Why not staff?

Everyone?

Not really everyone. A lot of people do it, but its nowhere near as mainstream as poi.

Staffers are one of the "indie-manipulators" wink

Rope Dart is a martial art type job where you have a long piece of rope with a wight on one end. You swing it around some, and wrap it around ya neck.

A good example would be in Kill Bill. Remeber Go-Go, that Japanese girl with the ball and chain? That's rope dart.

There's aslo some cool rope dart in a Jet-Li movie called Romeo Must Die. He uses a fire hose to kick some serious ass smile

mmmmm sticky...
theres a few good sites for wholesome sticky goodness.

https://www.devilstick.nl/
is a forum for devilstickers. Its not too busy but hasnt been up that long.
https://www.devilstick.de/english/home.htm
has loads of tricks to learn.
https://www.stixguru.com/home.html
has loads of tricks - they are done with a flowerstick but pretty much all are possible with a devilstick with some serious practise.

If you are getting a devilstick it should keep you busy for a while. Just be inventive with that. I've been playing with contacty staffy stuff with my sticks recently. So far the result has mostly been pain but I'm sure it will come together.

Here's an idea...
Take your poi and attach them to either end of a, let's say, 20" sitck.. does anyone ever do this?
I've been thinking it would be fun to make one with shorter chains and play like devilsticks..
If you wanted to play it like a staff, just make it longer...

what d' ya think??

Hmm, isn't it about time??

I saw someone spinning staff and poi on the end.

Wasn't impressed that much. It basically looks like a staff with four wicks.

LOL read the only reviewer
"Ok, after an accident by busting one of my "Meteor Hammers", I thought I was through, until I ordered the "Rope Dart". It's small, but also heavy. Easily hidden in your pocket, just pratice pulling it out velociously.

This thing is bad and I enjoy it. Unfortunatly, I haven't used on anybody yet, but it's something good to have walking by yourself, since we all know I hate guns.

If you're into Chinese Martial Arts, Check out the rope dart."

I just got a load of rope and tied a monkey fist knot at the end as a weight, that worked pretty well.

Shurikens. No. Be careful with martial arts weapons. They are just that. Weapons. and very dangerous if used either correctly or incorrectly. A lot of martial arts weapons are illegal to take out in public.

I can do a bit of nunchaku. I had to make sure that the person who runs my student halls knew I did this, and that I owned such things, so that if I was seen with them in my room or in the grounds, I wouldn't get in trouble for owning/using such a thing. It only takes one person to say 'he was using such and such weapon' or 'he had such and such weapon' and you get a visit from armed police. As far as I'm aware (and I may be wrong) on private property is ok (such as halls/home etc) as long as the person 'in charge' knows about it and is ok with it. Carrying on the street (unless with valid reason, ie on way to martial arts lessons, and even then, carrying openly on the street) is illegal, and you will be arrested and have it confiscated. Be careful with laws. They can land you in trouble. smile

Why is there this aversion to making your own stuff? Why do some people just HAVE to buy it instead of spending a bit of time to make it (and no money)?

Some people just are not artisitic or able to make something without making it into a complete and utter mess (I am one of these wonderfully talented people) so it is easier to buy it or get someone else to make it instead of it all ending up in frustration...

I was going to say something similar, but then I realised that as long as no-one actually uses the prop that you come up with, it's still original.

So, my suggestion is a bright red gimp suit with parrots on strings tied to the shoulders, poi tied to the wrists, elbows and groin, a bucket full of worms strapped to the back, and golden retrievers tied to the feet.
I hope that's helpfull smile wink

Just to play devil advocate, if you want to do some thing original then starting with rope dart is a bad idea as it's been around for hundreds if not thousands of years and as such is hardly original. I like the other approch, like mine too, buy or make anything and add fire to it. This is far more likly to produce an original style.

Also on the stick with two poi on the end idea, this can be used very similar to a three section staff (another chinese weapon). It can be flung straight round so it looks like a staff or the ends of the stick can be held and the cahin ends rotated like poi (with wide hands) and moves like butterfly done, body wraps and even high throws. I made one a few years ago when I was on a Thai island for 6months, it does work and various moves or styles are possable but to be honest I didn't like it that much and would rather use a three section staff which can do the same things but other moves too as the end sections can be used for control too as theyre solid. My friend used to do three section staff on fire as well, looked very cool. Fire nunchuku can look cool if well done (and thats not me folks).

if anyone knows where I can find more rope dart moves then PLEASE post.

I'd rather go Poi with myself!

Hmmm oh I had a thought!

Try a length of rope (or something) with poi balls at each end sort of like a floppy staff. Hows that for orrgional?

Or what about a large shuriken looking frame, with poi balls attached to the ends (where the sharp killing bits would be) and spin thema bit like a fire fan, difference is this one goes round in full circle not just a semi circle.
