the same goes for staff . ( i could do with some of those )

its just a good way for many to learn and i know a bunch of my friends arent members here so they dont know all about the vids section , besides thats all for demonstrators ...

I think the idea is, if you REALLY want to learn new moves, you'll put in the time, effort and willpower to search through the millions of move threads until you find you understand. Or just use the "Events" section to meet up with the super-spinners.

But I agree. Anyone chance of some new educational vids Malcolm?

I think that the animated gifs make it easier to learn than just texts..I would love to see tutorials for the butterfly weave, the fountain, the flower, etc..

Yes Please. A decent five beat video and some more stuff. I'd like to see a fountain and gyroscopes and things. I think this would be so good - cos it lets you see what the instructions are telling you and you need that.

Let be honest..

the btb 3 beat video is rubbish.

smile

Erm.. There are some tutorial sites on the web somewhere with advanced stuff.
I guess I have never really learnt from lessons, more just getting out there and playing lots.

Its more fun that way really...

I agree. Poi has become much more advanced, some newer stuff would be nice. Especially for those people who have to learn all by themselves.
Many people come to HOP for the first time because of the lessons. It would be sad if HOP would lose its reputation on this side . . .
Addiction for everbody !
Id like to offer help if needed.

I may be tempted to say that the lessons are you people who are only picking up poi or visiting this site for the first time.

Once you have the basics, you should be trawling the boards for new stuff, as well as getting out and meeting people

Thats what I think anyway.

you new people learn too danged fast already, so no new tutorial animations on butterfly weaves or anything else!

Now go home and practice by yourself in complete isolation for years like us real HoPpers (being under 1000 in member number) had to.

Being comepletely isolated in my spinning by at least 3 hours in any direction I understand why people would want more tutorials but having had to work so hard to figure out new moves from the boards was very rewarding. From so much practice trying to get moves down I think it helped me develope alot of control. Also it helped me create my own style or adaptations i guess. I'm like a Galapagos turtle I've been in isolation so I had to come up with my own style and interpretations of moves. So i guess I say leave the tutorials as they are and give people a bit of a challenge. I haven't been posting here much in the past 6 months but I think it's about time I started again since it tiz such a nice place.

yea - i agree with what your saying SAFE, but i think it would be more of a thing to help lazy ppl along. i don't think its absolutely necessary. if you really want to learn a move you'll trawl through posts and look up other sites and vids to see other ppl doing the move.
and while i would love to see an advanced tutorial section, cause i am one of the afore-mentioned lazy ppl, we have lived, and could live without it.

thanks for the input all ... i like the way some ppl agree and some disagree biggrin its very interesting !!! overall i think the consensis is , that ppl (like me) and maybe just too lazy ?!? fair enought smile i agree , however my direction on this topics is one of ... well , ok ill try to make this short ~

my friends and i ,when we first strated learing together in south africa about 3 years ago. we would check the HoP website everyday !!! it was our new found passion . and it was the only way we could learn , back then there were just the two of us . once we started to master the basics , others were like "wow thats so cool , can you teach me ?" so we started teaching our friends what we had learnt. and so the story goes ....

now i live in charlotte NC USA , there are like three poi'ers in this town ! of which i regulary meet with one of them to teach him all that i know . my creativity levels are far less than others , i have only just recently tought myself the butterfly weave ...(which im not convinced that its 100% correct ,due to the fact that i have nothing to base the correct movements off of )

i guess my point is that , even though i might not be creative , or interlectual (learning poi from word , is very difficult for me!) i can still be inspired by what someone else is willing to teach ! it is also very satisfactory knowing that i am indeed working on the correct move rather than my "creativity or interlect" ubblol

thanks for being understanding and taking the time to view my point of observation biggrin

i disagree. work it out yourself - its more challenging, but more satisfying in the long run.

if your afte more complex move, download some vids - sure, they dont spell things out for you, and you have to work things out using your own brain. spinning isnt easy, so dont expect to be spoon fed all the way.

cheers. biggrin

Downloading the videos and watching them helped me loads.

Just seeing different variations of basic moves and how they are linked together opens up a whole new range of ideas.

There are other sites where advanced kids can play.

I like HoP the way it is.

I also agree with, and am guilty of, the fact that one shouldn't learn moves too quickly. If we start throwing "How to do a 7 beat BTB weave" we're going to have even more newibies with a bucket of advance moves and absolutely no fundamentals.

I agree nyc having a strong basic knowledge has helped me greatly. I use all the basic moves to link more advanced moves togther. Also nobody should forget you can put on a very very impressive performance with just basic moves. It all depends on your flow and control over the poi.

in my opinion stringings about your own original stuff/moves. I was taught the basics, and then my friend said "alright man, i can't teach you anything else, you gotta make up your own stuff from here on out. Strings are half about inventing your own stuff, wrap em on every body part you got and put em into combos, then put combos into runs. And that's what you perform." Best piece of stringing advice/lesson that i've ever gotten i think. The basics you learn, the advanced stuff you earn. Make em up and wrap em on every body part you got, be original and don't take someone else's lot. smile

Clean for 6 months and counting... ah yeah, that's nice.

I dont want to promote superadvanced lessons.
The Problem with most lessons, including the ones on HOP, is that moves are shown, but the basics are not explained/stressed enough.
Some examples: The lessons on this page have high and low turn, but do not explain the basic turns in front of the body. A 3 beat weave is explained but not a 2 beat.
I was surprised how many people on the EJC could spin 5 beat hyperloops, isolations etc. but had real problems with a 2 beat weave.

It would be nice to see lessons who show you what is possible and you can combine that and invent according to your own style and interest. Some concepts that could be added:
Show what a clean isolation is
Show what a thru-wrap is
Show what a hyperloop is
Show what throws are possible
Stress that you always can work on every move and how to do that
.....
These are not advanced moves but rather provide a broader set of basics

Dont teach style, teach possibilities

im siding with NYC and malcolm here. learning to spin isnt easy. taking things to the next level is much harder.

ive done it, and am now glad that ive taken my learning slower. firespinning is as much about personal growth as technical growth for me.

sure - things arent spelt out for you! welcome to the real world. take the effort to learn about new concepts rather than just asking for videos.

poi and firespinning is about creativity, not copying, and from personal experience, theres is more than enough 'basics' posted to get you on your way.

seriously. go out the back yard now, do some basic moves, and try doing something differnent. trying wrappng a poi around a limb and working out how to turn so it unwraps. try throwing your poi, and just see what happening - in front, btb, changing hands.

for wraps, check out glowsticking vids. or just look idly through the poi moves forum - but most importantly - experiment! where can you change direction with a wrap?

trust me - when you take spinning to the next level - where you can do all the basics, and you begin to understand the langueage in the tech forums, you realise that there is all the ideas you need -but your expected to work on things.

for concepts like isolations, it took about 4 months of part time experimenting to get it right. but that 'click' when suddenly it just works is worth all the hard work.

likewise with contact staff. at the start its completely bewildering - but take the time to check the vids, work things out yourself, and learn the language, and youll find a whole new community out there.

good luck!

Respect !

do get me wrong i deffinatly didnt want to be spoon fed ! yet as many others have also explained , i think that most people just want an idea , just something to spark that interest , something to say " wow i think i could figure that out " the only problem that i have with that concept is that i am unable to view those videos that might show that ... 23mb is a long time on dial up !

i total respect all that everyone has said , and i thank you for sharing. i have come to my own conclusion , and i think im just going to buy the COL 5 to spark my idea's off of .

true i dont belive in copying styles or signature moves , but ive been on this plateu for 2 years now , its time i get moving forward biggrin

thanks biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin
