Hey all
i hope u'll all understand me when i say how the hell do i do 'huggies.' I've just come back from the clapham common meeting (awesome guys
) and someone there was telling me about how you sort of hug urself and do a trick behind ur back but they werent all that sure about uit themselves to be able to explain to me....like what tricks u can do, how to get into it and the general technique. Any useful tips or links to other websites would be great

smooth entry into the move, minimal upper body movement (considering the parameters of the move) firm stance, smooth exit, no hitting of the noggin.
And he made it look so good that some random bloke went, 'what the f**k, that's impossible!' as he walked by open-mouthed.

you obviously dig sj's.
i've seen rob spin them (as clean as anyone i've seen spin them) and the "minimal upper body movement (considering the parameters of the move)" still contains too much of an "i'm moving because i have to" element for my tastes.
i never said that they're not hard and again, i'm not saying they're rubbish - they're just not my thing.

have you seen the sjs in my practice vid cole? I know the lighting in it was crap... as was the admittedly horrible song... but I'd have to say the sj's there were pretty frickin smooth.. though I'm sure rob can do them as smooth as I.. but I cant be the judge of tat since the last time I saw rob spin was in the spinach sessions.. and that was hardly a display of his feline prowess not to mention much outdated..
oh and for the record.. I'm not arguing that they are not hard.. or that they are your thing.. just that they can be done with virtually no body.. (by virtually no movement I mean that you only need move enough to get one elbow farther out than the other.. whihc is a movement of each elbow front and back about 3".. but that's with short poi.. longer poi could reduce that a lot..

they flow as nicely as my inversions.. (whihc stands to reason that they are just inversions) but still.. if you've seen the several inversion clips I have floating around.. they flow like that..

ah... that would be the difference then. I actually find poi-generated body movement quite aesthetically pleasing. It's finding the balance between poi generated movement and self generated movement that I find most interesting (
don't want to start another dance discussion, there's been plenty of that recently)Rev: your sj's are most fine
I think I really liked rob's cos it was entered from below rather than above and so looked even more impossible (hence random bloke's comment). Can I ask for another vid (i.e a complete set rather than a tutorial) with more light in it? please? I'm always interested to see how they fit into part of a wider picture than just the move on their own..I have been trying sj's myself, but at the moment, my movements are very similar to 'elbow poi'. Still fun to try though.

I think this weekend will be the last time I'll be by here until december, unless I can check the forum from my phone during class. I've been slacking hardcore lately, and now have to talk to 20 different schools phd programs.. apply to them all (at roughly $65 per app per school) Take the GRE again $115 (plus I have to prep it..) and I'm getting raped on the scharges to have my scores sent to all the other schools.. (15 bux per school after 4 and get charged $6 per call to add them and I can only add 8 at a time) I'm pretty pissed off.. nay.. extremely pissed off.. so now I have to rewrite my current thesis draft, right a 20 page draft for one class, and another 15 page draft for a second class.. and hope one of those is good enough to put with all my applications or else I'm looking at ANOTHER 15 pg paper to write.. I didnt realize the work I had to do and now I've totally screwed myself.. I wont even be on the spherc dvd..

lol, awesome picture. I've tried to do that thing that u were talking about cole.. about spinning in wheel plane then turning-1 beat- then turning and thats fine but it doesnt relaly give the same look as this.

hey sinner - a hug is quite different to an sj.
hugs don't require your arms to be 'tangled' whereas sj's do.
the directions you refer to there were for learning to spin regular (1st degree?) hugs.
i don't know if that would apply to sj's because i don't do sj's at all - i don't like the look of them much so i never bothered to try to learn them (same reason i don't do any horizontal moves, any btl stuff, anything above 5bts in a weave and so on).
the directions i gave for hugs might help you learn sj'd if you start with arms folded instead of arms crossed but they wouldn't help you get into or out of them.

sjs are just a position.. like any other position... hehe.. hugs are also a position.. but the thing is huggy weaves look like utter crap, no matter how nice you do them.. so everyone only does huggy reels.. (those would still be zero degree cole.. degrees count to crossover, not to position..reels (even crossers like hugs) never crossover each other. they always stay in seperate planes..)
sj's however look good doing either reels or weaves.. I prefer the weave version (ala my practice vid) while most others prefer the reel version..

Huggies(Crossers) => Cross-over basic move and its turn.
SJs(Straight Jackets) => One arm straight, one arm shoulder.

what is 'crossover' if its not a position?
i guess we have different ways of thinking about degrees of crossover.
i consider it to be equivalent to the number of circles performed by hands in the same plane before the poi move to separate planes again.
that way of thinking about it came from trying to describe offset weaves.
and as a hug is an 'offset reel' in my head, degrees of crossover still make sense when describing hugs.
when considered like that, it seems that if there is no crossover involved, it would be impossible to get into them in the first place.

I think he's talking about tenticle's degree of crossover notation here which is something different.

thanks spiral.. that's exactly what I was tlaking about... I even put up a description of degree stuff in the punk thread with the rest of my tuts... (something I need to finish once this semester is over.. )
I simply meant that a reel doesnt cross since they are always in opposite planes.. whether crosser or not... though I do see where the position could be called that..
Thinking about it now.. I'm not sure if I stand by my previous comment or not.. one the one hand, there arent any crossovers... but on the other hand, if you take spinning on your normal sides, and cross to the opposite at the same time.. isnt that still technically a reel.. so then reels can crossover.. (and why not sj reels are just inverted reels) but you cant reel into and sj either.. you have to weave and then reel.. well maybe not.. but it would be REALLY hard to...
dunno.. if it matters at all.. I'll just retract my statement for the sake of argument.. because I can argue either way... so if anyone gives you crap again cole.. I'll back you on calling crossers first degree moves

Don't have a link and a search doesn't turn up the original post. There might be a thread on Spherc, dunno. Oh, it doesn't seem to be up anymore. But basically a first degree crossover is a 3bt cross so +1, second degree is 5bt cross which is +2 etc. So 3bt is 1+1 = 2, 5bt = 2+2 = 4, basic offset weave is 2 + -1 IIRC and so on, it all works out nicely. Tenticle would be the one to ask for details

yeah.. but the thing was.. tenticles system is good.. but you ahve to mod it.. because the way he listed it made it hard to differentiate between certain types of moves and positions...
I dont want this to be a long tirade here, so I'm going to create a thread.. so I dont jack this one..

ummm... mine does not have one hand btb...
and now that I reread spirals. I remember that mine went +/- for balancing weaves... and tenticle wanted positives to be set weaves... and +/- to be offset.. which didnt really make much sense to me.. speaking of whihc.. where is he... I havent seen him post in a while.. though I havent been around much either..

i have no idea what that notation means, but i think SJ's look the bomb, allowing for the fact that sloppy execution could easily make this move look fugly.
