Ello ello.

I've made a few random posts here and there but everyone seems really nice so I thought I'd say hi properly.

Hi. biggrin

So, me then: 23, London. I've been twirling a staff for about a month now. I did some karate when I was at school and pissed about with a bo in the back garden a lot. Skip to four years later and I became entracned by a friend doing some funky similar-looking spinning at a party. But on fire. eek And fire-spinning seemed to fit in perfectly with the type of sports/activities I'm good at, i.e. those where (a) my life is in some immediate danger smile, and (b) I don't have to hit or catch any balls (see also skiing and martial arts).

I work in science communication - my job involves taking stuff that sounds boring but is actually interesting and making it sound interesting too. Hobbies (beside spinning) include portrait sketching, skiing (oh for a cheaper hobby), Tai Chi, comics, and the usual films/music/books stuff. I hate making favourites lists so here's a random selection of stuff I've seen/read the last 2-3 weeks which I've liked: House of Flying Daggers, the Incredibles, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's sixth season, the new Coldplay single, Kasabian, the new Athlete album, the season finale of 24, Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy (not all of it!!), Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct.

Been in the UK for 11 years now. I used to live in Malaysia but I prefer it here; it's less humid, more culturally fun and I will (probably) not get attacked by monkeys (story for another time). I live with my girlfriend of 3 years in a flat in Barnet (North London) - she's pretty much the focus of my life atm (the girlfriend not the flat).

Ok, enough now. Hope to actually start meeting people soon. Are any of those regular London meetings still on (Spitz? Clapham?).

Nice to be here.

Hi all. Thanks for the greetings. biggrin

Starpoi, mainly just mainstream DC/Marvel stuff although starting to move towards the more oddball stuff they're putting out like Ex Machina and 100 Bullets. You?

Starpoi - would that be the same people who do Johnny the Homicidal Maniac? I've read a few of those before.

Lauz - Ello. Love the art on manga but because of the large panels & low words-images ratio, I find they read a bit too fast. I prefer the images moving smile

Ry - Hiya. Monkey story: our house in Malaysia was plagued by a troop of monkeys for about a year. They were constantly finding ingenious ways to break into the kitchen and nick all the damn food smile This culminated with us getting back from a really nice night out only to find bits of food scattered about the house. I went to the toilet, only to find a monkey working is way through a carton of eggs. He screeched loudly, threw lots of eggs at me and ran out the open window. Cheeky bugger.

Hi lava,

Night's Dawn is indeed superb (although with a second read, ever so silghtly misogynistic). I read them all when they came out and made a start with Reality Dysfunction again last month. But I've abandoned that notion - the plan is to wait for a holiday when I have enough spare time to blitz all 3500 or so pages in a small amount of time. (Possible flaw to this plan is that I'd need the strength of several men to carry the bloody books around with me biggrin)

'Firedance form' - I am intrigued smile

Wow, and I thought this thread was dead...

wave Ello all. Thanks for the warm welcome. hug

Spiralx - Thanks! Spitz sounds good - I'm sorely tempted but am a bit booked at the mo - on holiday to Tallinn and Copenhagen in a week's time. Maybe in July...

Cole - No worries. Hopefully will meet up with you at some point - we can talk more. Oh and your comic writers are my comic writers. But the best thing I've read by far recently is Grant Morrison's We3.

Squarexedge - RHINOS! Definitely rhinos! (My g/f gave me a little soft rhino called George as a make-up present once. Much sentimental value).

Adya - Yes never underestimate the monkeys. They're always planning... ubbtickled

Lava - cheers, keen to hear about it smile
