As some of you may already know we've got an incubator and have been tring to breed quail. The first attempt was unsuccessful and we think this was because the quail that laid the eggs were past their peak laying age.

Three weeks ago we bought some free range hens eggs from the local farm shop and put them in the incubator, a week later we did the same with some quail eggs (so they would all hatch at the same time) and we have had success!!

So far we have had two chickens hatch. We have also had two quails hatch - the stripey one in the middle and the other one is hiding behind the yellow chick. As you can see in the picture, another hens egg looks like it is going to hatch too biggrin

Once they have all dried out and gone fluffy we will put them under a heat lamp for a couple of weeks, then they will get to go outside into the run in the garden. I'll keep posting pics because it is quite amazing to see how quickly they grow up!

If any one can think of any name suggestions that would be great! (no fried chicken references please! biggrin )

Yes indeedy... googling 'how to make a monkey fist knot' came up with photgraphs and an 'instruction video clip' that weren't quite what I meant.... eek

Congratulations on the new arrivals... they're gorgeous!

I think myco has made up for the earlier bullying incident by being possibly the most sweet, caring considerate chick in the world!! ....

...the quail keep falling over and getting stuck on their backs (the are very clumsy!). Normally it takes a lot of frantic wriggling to get back up the right way. Myco noticing a quail in distress, ran over and pulled the quail back on to its feet by tugging on its wing! I have seen it do this several times now and it really is so funny to watch biggrin

This is going to get confusing talking about chicks named after HoPers!

the latest chick
This chick hatched a few hours ago. We weren't sure if it was going to make it. It has a wonky leg, we're not sure if it is going to sort itself out or if it is going to be 'special' and limp forever frown It is the last to hatch BUT...

My boyfriend's mum just gave us some eggs that she got from a farm shop, two are are just normal hens eggs, two are white hens eggs and two are blue (yes really blue! eek). We are not sure what they are...some kind of strange hen! We are going to pop them in the incubator and see what happens! (they should hatch 21 days from now)

Our weird chicken with the fluffy ears used to lay kinda greenish blue eggs. Then she went all neurotic and stopped laying. But we found the other chook so they are happier.

does this mean i'm not really a vegetarian? moral dilemma...

eating unfertalised eggs is fine as a vegetarian

Written by: myco

do i eat foetuses or support torturous living conditions of the layers?

you'd know if you were eating a foetus. As for supporting torturous living conditions, it depends what you classify as torturous. There's plenty of info online, such as this from the UK vegetarian society and this from the UK vegan society about the conditions of laying hens/chickens involved in creating vegetarian products.

Written by: .:star:.

so there's no need to turn vegan just yet!!

It's up to you to make up your own mind as to whether vegetarianism is enough to ensure you're not involved with animal suffering. It's worth doing some reading on the subject if it's something you're passionate about
