Ok people I know this is covering old ground
it is just this is really starting to get me down 
I cant even be bothered to go to the chat section cos of this sort of thing.
There is a full discussion going on in a thread by linden rathen on [Old link]
I just wanted to get your opinion on some of the game threads in chat this is a list of all the ones I came across on the first page.
Ok ok some of them aren’t strictly games but they all contain one or two word posts.
Now I haven’t picked out just the ones I dislike because I actually think one or two of these threads are quite enjoyable and some even funny
.
So if you dislike a thread or want it locked or deleted vote for it. If you like a thread or think its funny simply don’t vote for it.
I don’t want to stir up bad blood just gauging an opinion poll…..

like I said in the post-whoring thread, many people, like myself cannot travel too meets due to whatever reason, so i think posting random whoopsies tends to become a more of a habit than an actual conscious decision to become a post-whore.

So far ive avoided on commenting on this topic, but i feel i want to now, so here goes.
Yes there is a lot of sh*t in the chat forum, ive noticed the increase and ive only been here just over a month. And yes ive posted in a fair amount of it, as a sence of unity and socialism is gained from this. And being fairly new, this helps the 'settling in' process. But i am too getting bored of the useless chaff thats keeps appearing.
However, many of you guys know each other, and for people like myself, this is a life-line to the world of poi, and more importantly, to you lot, actual real poiers and staffers. My point is that its not all that bad. The 'crappy' threads have established links with people. I now know Mynci by his first name, and ive been PMing with a guy from Glasgow (yes all those miles away). This wouldnt have happened without some of these threads. It is clear that the majority of 'crappy' threads have been posted by newbies (see the link im making), just to get in on some of the social action, because for the moment thats all we have...poiers replying to threads.
It feels like weve all been naughty kids, and anyone with 10million posts or a registered date from 3yrs ago is showing us the back of their hand. I do not deny you the freedom to comdem these threads, but do not punish us for wanting to feel part of the circle.
I know action has to be taken, and its great that actual HoPers (not just moderators) are taking part in keeping the place in ship shape. Thumbs up to you all.
Some threads are essential to adding an ounce of hilarity into the forum, and threads that allow you to learn something about someone are very important too, just not 25 of them.
I guess what im saying is that i know a lot of anger, stress and frustration has come from all these threads, but so too have new, friendships, bonds, laughter and chance meetings. its like a little light in a storm.

Well guys i was a newbie once, as were about 15000 other people, and we all managed and felt welcome, things havent changed, if anything i think its got slightly worse simply cos almost due to these threads people seem to take this site for more of a piss about site rather than a mix of fun AND serious stuff, this is also proved by the fact ive noticed a lot of newbies pretty much stay in the intros or social chat, i dont believe we need all these stupid game threads for HoP to remain a welcoming place for newbies, I think its terrible if this place relied on those crap threads to make ppl feel welcome, ive had ppl make me feel welcome in every single forum on this site, even the moves section, if we did rely on them, what would that say about us, make newbies feel welcome in introductions, thats what its meant for.

People will start it again, they always have. So how is deleting it going to make it any better?
This thread is a good example of things coming back up again.
There is already a thread discussing this very topic.
A simple search, or a look back two pages or so would have popped it up.
It is *chat*. It *is* fun for others. And just because you do not like it does not give anyone the right to insult what others find entertaining. Obviously, if these were not of interest to someone, they would have died...as *many* have in the history of this site.
As long as there is conversation (a give and take more than smilies), and it follows the rules of conduct I don't see a reason to shut anything down.
There are TONNES of threads that have gone through social discussion which have been far more controversial or annoying, and we managed to keep them peaceable.
I am disappointed greatly that anyone on here would think it important enough to squash someone else's fun while all they have to do is not click on the thread to avoid it. It is very sad to me, and I don't even participate in those threads but I recognise that they spark conversations, allow people to connect over things they do and do not like, allow people to get to know one another (likes, dislikes, how their brains work) and they keep this type of stuff from bleeding into other forums.
Personally, I find this entire debate very sad and think in general people need to find more important things to split hairs over than pointless threads.
And yet alot of them are encouraged and not everyone sees things as alienating. It is better to have both available than to severly limit people more than we already have. This is also why we have social chat and social discussion...to accomodate both.
Again I say, I am really disappointed in all of this and if you don't like it, then don't look. It is really very easy to do (I know, I do it all the time. )

but if bandwidth/cost/speed are a problem, and 'chat games' are a currently enjoyable resource without much historical value (as compared to technical stuff)..then it would be possible/desirable to delete them once they haven't been used for a while no? If it's a fun game they could easily be restarted later, without people having to deal with 40, 50, 150 pages? Not in anger, just to make things easy...

We originally split the Social chat from the Social discussion so that those who wanted to participate in mindless games didnt get in the way of people who want to use their brain cells for intelligent discussion. I think it was a very good idea and still works remarkably well. If people are thinking that social chat is boring and mindless, thats great! thats what its for! Come join the ranks of social discussion

My advise to everyone who is upset by social chat, is to let it go. You are now standing exactly where we were when it was decided to create social chat in the first place.

I don't 'chat' much because I often find it a bit juvinile BUT when I do, it's often the smaller, less popular threads that I enjoy.
Yeah, I think the idea of rating ANYTHING on HoP that is based on opinion and cliques (rather than usefulness of technical advice which is useful) is only setting people up to use it as a way to bully people. I'm generally someone who doesn't mind exerting myself so it wouldn't affect me as much as it would affect those who might get swept under the rug.
If there's a movement to split 'chat' into:
-Informal Conversation
and
-Innane Nonsense
I guess I'd support that.

You're much likely not at the point yet where you can discuss technicalities with people who've been poiing for years. I've been doing it for nearly a year now, and I think I'm ok for the time I've invested, but if I go and look at most of the threads about advanced moves I don't understand half the terminology, and sometimes I think it's more or less friends discussing and showing off things they'll only get between them, even a very decent poier who's not been on HoP wouldn't get it.
If you post "I've learned the reverse 3 beat weave" in the "I've learned a new trick" thread you'll not get any acknowledgement from anyone, because most people don't look at it, and the ones who do and look for new tricks will just yawn at another newbie.

So I can understand why lots of people stick to "safe" things like chat and introductions, it's really hard to get involved in the more serious stuff on the page.
Maybe a "poi moves for newbies" section would help, where beginners/newbies can help each other out, not be moaned at for asking the same questions again, and where more experienced people can give advice if they want to and get to know the newbies better, too?

But we never shout or have a go at newbies simply cos we know that they arent too aware of how the site works etc so we will always give newbies a polite answer to their question and just remind them in future to do a search next time, witha helpful smiley of course

So I can understand why lots of people stick to "safe" things like chat and introductions, it's really hard to get involved in the more serious stuff on the page.
Maybe a "poi moves for newbies" section would help, where beginners/newbies can help each other out, not be moaned at for asking the same questions again, and where more experienced people can give advice if they want to and get to know the newbies better, too?
But we never shout or have a go at newbies simply cos we know that they arent too aware of how the site works etc so we will always give newbies a polite answer to their question and just remind them in future to do a search next time, witha helpful smiley of course

But it's still got the same effect, you come to a forum about poi and can't actually post about much to do with poi (except on page 246 of "which type of poi do you prefer), so you go to the social threads instead. I wasn't having a go at anyone here But I've seen people come up with arguments like "so what are you doing in the discussion forum anyways? I've just looked at your posts and you haven't posted anything to do with poi or staff, so I wonder what you do on the forum". Admittedly it was as a response to a post of debatable quality, but the fact remains that for newbies there's not many poi/staff-related threads to post in.

Lastly, I've been getting the impression that those who feel 'chat' has gone downhill have been migrating to 'discussion'. I feel that it's important for those who do to respect the rules; recently several threads have been started in 'discussion' that were not appropriate, and been moved to 'chat' (and, if 'chat' is split or otherwise improved, it is similarly down to the regualrs there to contribute to keeping it on track by politely commenting when they see abuse, or reporting inappropriate threads to the mods).

This is how I view HoP as it is currently..
It's like a house.
Intro forum is like the front porch where you introduce yourself and let those here know more about you.
Social Chat is the foyer, where you take off your coat, feel things out and get comfy.
Social Discussion and Help are like the Living Rooms/Lounges to me. It is where reality creeps in and anything can happen, but it is okay because at this point you have your shoes off and your feet up and you feel safe.
Technical...the entire section remind me of the kitchen, the bathroom and the laundry room. In there is where you cook stuff up, work crap out and clean it up.
Events, Performances and Gatherings is like the back deck...it's where you are invited to come out and play and have a good time.
And this house went through alot of rennovating over the years to where we actually got it to work, and other than tidying up...I don't see that major rennovations are necessary. And what is being discussed here will make one of the steps to getting into this house a bit more unwelcoming.
I find it interesting that the "old skool" members have been called out as being unwelcoming and yet it is the relatively new members who are the ones complaining here, and several of the older ones recognising the usefulness of many of the threads in dispute, or at least the fact that there is no point in getting rid of them. Huh.

I think chat is definately important, but said before I and many others don't look in there anymore, because there are too many nonsence threads, meaning that there definately is a case for maybe splitting the forums or limiting these threads down, but not eliminating them. It can be very difficult finding the good threads in there now, its not just a case of avoiding them, as you can only find out in some by actually clicking on them which is a time consuming process.
