i was thinking to myself as i was watching the snooker on tv today about two things.
why is it that all the best snooker players are british or irish? the top 15 players in the world are all british except for one irishman. as its the world champoinships on tv just now you would expect that there would be more players from different countries.
also the second thing... snooker audiences. they irritate me. why is it that everyone must cough after a shot? when one person coughs it sets off a torrent of other people coughing. can they not just take a drink of water? they cant ALL be ill. also thinking about the audience, they clap at any shot, even if its rubbish. if its a poor shot u dont clap!!!!!
anyways back to watching the snooker and i will await for some wise person for answers smile
good day

Can't delete a THREAD once someone else has posted. It'd be way easier for a mod to just move it.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

OK, I'll move this as it's kinda been requested.

As to snooker - maybe because we're the only country that really plays it. Let's face it, in entertainment terms it's not really all that exciting. I don't mind playing the game - but the idea of watching it as a pleasurable activity is alien to me. But this applies to every sport. Each to their own I guess.

mmmm not sure if i agree with you there Dom, except for the last bit. I love watching it, but i always have so maybe that explains it.

For the top 15 players - in snooker the creme de la creme is called the top 16, and at number 16 is Marco Fu, from Eastern Asia. I could reel off all the players from outsdie GB and Ireland who are regulars on the snooker tour, but i doubt you would find it very interesting.

Snooker is becoming a very popular sport now in China, no doubt due to a bright young Chinese talent who i think won the Masters competition this year. It's alsogot a few aussies playing it, but they mainly live here in England.

I ubblove it tho. smile

I love snooker too ubblove

Dom obviously isn't very interested in balls that move around when they're not attached to strings or inside cones rolleyes ubblol

I think it's because the popularity of snooker is at it's heighest in the uk. Compared to rest of the world there are probably 70%-80% British people playing the sport so the cream of the crop will naturally be mostly British.

It's probably the same reason American Football is mostly played by Americans, Handball by Germans/Dutch, ping pong by stoners, Table Tennis by the Koreans/Asia major, Cricket by British/Old Empire countries, Kabadi by Indians etc etc.

Can't wait to watch the rest of the final tonight...it's gonna be brill!

Let's relight this forum ubblove

offtopic Actually, the UK is the only European country I know where handball isn't popular, which means I've really picked the wrong country to study and not have cable/satellite tv frown... [/offtopic]

That’s a BiG statement Dom. I think it's good entertainment watching the great players. Also think the colonies have had a few good players wink

Perhaps they have passed from this world, but Eddy Charlton, Walter and nephew Horace Lindrum were the best in their day. Horace's great grandfather, Friedrich Wilhelm Von Lindrum, became Australia's first Professional Billiards Champion by defeating the English Master, John Roberts Snr. in 1869. Also remember wild motor bike ride into Thai jungle to play snooker with this Dutch guy.

I got sucked into watching a few hours of snooker during my week in Scotland. The fact that Sheffield is the global epicenter of snooker says quite a bit. wink

I found it to be the UK equivilent of watching US bowling on TV: The PERFECT thing to nap to. Nice calm semiwhispering voices and basically the exact same camera angle for hours.

I did enjoy some of the skill involved. But I wouldn't want to watch it without a blanket or pillow of some sort. wink

I got sucked into watching a snooker tournament on TV last year on vacation in eastern Europe - at night trying to fall asleep. I enjoy it, but I don't know anyone else who plays, and snooker tables are few and far between. I only know how to play (poorly) because my English grandfather taught me at his snooty club. It's a vicious cycle - I'm sure there aren't many places to play because it's not popular here in the States, and it won't be popular as long as there aren't opportunities.

And NAPPING to bowling? Doesn't the rumble of the pins wake you up?

Surprisingly not.

The way they air it on TV, it's all white noise. And whispering.
