I have less than fifty posts, and know no-ones first name, but feel no need to post inane one worded replies to daft and pointless posts. I feel much more comfortable getting to know people by discussing subjects with them on the discussions board as i feel you get to know people better that way.

The way i see it, deleting these threads does no harm, if people feel passionate about it they can create it again, however leaving these threads around seem to be creating so much tension, why cant we just bump them off

Arty Farty (which makes me smile when i type it today for some reason) i see your point, but these posts must alienate as many newbies as they encourage. I have moderated forums in the past, and know that a lot of new people will go nowhere near a thread that has more than a few pages

We originally split the Social chat from the Social discussion so that those who wanted to participate in mindless games didnt get in the way of people who want to use their brain cells for intelligent discussion. I think it was a very good idea and still works remarkably well. If people are thinking that social chat is boring and mindless, thats great! thats what its for! Come join the ranks of social discussion![]()
Or perhaps we need a few gradations of forum between social chat and social discussion? perhaps we need a forum called 'completely mindless' and maybe one called 'injokes', another called 'not completely mindless creative games' but I think there would be a lot of argument put up by different people as to which threads should be in which forum.
My advise to everyone who is upset by social chat, is to let it go. You are now standing exactly where we were when it was decided to create social chat in the first place.
Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

a lot of newbies pretty much stay in the intros or social chat.

True true... but then I can somewhat understand that. For a newbie, you can't really post much in the moves sections: If you have a question about a move, someone will have asked it before, so if you post it again you'll get at least one "DO A SEARCH!".
You're much likely not at the point yet where you can discuss technicalities with people who've been poiing for years. I've been doing it for nearly a year now, and I think I'm ok for the time I've invested, but if I go and look at most of the threads about advanced moves I don't understand half the terminology, and sometimes I think it's more or less friends discussing and showing off things they'll only get between them, even a very decent poier who's not been on HoP wouldn't get it.
If you post "I've learned the reverse 3 beat weave" in the "I've learned a new trick" thread you'll not get any acknowledgement from anyone, because most people don't look at it, and the ones who do and look for new tricks will just yawn at another newbie.
Social Discussion is often quite heated and can be intimidating, also people tend to comment either less or more critically on posts of people they don't know.
So I can understand why lots of people stick to "safe" things like chat and introductions, it's really hard to get involved in the more serious stuff on the page.
Maybe a "poi moves for newbies" section would help, where beginners/newbies can help each other out, not be moaned at for asking the same questions again, and where more experienced people can give advice if they want to and get to know the newbies better, too?

And yet alot of them are encouraged and not everyone sees things as alienating. It is better to have both available than to severly limit people more than we already have. This is also why we have social chat and social discussion...to accomodate both.

But we never shout or have a go at newbies simply cos we know that they arent too aware of how the site works etc so we will always give newbies a polite answer to their question and just remind them in future to do a search next time, witha helpful smiley of course![]()

And Pele i do understand your argument for the 'If you dont like the thread dont click on it' But for me who used to besomeone who went in social chat a lot simply cos there were lots of funny stuff on their to relax my mind with, now its hard to find those funny pages simply cos the game threads take up half the first page, thats the problem, anything that people post just gets lost in the ether so quickly, i remember it used to be u could post something in social chat and it normally wouldnt sink to page 2 till after a day at least, now things go so quickly, but i guess thats due to the growing size of our community
