my friend Don, a Christian whom i know will be able to access Judaic rites with some guidance, sits by my side with a long-handled lighter before him. before me sits the slice of richly syruped, golden Greek almond-orange cake before me, a rossette of custard on the top, and 3 pink and white spiral candles.

The shechechianu is one of my favorite prayers. You're supposed to say it when you see something amazing or when you do soemthing for the first time (like put on a new item of clothing). I'm not that obsessive about it, but in times of awe, my friends have heard me start muttering in Hebrew under my breath.
