial arts. And of course there's Old Boy for a twisted modern lilt on things... or Lady Vengeance etc. And for a top combination of Samurai Zombie..ing, theres always good ol Versus. Celebrity Love Island with a twist...Battle Royale('s)

They're all pretty obvious choices, but awesome nonetheless biggrin

Tartan Asia's stuff tends to be pretty epic and gritty as a rule.

Oh yeah, I messed up... But watch it anyhow Ry! I saw it again recently at a showing at my uni and a good section of the audience were in tears.

Also, in terms of other movies from Asia... I love Hero (for artsy), kung-fu hustle (for funny), shaolin soccer (for geeky), My Sassy Girl (cute date movie), and ong bak (for badassery)

Slight Spoilers (but not really if you see the beginning of the film):

The film was directed by Isao Takahata, who is associated with the famous Ghibli Studio, source of the greatest Japanese animation. His colleague there is Hayao Miyazaki ("Princess Mononoke," "Kiki's Delivery Service," "My Neighbor Totoro"). His films are not usually this serious, but "Grave of the Fireflies" is in a category by itself. It's based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Nosaka Akiyuki--who was a boy at the time of the firebombs, whose sister did die of hunger and whose life has been shadowed by guilt.

Last semester I watched Howl's on repeat while I did my Japanese study, but aside from that I've only seen Princess Mononoke which I find interesting given the strong theme is has of the environment.

I'm not really one for anime, but I realise that I really should watch more given the level I do Japanese (and don't understand the anime references in class!) Actually, I think we translated the start of Spirited Away in class...that girl looks familiar...

If you do get it and plan to watch it, have a funny or happy movie to follow up after. Grave of the Fireflies is a very moving and emotional production.

the top 4 are the first ones I saw (not quite in that order though)

saw Nausicaa lately on DVD, and Karen and I were having a debate over whether or not she was wearing leggings with that incredibly short skirt. (I was for leggings, Karen was against btw)

Tales from Earthsea is Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro's directorial debut...

It's also (whispers) very disappointing... Not bad, but not in the same league as his dad's films.

Oh, it's a beautiful moving, but horrifically depressing! It was actually the first Ghibli film I ever had the pleasure of seeing (although, Princess Mononoke was great, seeing it at the Rutgers Film Coop in a big lecture hall with tons of otaku, and I still think Spirited Away is the best).

Ry, might I recommend judiciously picking the right time to watch Grave fo the Fireflies? It's really good, but really sad. Excellent movie. But really, really, sad. frown

You can find most of these at Barne's and Noble Booksellers, or really any other bookstore where they sell movies. Or, you should be able to! If not, Amazon or what-not.
