So I'd just got my life sorted. Today was the first day of work, and I really enjoyed it, although I'm not working as many hours as I'd like...

then I get on the net and find an e-mail telling me they've decided to move one of my things so it;s slap bang in the middle (and busiest part) of my working day.

So what can I do? I need money to stay at uni, but I need to go to uni as well. And I can't do another day at this job - they really need me when they've put me down for.

This sucks.

What a wonderful miracle if only we could look through each other's eyes for an instant.

Sometimes a uni will help out by offering the course on a different day, with a different lecturer, or if you're very nice to the lecturers, maybe they'll offer to give you a personal tutorial for the period you've missed - explain about work and they should be able to get something organised.

They should bring back grants.
How can you get a proper education while you are having to work and worry about stuff like this?
It's outrageous.
And I am outraged on your behalf.

I've spoken to the course secretary - there's another group but it's on the same day at an even worse time. I'm just going to have to tell my work that I can't do it, which they're obviously not going to like! But I'll speak to the tutor lady and see if we can arrange something... thanks for the idea Firepoise! And for the outrage Lillie - I agree! Everyone here has to work, and it usually takes priority over study because without study, OK, you fail, but without money you get homeless and can't eat. You can't win!

what are the terms of your course? If it's full time then whether you work or not, they may have already specified the hours in which you should be available. At my uni it was 9 till 6 every day, despite not having nearly that number of lectures. If you happen to have friday free of lectures, it doesn't mean that they won't spring an exam on a friday.

That's a good point... I'll have to check that.

The thing is my job's at the university, not in an academic department.. but hopefully they'll be understanding and try and fit me in. If they can, that is - obviously they have these vacancies, and they need them filled.

is the job with the student's union? If so you may well find them quite accomodating - they may moan but you certainly won't be the first person to have asked to change hours around lectures.
