Top image editing hint: don't do too much. OTT looks awful, just enough looks perfect.

Having said that, try playing around with the filters for some interesting, boring and ghastly effects.

How much time have you got? cause photoshop is an immensely complex program that takes years to master.

What sort of stuff are you wanting to do?

If it is photo manipulation then go for some tutorials.

If it's random strange pics of whatever try just messing about with the filters and effects. I have a couple of pics in my gallery of the things I have been doing with just colours and filters.
PM me if your interested in the sort of stuff I am doing. wink

i found that i can either selectivly desaturat, an area of the ime, thus maiing it bclak and white, or i can desauturate the whole image and then use the revarse brush,to colour back in areas i want.

It's called the History brush I think.

I picked up loads of info from photoshop mags with 'free' CDs. They have good tutorials and the image you need are on the CD. They always help you though new tools etc etc. Also reading the help section will teach you loads. They cost about £6 each but I think it's worth it if you lke the look of it beforehand.

Inverses. Like negatives? Putting a picture in negative is a nice effect. And if I'm thinking the same thing as fathom, then doing it to only some colors is a really good thing too. No clue whats going on with photoshop, i have my microsoft photo thingy.

Don't mind me, just passing through.

i played around a little with separating into either rgb or cmyk, and negative-ing one or more of the plates, then recombining them. some worked, some didnt.

Wow, great links! particulary the first one-might get round to entering that one day! I've been using photoshop for about 6-7 years and I don't know half the stuff it can do! The best way is to read the tutorials-photo tips from the experts if your lucky enough to have photoshop CS 8. For a beginner it really is a case of playing around and trying everything, including all the filters which I find I don't ever use now! don't worry about going ott at the moment, worry about that when you have to do something serious! The most usefull tools I find- the ones I personally use the most are magnetic lasso, dodge and burn tools, the clone stamp(very usefull tool indeed but can take a bit to get the hang of) and also getting to grips with the brightness/contrast and colour balance for starters is important.

Be careful with te RGB or CMYK thing it can cause problems when moving between PC and Mac and trying to print things out. I always use RGB.

Your Linux photoshop is called Gimp wink Actually Gimp is great for anyone, freeware and just about as good as PS, better in some ways.

When you're learning PS you'll go through a couple stages. Playing with filters is going to be one of them but you need to start branching beyond being relient on them. For anyone who's worked with photoshop for very long the people who use mainly filters on their work is plainfully obvious. There is a reason the term 'filter whore' is out there afterall biggrin

Not to worry though, everyone goes through it. The trick is using them for effects, and not making it too obvious.

hehe, I knew someone would say that! Yes, Gimp is very good, but that makes my question even more relevant! (oh, and it's not "freeware" wink )

I'm starting to like Adobe less and less since they got Macromedia - now there isn't much choice, and thats always a bad thing.

gemit, your question is a bit like asking where you can go in a car or what you can do with a paintbrush! Have you got any idea of what you want to do? Are you interested in retouching photos or making textures for a 3D animation?

Ok maybe not quite freeware but freely distributed :P

You're right about Photoshop dominating the graphics world, Photoshop CS2 is out not, and although I haven't played with it it sounds like there are a few very nice interesting features on it. There isn't a whole lot you *can't* do in Photoshop or its surrounding programs, although it is lacking in some tablet use where Corel's Painter wins out I think

Thats one old PS port to linux flid.

I am curious whether it would be worth it, or if people wanted me to write a few uber simple PS tutorials as they relate to fire.. Anything from as simple as resizing and saving for web or up to some nice and easy manipulations.
