I never understood the problem with Ebaums world. One cannot steal what is being given away for free. If you are standing on the street corner handing out your poems for free, I can erase your name at the bottom and put my own. There is nothing illegal or immoral about this, because you are giving them away.

Of course, it is easy to stop this. All you need to is put the word "copyright" or the little circle C symbol on your poem. Then, you can give it away for free, but I can't change it or put my name on it unless you give me permission to. I can't copy it and give it to other people. You retain the "copy rights."

If you don't want ebaum to host your stuff. Copyright it. Then, if he hosts it you can sue him and get lots of money.

I have produced songs and given them away free on the internet. I don't care if people host them, or claim them as their own, or remix them, or whatever. By releasing them free of copyright, I gave up all my rights to them. They are now public domain.

I've seen that flash animation before, and browsed through the web site. I do not see any allegations that he has stolen copyrighted material. If I have missed something, please point out to me where ebaum has stolen something that belonged to someone else, and I will join you in condemning and boycotting him.

It might not be illegal, but it's unquestionably immoral to steal somebody else's work.

Speaking of which, that's a seriously groovetastic video.

The creators of the flash animation are artists, they work hard to produce original entertainment like this for us all to enjoy. Unfortunately we live in a world where artists like these are being exploited, and others are profiting from their hard work. There are many sites that do this, but Ebaumsworld is the worst offender.

Eric Bauman has been making a great deal of money from the work of others for many years, and refuses to acknowledge that what he is doing is both illegal and immoral. Our goal is to stop him.

Short list of complaints

Various complaints about the more famous stuff

Somewhere on the site there are accusations of malicious scripts on the EBW against Something Awful and DDoS attacks, but I can't find them at the moment, they may have been removed.

Obligatory Wikipedia article.

My contention was that if you give it away for free with no limitations on it, it is no longer "your work." Thus, he does not steal it by hosting it. When he puts his "hosted by Ebaumsworld" sticker on your photo and doesn't give you credit, he is not taking anything that belongs to you (unless you copyrighted it).

I would agree that it is rude, and that it would be polite of him to tell where the material comes from. I have had many web sites ask me for permission to use my songs, even though I had released them into the public domain. It would not have been immoral or illegal for them to host them without asking me, but they did it anyways to be polite.

I browsed through the complaints. They are mostly just people whining for not getting credit. They are mad that he took their name off the corner of the image, and put his own on instead.

The solution is simple. Add a little copyright symbol as well as your name. If you do that, it would be illegal and immoral for him to change it or take credit for it. Otherwise, you have simply put out a bunch of pixels into the public domain, saying essentially "do whatever you want with these."

It's just like these forum posts. This post is probably considered "public domain" (the international issues complicate things, as does the agreement we entered into while registering). As part of the public domain, any of you can take the things I write and put them on your own website, without giving me credit. You can alter the language as you see fit. You can stick your own name on the end.

It might be rude and deceptive, but it is not "stealing." To take credit for my work would not be an immoral action against me, it would be against the people you are decieving. I have given up these words, and have no interest in what is done with them.

To illustrate, check out somethingawful.com. One of their articles right now consists of funny posts taken from the forums on other web sites.

I'm going to throw this out to the wider community now as this is were my limited knowledge of copyright law faulters.

As I understand it, internet copyright law is still very fuzzy. At least in the UK it seems as if copyright law is only really defined for things that can be made into hard copys. It also seems that you need to register your work and pay a fee. The people that produce these things cant afford this, and especially can't afford to compete with the behemoth of EBW in the courts.

This mostly boils down to respect. One man has become very rich through other people's work, and importantly, refuses to give credit to those that deserve it. Most of the people that complain arn't looking for money or royalties, only credit for their work. Which seems fair enough to me.

-Edit-

Well deleating that post didnt have the effect I was looking for. Point was that although this thread is dead I felt this article should be tacked on the end because it dealt nicely with issues raised.

Here's an idea. We could discuss the ingenuity and further applications of this new juggling technique in this thread. We could discuss the legal and ethical concerns about internet copyright in a new thread in the social discussion section. Just a suggestion.

WOW *in awe*

Anyone know if Greg Kennedy came up with the cone idea?

How long must he have spent in there getting whacked and thinking 'nah, this can never work'?!

What if he had lasers aligned so as to paint laser lights onto the glass, so that every time a ball made a circle it cut through the laser lights.

And what if the balls were clear crystals, that would catch and refract the light. That would be awesome.

Plus, everything should be wrapped in bacon and on fire. With ninjas dropping out of helicopters.

It's great that he took it up a notch, now it's time to take it further...

Yeah! Ninjas!

Doing it in mostly dark with UV, so you'd sort of only see the balls orbiting.

And Pirates!

And Pirate Ninjas!
