Well I'm a happy boy. I'm happy because after 6 years of watching our country and world get completely trashed, people in the U.S. finally realized that it wasn't making them any safer, richer, or better.

More importantly, I was beginning to seriously wonder if the United States was still a constitutional republic of democratic states or whether the Republicans had committed so much voter fraud that they had silenced the People and made this into a dictatorship.

Last night's election proved to me that we still do have a voice and it renewed just a teensy amount of faith in my own country. And you have no idea how immensely happy that makes me. biggrin

The GOP is at it again. Bush is pushing them to get through a bill that would allow him to wiretap international communications without a warrant before the Democrats take over the Congress in January.

Hopefully someone will block it.

I'm always amused by the names of the parties.

Democrat
Republican

Aren't they the same thing? You can't have an Autocratic Republic, and you can't have a Republic without Democracy...

Or can you?

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

They're two extremes of a continum. You can give the elected politicians huge amounts of power or you can give them little power at all and require that the populace vote on everything.

An example would be a tax budget. You could have one extreme where the elected official would just set taxes and another extreme where there would have to be a majority vote to implement new taxes. Some districts where I work allow for citizens to vote for tax increases for schools and such.

But the origin of the words "Democrat" and "Republican" have an interesting history. They even flipped from what they originally meant. Look it up if you're interested.

Bingo.

Everybody looky here.

Iraq war kills hundreds of thousands, gay marriage ban, abortion ban, loss of civil liberties, government wire tapping, patriot act, deficit spending, taxing the poor, destryoing the environment... all goes out the window when somebody thinks the dems might hurt the economy.

I'll step over dead people if it means I can have another dollar in my pocket.

Welcome to America.

The economy is indeed doing better.

FOR THE RICH.

For the rest of us, in some areas things are getting worse than the Depression.

Sure, money is moving around more again, and they use the numbers to fool us-- hardly anyone is actually seeing the benefit. When the Republicans say "oh no, the Democrats are going to raise your taxes!!" they're talking to the rich, who've been getting tax -breaks- for years.

"Ours is not to question The Head; it is enough to revel in the ubiquitous inanity of The Head, the unwanted proximity of The Head, the unrelenting HellPresence of The Head, indeed the very UNYIELDING IRRELEVANCE of The Head!" --Revelation X

Now, I don't know who you are or who this Patriarch character is, 'cause I'm fairly new here; but if you're that worried about being attacked and having no defence it might be an idea to reconsider your position. Arguments (in theory) only have one conclusion, and it usually involves both parties being partially wrong. If your mission is to convince others and not listen to what they have to say, you should stop banging your head against that brick wall.

(This isn't a personal attack, it's much more general, but your post sparked the thought in my head.)

it's just that it seems because i have a different view (somewhat vastly) i must be wrong.
Galileo was in the minority.
I do listen, i actually went to school for mediation, but it feels as though i am not listened to and i must listen to everyone
because people do not agree with me is not the same as me not have a defense-it's just not one that they like

and by the way, those rich people tax breaks-i have felt big time. i get more money back now after my refund...we also have rent relief which is very nice. i am by no means rich and have been bouncing around with places to live and jobs and etc

(i understand it was not a personal attack and thank you, i appreciate you saying so-no sarcasm-for real)

ubblol mike you drama queen!

the revolution of 1688 pretty much saw the beginning of parliamentary democracy!

you've still got the same government (okay, not exactly the same but it hasn't been replaced) and the same crap system of voting that you had before - it was a long way from a revolution, in any sense of the word.

but really, midterms get far lower voter turnout than congressional elections do and everyone knows it - the real test will come in two years time...

Indeed. I can't see very much change coming from this.

Except, of course, setting up Giuliani for President. (Or Mc. Cain)

You really think this country is ready for a black or female president?

The black president got killed on 24 and the female president got cancelled mid season.

But Giuliani... he saved New York.
