well i can understand the frustration - but at the end of the malcolm is probably looking at videos at face value, with little consideration of your or anyone elses history, teaching, or performance resume.
some people are on col5 you taught? oh well. thats the way it goes. most of the people i teach end up better than me... *sigh*

I want to know why I am not on the list!!!!! I am Livid, But trying to Keep my Cool! Was it to long? If so cut out a few parts I don't have to do my Double and Single Staff Routeen, Or just cut out my Poi... I don't under stand? Please PM me and tell me what is UP!!

yeah good point Leif - a lot of extremely talented people dont enter COL, but still achieve infamy (er fame wink) by sharing their vids in the non-competitive websharing method.

Well I just got a nice compforting pm from Melcolm, and feel alot better.
I didn't do this for fame, It just took me a few years to finely get my sh!t together, get a pro to do the photo-shoot, and an editor to edit the footage. I could put it online, but I would rather keep my moves to myself now. Can't wait to see what the outcome of COL5 is though.
Its just hard when you have been here since the start of the websight, watched it grow, and flourish, and then get shot down. I feel my enthusism for the sight all these years has been for nothing. I have seen its ups and downs, this is just a downner for me and I may be back. Most of the best Dancers I know, don't even come here. I just like to check in once and awhile.
Good luck to you all,

Hi FireSpirit, you must of seen some interesting changes to the site over the years, along with alot of interesting people coming and going. (hopefully more coming than going) you are obviously a true fan of this firey art form, and yes COL5 sure sounds like its got some great performances on it. Please dont feel that you have been "shot down" as you put. If you try looking at the other side of the coin you may see that there are more positives from this experience than what you thought. Im sure you have put a lot of effort into making your video, hopefully you can still show the footage to friends, family etc or place it on the internet for others to learn from as this is what I think the COL series are in part about anyway, learning, sharing and displaying the different styles etc .
Hopefully you dont actually feel that it was all for nothing, Im sure you have some very helpful and handy hints to share with this community that you have been a part of for so long.
I personally get a good positive vibe when I do teach those around me a twirling routine, I find that this is what it is really about, sharing lessons and teaching others who havent maybe got a certain routine sussed. I know for me if it wasnt for others I wouldnt know half the routines I know now.
This isnt supposed to be a negative or judgemental reply to your post at all. Just trying to throw a different point of view into the mix.
Hope you hang around a while longer
Happy twirling. weavesmiley

dont take this the wrong way but grow up, so your video didnt get picked for col big deal its not the end of the world. you obviously put the clip together for the love of the art and sharing so that doesnt have to change just because you didnt get on col. the whole im gonna take my bat and ball and go home cos i didnt get picked as the best egotistical attitude is the sort of crap attitude that stops the art as a whole from progressing

its a competition based on the video you send in not your enthusiasm, its not a popularity contest its nothing personal against you

FireSpirit, it would be a shame that no-one will get to learn from all the effort you have been putting in for the last 6 years, what does it hurt to share the video over the net? I've been here as long as you, and I still share my skills over the web. Strugz over at www.sotonfirespinning.co.uk would probly be more than happy to host your vid.

I simply dont see how it detracts from the quality and work you have put in to share your vid over the web and not on COL? cant you see that your contribution would be even more selfless if you shared it over the web? You say you didnt do this for the fame, and yet you wont share unless in competition?

Well first I should say I'm sorry about the Whole "Most of the best Dancers I know, don't even come here. " thing ... I don't really know all of ya folks, and your quality of dancing... I let my ego go a bit, and Im sorry.

As for compeating... , I'm not a competitave person at heart, (even though I ski raced for 10+ years), its still taken me a few years to even get up and get taped. Also, alot of what I know came from hard work travling the US, and collecting from the best of teachers... "Seek the best instructor, and let them come to you..."
I guess it was ment to be, that I didn't get in.
Its also frusterating to see as well, how fire-dancing has grown so much over the years, to almost being a 'fad to be cool'. It was a graduation gift to me, from a dear friend who has since stoped teaching, and put down the art because of the whole "Trend". As for me I love the fire, and will dance with it for the rest of my life. I know its a sharing thing, but I feel that I should maby keep what I know to myself. I have learned a ton more over the last summer traveling, and my teachers may not like the fact Id be spreading it around... (Most if it on vidio, that I don't even lend out). Call me stuck up or rude, but thats just the way it is. I can't wait, however to see what you all on the vidio have got to offer... cool

ok so thats just one big contradiction right there your telling us all these great teachers have taught you but now u dont want to share with everyone else? seems very selfish

um its not theirs no one owns knowledge thats the beauty of it

so its ok for you to learn from others but not for others to learn from you? just remember if these great teachers with their secret moves who taught you hadnt shown you them then you wouldnt be at the stage you are at now .........

FireSpirit- I've made up loads of moves in spinning, but I doubt that any of it is original. If new stuff occurs to someone then the chances are it'll occur to someone else, especially now spinning is so well established and so many people are doing it.

If you want to keep your moves to yourself, then that's fine, you're under no obligation to share. But maybe you should reflect on what I mention above- that those moves will come into the world via other people; the creative force can't be stopped.

At least if you do have something new, and you do share it, you will maybe be remembered as the person who introduced it into the community.

But, like I say, it's up to you.

I hope you're feeling better about not getting on COL and that you won't feel too negative about some of the posts on this thread.

I am going to have to agree with Ben-jamen and onewheeldave. On top of this I would like to note: I think that there are a good bit of people who have reluctance in showing off their "original moves". But honestly in consideration besides other spinners and their active fans, who is going to know that what you are doing is an "original move" anyhow (without having to tell them)? Being an inspiration to others in your league (be that spinning, baseball, card playing, etc.) is a large factor in recognition/fame. Although you deny this desire, things you state imply otherwise, and who is going to claim that they would not enjoy recieving some recognition or props for their skills? Probably some smart alec who will post after me. tongue

yeah dude - heaps of people I know (including myself) have spent years travelling the *world* learning about twirling, not just in our own country, sounds like you've had it easy.

In my experience, only people who are ego-involved (ie base their self-esteem on perceptions of their skill level in a given endevour as compared to peers) and harbouring a deep seated fear of inferiority are unwilling to share their experience.

All of the best fire spinners I have met have been happy to share, and it sounds like you have had the same experience.

That stray cat never came into my home, after being so warmly invited. I was bummed out at first (I have so much love to shower upon her!) but I probably didn't want to live with her anyways, she's so catty. Of course she'll still eat the food I put out at night when nobody's looking. Oh well...

No, but really tho...

I too know the sting of disappointment from submitting a video and not being chosen (COL4). It was a humbling experience. I felt embarrased cuz I had told all my friends that I sent in a video and then didn't get on COL. I felt defeated. It was a broken dream and I have emotional attachments to my dreams. It was a lesson to me to try harder and keep the dream alive, even if it meant I had to wait a whole year or two even. I'm stubborn and determined that way.

a rather strange post no?

i do agree on move sharing, and this is where i seem to always get miss quoted, or miss interpreted, i dont agree on style coping

i dont agree that ppl should stydy a move in a vid to the point that they end up copying the move exactle, and incudling teh style, ie the flare at the end, or the hip movement that makes it an individual performers

i do agree however that moves should e shared, and tought and traded, and copied and learned..and all these things! hug
