Battle Royale RULES. I saw the "requiem" version recently, that's quite cool. Fantastic movie. I LOVE the flashback scene with the guy in the gym, and the ball bounces past him getting higher and higher till a guy in the stands catches it, that was really trippy!

And Jaws, all time classic. Hands down. Derrr-Der. Derrrrrr-Der. Der-Der, Der-Der, Der-der, etc.

Hellraiser 5: Inferno. No, seriously.... I mean it. Why are you laughing? Really, it was good! Honestly.

Actually, I really enjoyed it, it was the best Hellraiser move since the first two. Obviously it's not the best film ever, but I was genuinely surprised at how well it was put together. The concept was was more in line with the first film, where Pinhead is an incidental character. Instead, the story focuses on the lead character, a corrupt cop, and his descent into his own personalised hell, overseen (briefly) by the ubiquitous Pinhead. Very stylised, and I really loved the ending.

Everyone I've shown it too says "You're actually going to make me watch this pile of dung?!", and comes out of it going "That was much better than I thought it would be".

Which either means I have no taste, and neither do my friends, or it's not that bad... I'd love to hear some opinions on this one (if anyone other than me and my mates have ever watched it of course)

Oh Bladerunner I loved that, I used to have the pc game wich was very coool, but hard!



Logans Run is another good one, such a scary concept, mandaytory death once your life clock turns red.

I haven't seen the sequel, but to me the first one made perfect sense so I don't quite get your comment. It was a pretty straightforward story, really. I thought it was a brilliant satire on nationalism and "the war machine" plus the bugs were cool.

Loved Starship troopers as well, in some ways it reminded me of Robocop, the satire was fairly similar...

As for '12 monkeys', I actually was lucky to see the original inspiration in french... La Jetee

I'd only recommend seeing La Jetee if you're a 12 monkeys freak. It's really more of a subtitled slide show. I actually think 'the ending twist' is better in the original french. But it does kinda suck as a slide show.

As you can see, i like Quentin Tarantino a lot, he`s a genius!

"The terminal" is an awesome movie and what makes it even better is Tom Hanks, a brilliant actor.

"The man on the moon" has to rank in the top 3. As much as I hate to rank it above some Tarantino movies, i have to.
I like all the movies Jim Carrey acts in but this is definately the best.

I was amazed after seeing "The butterfly effect", just one of those movies you have to watch again and again etc..

And finally as a Texas hold `em fan I think "Rounders" is the best "poker" movie ever.

If we can`t live in peace then fu*k it, let`s die.

Joseph Gordon Levitt is Burning Dan's little brother?!!!!!

It's a small world! If so I can sorta see the similarity!

'Brick' was excellent, it's main distinction - the Chandler-esque (as in Raymond Chandler, not Chandler Bing from 'Friends') dialogue - was quite alienating and impenetrable to begin with but the labyrinthine plot really drew you in to the bitter end. And having an underworld Kingpin whose base of operations was us his mum's basement is genius!!!

The Crow (the sequels aren't bad, but not great either, and Brandon Lee is my hero)
Donnie Darko (gotta love it. and it's all theoretically correct :o)
The Last Castle (Robert Redford was outstanding in this)
Enemy at the Gates (Jude Law plays an excellent Vassili Zaitsev)
Akira (best anime ever)
Hero (one of the most moving pieces of cinema I have ever seen)
New Dragon Gate Inn (akin to Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, and starring the stunning Maggie Cheung, this movie is often overlooked)
The Quest (I love this movie for the martial arts more than the storyline. so many fighting styles. Muay Thai, Capoeira, Southern Shaolin Kung-Fu, Sumo, and generally beating each other up )
Initial D (doesn't quite live up to the Anime, but a good movie nonetheless)
The Time Machine (could've paralelled the HG Wells book a little better, but overall an excellent movie.)

a few comments

Ichi the killer is certainly an experiance- the cartoon of how he came to be Ichi the killer is possibly better though. That's REALLY good.

PI- this film was so good in some ways and so bad in others. The basic concept, the cinematography, the ending- all great.
I didn't like the cabbalist cult people though- when they got in on the act it got a bit silly. Oh and call me petty but I just wish they'd been better at GO- I paused the screen to have a look at their game and it wasn't very good. So much inefficient shape- learn to play people.

Lock Stock is brilliant, it really draws you into it's world. I can still quote half of that film. Snatch was a bit disappointing afterwards- like lock stock with the humour ripped out.

There are some films that are just so bad but somehow seem to attract a cult following. Equilibrium is my pet hate here. Oh and also Underworld. Bad Bad Bad

Election is a great film. I could spend ages saying why but I'll leave it.

Kill Bill is really not that good. No consistency, no depth, no characterisation.

Kill Bill is really not that good. No consistency, no depth, no characterisation.

***WARNING - Spoilers and a tendancy to ramble from a guy who reads FAR too much into things...***



I maintain that Kill Bill MIGHT've been a stronger film as one volume... But on a personal perspective I have to disagree that it lacks depth and characterisation.



Ironically I found that the action-heavy Vol.1 had more depth and character than the supposedly more character-driven Vol.2. For me it was all about reading between the lines and not having them spelled out for you which a normal action fill may attempt to do (with varying degrees of success).



In particular the character of O-Ren Ishii. Her history had so much in terms relating to her character in the present that her thoughts were clear in the slightest gesture or facial expression.



She became Queen of the Yakuza, which was in effect the ultimate revenge for the murder of her parents. Instead of destroying them (Boss Matsumoto and Tanaka aside), she now lords over them, humiliation being a fate worse than death is a prevelant attitude in more Eastern cultures. In conflict to where she is now, she obviously loved her parents whom she had avenged. And her vengeance was meant to honour them. But in doing so she had corrupted herself, going against what her (presumably) innocent parents stood for. She has in essence become what killed her parents in the first place. Having reigned over the Yakuza, there is nowhere left for her to go. She seems ill at ease with her position, despite ruling it with an iron fist (as evident in the scene when one of her Crazy 88 cronies is miming an anecdote about a presumed sexual conquest (much to the disgust of Sofie Fatale), she seems like an outsider, she laughs politely but does not at any point revel in its decadance). Based on this, one can assume that, while victorious, she is ashamed of who she has become and when Black Mamba comes a-calling, this is the perfect opportunity to find redemption, for both her descent into corruption, and more directly, for her hand in The Bride's wedding massacre - mirroring her own tragedy. It can be argued that this is what is preying on both O-Ren's and The Bride's minds during the lull in the snow-covered garden sword fight. Both of them silently acknowledging each other's personal tragedies whilst still respecting their honour as warriors... She did not go without giving it her all in the final fight, the person who has the honour of killing her deserves nothing less... At the end O-Ren seems at peace after being defeated and appears honoured at being killed by a worthy opponent - worthy enough to be brandishing a Hattori Hanzo katana sword at that.



Speaking of Hattori Hanzo. Sometimes the strongest bond is one between a man and his God. I found the idea that a man who breaks his vow to his God both poigniant and heartbreaking.

- Hanzo goes back on his promise to never make an instrument of death to make a sword for The Bride in a quest for vengeance against a man HE trained. He feels that foresaking his own redemption to help someone else find theirs. It is unsure whether he knows that this will actually aid his own redemption by helping to clean up his mess rather than running away from it in a sushi bar.



The film also touches questions on the difference between revenge and justice - the confrontation with Vernita Green. Is it truly justice if The Bride cold-bloodedly murders the mother of a young child? Nope revenge pure and simple. But The Bride acknowledges this enough to let Nikki know that she will welcome - and deserve - any attempt to avenge her mother in the future (Budd's acknowledgement of 'That woman deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die...' can also be applied to this)



The twist ending also elevates the film to a whole new level, promising an emotional payoff (underscored by the reprise of Zamfir's haunting melody 'The Lonely Shepherd' playing over the credits) that Vol.2 fails to deliver in a satisfying and engaging manner...

I suppose this is an arguement for the idea that - regardless of the quality of the film - you get from a film what you yourself bring to it...
