So he is dieing.
According to prophecy it is the end of the world.

I'm not Catholic so I'm safe wink but other than that, I thought it would make for an interesting discussion.

I've seen a lot of stick about poor old popey on other forums (see https://www.urban75.ney/vbulletin
for example). Personally, I'm not too bothered either way - we all die after all, and he's NO saint - no pun intended.

I think his attitude about birth control sux shite, for example. The last thing our environment needs (at 6 billion and counting) is MORE human beings. And yet I'm fond of the old censored - he visited my school. He clearly is devoted to his faith.

So what eh? I lost my mum not long ago, so I still care a lot more than that about any f'ing pope. (and yes.. I am supposedly a Catholic).

I heard on the news today that he's apparently 'incredably serene'.

I should hope so - with the amount of belief he must have in the afterlife, how could he possibly be worried?

Still, never nice to hear about someone dying, especially in the circumstances he had with the feeding tube and the like.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Oh no not the end of the world again....and I just signed a 9 month lease!

Don't buy into the prophesy. Too much importance placed on a human being. Though I understand the prophecy probably refers to the timing.

I wonder how long pope would have lived if not for medical science anyway.

They've done *alot* to keep him alive out of fear.

So, it is supposedly written that the death of Pope # whatever will be the beginning of Armageddon. I can't remember off hand if it was Nostrodamus or who, but I know several Catholics who completely buy into it. Supposedly a WWIII will follow, spearheaded by some "godless" middle eastern person..blahdey, blahdey, blah.

Now, do you think this might be self-fulfilling?
If he dies do you think that people will kill themselves to avoid the whole apocolypse ending? Though, I think they would go to hell for that.
Since the world would be ending, do you think they planned for a second in comand to move up?
And if it is the "beginning of the end", I think it sucks that we all who are not of that faith would get stuck in the middle.

I don't want this to be a religious (is he correct or not, technically for thier faith, he is and I respect that as long as he doesn't govern over me) debate as much as a simple discussion about the belief that the death of one man is the trigger for life ending cataclysm. I have a really hard time seeing how people believe in that...although, that is why it is called faith I suppose. wink

i beg to differ...he's sooooo old, and can't do much. no one can live forever, and just maybe he's ready for this. i think death can be a very helpful thing, sometimes it's the only way left to go.

When Terry Schiavo died, I wished upon all those who had fought to keep her alive an extended, drawn-out, highly-publicised, and un-dignified natural death.

Looks like I got my wish, mean-spirited as it was.

Gosh, I sure hope they don't do chest compressions on him when his heart stops. That would be brutal to do to an old man.

I think if armegeddon was coming we'd know about it by now. I dont reckon the end of the world is just *bang* and we're gone when someone dies. I see it as more horrible prolonged pain, gaseous fumes, volcanoes and earthquakes. I think it would have started by now.
But if the world does end then i wanna mighty joint to smoke while watching it happen biggrin

i'm kinda glad the pope is dying, which sounds really mean, but hear me out. he's old, he's not having much fun with life. he's had crazy good innings, very few people get to be pope. it seems like every day is a pain to get through with him, so it's good that he'll soon be relieved from all that.

of course, if it was the dalai lama, i'd be in tears. i'm sorry if anyone takes offense, but buddhist are *so* much cooler than catholics, and the dalai lama is a total rock star.

revalations is really fun to read, i want to go be a religious zealot and scream at people that the end is near some day. i had it read to me once while i was quite stoned (one of only three times) and it kinda scared me, but it was really coolish.

The Pope wasn't entirely a good person.

For instance, he was responsible for clarifying the Vatican's stance on homosexuality as an 'intrinsic evil'.

Oh, and continued opposition to the use of condoms; claiming that condoms don't prevent the spread of AIDS - a straightforward lie, in my books, told so that theologians couldn't invoke the Doctrine of Double Effect (which permits wrongdoing if it's a necessary side-effect of preventing some greater wrong) to argue against him.

How you can think that arguing against birth control and safe sex, when millions of people will follow your commands and suffer as a result, is beyond me.

tIn my opinion, religion started off for two reaons...
1) Hope... hope that their is something better than all this.. something that isnt shitty, or unhappy (or, a place that isnt filled with these things).

2) Its an attempt to place conscience on a higher level... its making life easier by placing the idea that god made our morals. A paeus man is an evil one (not nessacerily, but just think about it.. wud u trust a man who doesnt trust his own morals?)
*sigh* Phew, gllad i got that off my chest!
[/rant]

ummmm... as for armageddon, i doubt it happening. Our world will end cos we'll nuke it to death, strip it bare of resources, or it will be engulfed by the sun (a la doctor who).

:shrugs: If it will happen within this week.. do ya reckon we'll get a heads up so we can party like maniacs till it happens?

Well, actually no this does not mean Armegedon. Pope John Paul is not the last pope. The prophecy you speak of is actually part of caniacle decree I believe... The Prophecy of St Malechy.... Well, maybe not caniacle, but accepted.... anyway, this dude in the 1100s took a trip to Rome and had a revelation of the list of all future popes... 111 of them in symbolic names. Something like 90% of them "came true". The Doomsday List of Popes marks John Paul II as the second to last pope. The next Pope, the so called "Olive Branch Pope" is supposed to be the last pope. Many translated this into the Black Pope and there all kinds of weird ideas about what that COULD mean. In any event, he is supposed to convert masses and masses of people to Christianity supposedly... this next pope here.

After which will reign the FINAL Pope, Peter of Rome. After this event, the prophecy simply states that the seven-hilled city (Rome, specifically Papacy Controlled Rome) would fall (The Church would end), which was also in a vision from Pius the X (Pope fleeing Rome over bodies of his own preists).

Essentually, the CHURCH ends, not the world... Theres all kinda interpretations about this one, Peter being the anti-christ, etc...

BUT there is also WWIII coming at the fall of the Church (And 7 years of war, the Apocolypse...) after which the Messiah will return and there will be 1000 years of peace before the final judgement...

Except that Malechy doesn't say anything about peace... judgement is supposed to come with or right after Peter of Rome...

Anyway, there ya go. We're good for about another 20 years actually... Peter of Rome would have to be in by 2025 to follow prophecy correctly. But theoretically the Christian church should fall about then, and all religion returns to primal basic (and personal) spirituality instead of Dogma.... yay! Cept for that whole 7 years of Apocolyptic war thing...

I have to say that I respected the Pope. I didn't agree with everything he said, but he was a man of principle and he truly loved humans and humanity.

He was instrumental in the downfall of communism and worked even before he was ordained to oppose the Nazis. He has spoken out in support of peace and against the Iraq war.

There was much good in him. By very nature of his being Catholic, he and I disagreed on many things, but he was a good man.
