confused Please someone help!

I've read all the previous threads so please don't direct me to them!

How do you actually do flowers?!

What is the breakdown of the movement of your arms? confused

THANK YOU!

Baisc Flower:

Arms are fully extended 180 degrees apart rotating same direction. Pause for 1 beat every quarter rotation (ie 12/6, 9/3, 6/12, 3/9).

If thats not simple enough, reread the other flower posts. Theres tons of info about how to do them and if none of that can satisfy your questions, I dont see how another thread will. The other threads also point to various videos which include flowers which should also be a big help.

I second the thanks. This is a very straightforward, easy-to-understand explanation. More so than some of the other threads, where variations, etc. are discussed. Those of us who are complete beginners are so lost in those threads. To make my point, can I ask for more help that will inspire a 'duh, how stupid can you be' reaction?

What do you do when you get more than 3/4 of the way around the circle? At that point, if you continue, your arms are pretty hopelessly crossed....or at least mine are. Pictures of flowers in the users gallery lead me to believe that you can continue all the way around. Seems this should be easily resolved if you just know what you're doing. So I'm hoping someone will take pity and clue me in. Thanks!!

Sounds like youre doing this in wall plane from a weave or something which is the wrong way to go about it. Do it with your arms at your sides (ie, swing your arms in full circles as if you were swimming) this way, your arms always stay on their own sides and wont cross/tangle.

However, you CAN do continual flowers in weave format but the description for that would get rather complicated.

Wall plane (the wall being in front of me) is exactly what I was doing. Thanks!! It didn't occur to me that the pics posted were taken from the side. Makes so much more sense now. I appreciate your response. What I'm sure is a ridiculous question from your perspective makes a big difference for me.

And I think I'll learn the basic flower and some of the variations posted in other threads before trying it from a weave. But thanks for giving me something to look forward to!

And its really not a rediculous question at all. I remember dealing with the same issues at one time.

See, Kael's avatar (and some other user pics) and the earlier posts by people like ICoN are what got me tangled in the first place! I had been happily weaving around and unhappily struggling with gremlin with no idea that flowers were potentially within my range. I wouldn't have even been trying this.

But many positive side effects have occurred. In order to consistently be spinning that far above my head, I need to be outside, so I found out that the park next to the local museum is open until 10. And [attempting to keep] the planes straight for the flowers has helped my other moves.

Thanks, folks! clap

Antispin flowers with 5 petals aren't exactly easy... hence why you really DON'T want to refer to my avatar.

sorry for the confusion wink

Think about it this way, regular flowers are swimming forward *freestyle with your arms while the poi are rotating forward. Your arms don't atually cross your body. Every 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock arm position your poi should make one rotation and be pointed in towards you.

For antispin flowers, your arms still rotate forwards but your poi ar rotating backwards as if you were doing reverse weave.

Thats the basics of it.

are the poi outside of the arms, as in a normal, everyday weave, or are they inside, like a buzzsaw?

outside helps you to not hit your head every time the poi reach the centre.

but if you can do them on the inside, you could well lead the way into flowers with pauses and tangled sections...

i'm definitely not gonna learn them before you... smile

one arm does extra beats (or a pendulum if you're garthy) in one position to allow the other arm to catch up or separate.

i.e. the pause is used to change the angle between the arms.

NOW you tell me they aren't easy! I've figured that part out on my own! rolleyes

My problem is that my poi are not rotating forward; they end up rotating one forward and one horizontal, usually at the 6/12 position. This is an operator error due to the inability to watch both hands at the same time. One that I hope will resolve simply with more practice so that these rogue hands do not need to be constantly monitored.

thankx

you obviously don't for just pauses.

but i said "flowers with pauses and tangled sections..." and you'd be hard pushed to get your poi to tangle if they are in wheel planes on opposite sides of your body...

munkypunks - when you get round to working on antispin flowers, learn them one hand at a time.
and do that for ages.
i reckon learning both fwd-fwd and rev-rev flowers would help.
but i can't really say as i can only do fwd-fwd and fwd-rev (fwd being poi spin direction). shrug

*...must learn rev-rev and how to turn flowers at some point...*

Thanks, maybe I should try that now, with just basic flowers, only doing one hand at a time, but it seems to be the attempt to coordinate the two that cause the problem. It'll come. I just don't get the chance to practice these as much as I'd like b/c I can't do it at home, ceilings aren't high enough, and I have no yard. I may just have to go out in the street...neighbors be damned....

Ah, I spin fire poi in the middle of Glasgow (I figure no one will dare attack me if I've got fire flying around my head). Find a local park or a car park somewhere! I still can't do flowers though, at least I know how to do them now! ubbloco

I found out last weekend that the park at the museum is open 'til 10, so insto-presto - poi field! Do you spin fire by yourself? I've never seen anyone light themselves on fire - well, burn themselves badly, I mean - but I figure with murphy's law as soon as I practice actual fire by myself, I'll be up in flames. Is it safe?
