gah! this goes to everybody who is a performer of the fire arts!!

quite a while back i posted some pictures of myself blowing fire and got random responses back from it. well....recently some kid saw the picture...later this kid contacted me full of questions and was pretty hellbent on trying to do a blow, being conciencious of safety i wouldnt tell him a thing except that he didnt need to do it and that he shouldnt do it.....well...the damn kid went ahead and did it. he went out and got some gasoline out of the garage and attempted to blow fire.....what he was using as a torch i have no idea, but he screwed up..badly...the kid set himself on fire and was in the hospital for a couple of days...his parents sent me a VERY pissed off email when i personally had nothing to do with the incedent.

moral of the story is...be responsible people...theres alot of impressionable young kids out there, most of whom dont understand the dangers that go along w/ the fire arts.
be safe...be responsible...and ALWAYS have a safety
things are going to happen..doesnt matter how much you prepare..

That sux about the kid's parents trying to blame you for their bad gennetic code.......its not your fault this kid got burned.........some people should not breed

You can't avoid pain by fencing yourself from it.
Some times you need the help of others more than anything else
But you have to let them close enough to help......
People want to be needed, I found that out too

eeek! damn kids, a while ago when i first started i didnt really believe all the hype about how dangerous it is, but people really shouldnt underestimate it has got to be one of if not that most dangerous things you can do with fire, fire is an extremely powerful element and its such a shame that so many people treat it with disrespect, they dont realise that everything we do it does take lots of practise and even then every single time we pick up our poi, staffs, stick or anything, we are still taking a risk no matter how pro you are.

but look on the bright side, at least that kid isnt going to be doing it again soon smile and yeh lucky you didnt get sued!

Wow...I knew that people could be stupid but not that stupid. Just a little thing to add to that. If you can avoid it don't spin/twirl/breath around drunk people. They one, think they can do it, two get to close, and three won't let you handle any situations they way you need to. I was spinning at a friends party and his "security" desided that it was a bad idea. Yes he was drunk and an [censored]. I was in the prosess of putting my poi out so that I could use them after I went and talked to my friend about the drunkards and the dick pours sand and dirt on them...mixing with my fuel damn near ruined my wicks. Needless to say I was pissed. So in onther words, yea stupid people suck...and the only thing worse than a stupid person, is a whole bunch of 'em. biggrin

Its an awful thing that happened to that kid but from what you've said it could have been prevented. If the kid seemed completely adamant about breathing fire then you probably should have told him everything he needed to know, which fuels, to practice with water first etc. etc. and told him all the dangers in full and maybe shown him or emailed him a copy of Pele's story and the safety sheet on this site. If someone is that determined to do something they're gonna do it regardless of whether or not you tell them not to.

Telling a young, impressionable kid simply not to do something that he has seen a picture of you doing, is hypocritical of you. This probably would have made him even more determined to do it, if he had known the safety aspects and the dangers, he possibly (hopefully) wouldnt have ended up in hospital.

I'm not having a dig at you at all but i just think that the kid wasnt 'stupid' he was just misguided.

Yeah i'm pretty much with Beth.
Remembering myself as a youth (all of between 6 to 12 years ago) smile I know that when i got an idea in my head about something, there was absolutley no way of ever getting it out of their. When i wanted to skateboard of a ramp over the car and dad said no, all that happened was i crashed my board through the car window when dad wasn't their. The fact that i didn't know how to skateboard didn't really occur to me till way after the event happened.

All i'm saying is that if a kid is deadset on doing something 19 out of 20 times he is gonna do it anyway.

What happened was in no way your fault, you expressly told him not to do it. But yeah, next time.......you know what i'm trying to say.

Lots of luv

i agree. i think back to being young and immpressionable (not that i'm not STILL young and immpressionable, but that's besides the point!!) and i often tried things because when i asked about how it worked or whatever, all i'd be told was "nevermind, just don't so it" if i had been told the good the bad and the ugly, maybe i wouldn't have had so many accidents. but then that's sort of laying the blame on everyone else, when it my own damn fault for trying something i was told not to to begin with, so whatever. mebe these accidents can be avoided, mebe not. but learning how something works can only make something a little less dangerous, right?

thats really unfair guys, i mean darkpoet told the kid not to do it, gave the kid the website, and still he obtained petrol/whatever now surely its the parents fault for leaving that stuff around and not under lockand key. also if the kid was 10, he shudnt even know that you can use fire for this sort of stuff

just me, my lighter and a lifes supply of paraffin

I don't think that Dark poet is in any way responsible for the actions of a child that isn't even his/hers. In any situation like this there's a lot of what ifs...what if he gave the kid lessons on how to do it, would it have been safer? I doubt it. What if the parents had been notified of the kids intent, would the kid have not tryed it? I doubt that too & who would have thought the kid would go out to the garage & try it with gas. I belive that dark poet did what was best at the time and telling a kid how to go out & do something like this could have gotten Dark into more trouble with grounds to sue on harm by negligence. If it had been my son asking the same questions and Dark had given him all the info to go out and try a stunt like this, I would have been furious and there would have been hell to pay. I wouldn't however have held Dark responsible for my son's idiocy in having tried something that "looked cool" but was warned against, which is what Dark did. Driving a car off a cliff or jumping off a building might look cool in pictures too, but you don't see kids trying these stunts. Most kids are smart enough to leave this stuff to the trained, pros, & adults. Besides, there's no going back now & we can't blame Dark for trying to be cautious with the situation. At least he cared enough to think about his actions, which is all we can ask of anyone.

Never settle for normal.devil

never said the kid was 10...(was around 13 or so) and ppl your taking this WAY out of context..lol i just posted the events the occured to increase your awareness of how people are, you dont usually think that somebody will be stupid enough to try a stunt like that w/o proper info and instruction...and btw...he tried it w\gasoline......all im trying to say is that performers we have to take things like this into mind, and BE AWARE THAT STUPID PPL ARE OUT THERE! like a fungus...they're everywhere and wont be going away any time soon

so the moral of this story is:

play safe kiddies, and make sure to be responsible and aware

oh! and as a further note ive been spinnin in daylight and had people ask if it was real fire......as well as people trying to grab the "pretty lights"...yeah...crowd control is equally important, yet another reason why you ALWAYS have a safety or 2

darkpoet- don't feel bad- u can't prevent stupid poeple from doin stupid things. That kid should have never even attempted that stuff, but he did it anyways. Just know that I am sure he learned his lesson about playin with fire without the proper training.

fire is the light that shines in all of us. Be sure your light shines brightly wherever you go.
