Today I was talking to a friend who leads a group of performers. Last week they were hired by a production team to help them with a fire performance for a TV show.

As George(G) - the friend said, the firs impression was good, nice people, a guy(P.. guess why..) and his wife, expensive car, so he thought they must be very good at what they do if they can afford this. It was a while later that he was about to see how wrong first impressions can be.

At first this guy starts to boast about how good he is, how many people he knows and how he is a good at doing stunts, falling from 25 m heights and stuff. When G asks him how long he spins with fire the guy says "Since monday." help

Then they come to the studio to set up.
G: Who will coordinate our performance?
P: What? Why coordinate? Everyone knows what they have to do!
help

Then P packs out their equipment. He spins staff which is basically a 2.1 m long branch from a tree. Then he takes out something that 10 years ago was a windowshade and starts wrapping it around the staff as a wick.
G: What's that for..?
P: You know, fire! When it burns nice sparks fly out!
G: But we will be spinning in between people!
P: Dont worry nothing will happen, it's safe!
confused2

Those two also brought a friend who does all those oriental stunts like sword swallowing and breathing and walking on glass and stuff (can't remember what's it called...) - Roman (R). G and R start talking.
R: What chemicals do you use for breathing?
G: -tells him-
R: Yea me too, I was also thinking of trying petrol..
help

Next:
P: Can you teach my two sons to breath fire?
G: umm How old are they?
P: 10 and 12
G: eek
P: I think it would look nice during a performance..
G: Do you actually know what could happen?
P: A burn or two maximum.. Don't worry they will take care..
G: WHAT? What if they breath in fire? Cancer? 50% mortality rate when they burn their lungs?
P: What? Breathing is really THAT risky?
help

And so on and so on.. There was more, I might write if I remember.. The whole performance did not happen coz of the two guys (P&R) incopentency.. G and his friends were just opening doors to the studio in the end. But some bottom line:

The group's name was Aura Mori.. Which George said was very appropriate..It means Breath of Death.. G felt very much like dying the whole afternoon he was with them.

After telling the story another friend remembered that this weekend he was with a theather group who had fired two of their members. Tose two had then taken all of the groups equipment and much money and bought a brand new car. Guess who..

And a quote of the day from George about the petrol spitting Roman :" Hey now there's a professional! It's like Igor can hang himself, Peter can get caved in in a mine and Dragon will have a heart attack coz he doesn't know how to spit petrol!"(All very experienced breathers)

ahh terrible terrible..

Smile.. It confuses people..:)

The existance of flamethrowers says that someone, somewhere, at sometime said "I need to set that thing on fire, but it's too far away."

The scary part is do you stay and stop them or do you leave and let them kill themselves ruining fire arts for everyone? Tough call.

Yeah, I'd have to try and stop them... else my insurance will go though the roof wink

ubblol

I know it's not actually funny that people that incompetant are trying to do fire. Maybe we need some kind of Guild that you need membership of before you're allowed... With a nice pretty certificate and membership card... ubbrollsmile

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

actually this was exactly as we took it.. Like hey, look at our ugly poi and staves.. And kevlar..? No way.. old windowshades are the way to go..

Actually we are seriously considering to invite the two to some of our workshops to do a show.. For other spinners to consider what NOT to do in a performance..

And this is really really scary.. I have read even here of irresponsible people and stupid spinners but this is like all of them rolled into one! But one thing keeps me calm, Slovakia is a small country and this will spread VERY fast.. I'm not happy about ruinings someone's reputation but these folks really deserve it..

i think thats a great idea. we should put em in a fire proof glass box and get them to do a show.

hmm . . . guild. nice idea but there would be WAY too many arguments about the initiation proccess. as in age limits, experience, etc . . . so lets just hope there are enough safe burners to keep our good name!
