my name is donovan and im from south africa , however i currently reside in charlotte nc. i learnt to spin at a camp for kids in SA from a very good friend of mine , we started with dog leashes the chain ones, with spark plugs on the end wrapped in bandages . man we were crazy ... those things hurt like hell!!!
anyways we got it going eventually and the camp realy liked it , so we bought a couple rope and sandbag poi and started teaching the kids how to do it . it was great ... these little 10y old girls would pick it up so easy, like picking up a penny off the ground, you put a smile on your face and you just keep moving forward, crazy!
so now ive been spinning for a couple of years , nothing great , just for the pleasure of it and the entertainment of others. ive dabbled in a bit of staff as well , thats good fun , other than that just spin when ever , where ever!
now i live in charlotte (think i said that already) but i dont know if there are any poi people nearby??? if your near lemme know .
by the way all the stuff i use , i made myself (except my fire poi, easier to get someone else to make it at that time!) so if you got any q's about poi or staff making , i'd be more than willing ...

anyways .. cheers for now chat later...

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

hi there!

I lived in south africa last year. near joberg in a hellish little city named Potchefstroom.

Er...I hope you aren't from Potch... redface I'm guessing you are from Durban though given one of your posts in a different thread, so I think I am safe. wink

nah, not from SA, just lived there for a year, doing research and supposedly teaching at the university there - though that wasn't very well thought out since I don't speak Afrikaans, which meant I could only teach grad level classes since all their undergrad classes are still Afrikaans. Wish I could have been in Cape Town or Durban - people were much more to my liking there than in the hochveld boonies...

Anyway, I'm was basically in SA and now Germany because I am at a point in my career where it is easy to get short term contracts in various places and see the world from a different perspective than I would staying in the USA. And Potch was an excellent base to see southern africa from (spent more than 1/4th of my time travelling when I was there ), even if I was bored to tears when I was home (and the restaurants in Potch suck!!! - another reason I wish I had been in Durban or the Cape!). Berlin is a bit more entertaining (both the social and culinary aspects) thankfully! Don't care for the weather in Germany though...

so enough about me on your thread though - let's hear some more about you! tell us about the fire scene in ... er, what city exactly you from in SA? and how long are you in the US?

well ... i grew up in pietermaritzburg... its 45 mins drive inland from durban ... i learnt poi at a summer camp , then started teaching kids at camp to do it .... good fun watching kids bang themselves up ... (haha) but also good from the point that they can pick it up realy quick ... i was amazed at how much poi did for my ambidextriousness(as you can see i cant spell!) but wow hey my left arm and hand finally became a part of my body !!! not just an attached limb! from there is just kept on going ... and when i was tierd of the poi , i picked up the staff to see what i could do with that?!?!?! they work well together , once you understand how motion and gravity are combined the rest is easy... anyways so i carried on going ... however now im at a plato , cause i have no ambition to go further , nor anyone to push me ... i know that sounds like a realy bum .. i know ... but hey , i enjoy it still and im still doing it for kids entertainment at my wife's ymca camp .... i got my wife doing staff over Christmas of 2003, she did batons in high school , so she have an idea of what she was doing ... she did realy well ... way cool pics ... speaking of which i would like to post some photos , any help on how i would go about doing that ??? HoP says that you have to post 20 threds or something .. ... ??? i dont know ... anyways .. .... yea so life goes on in charlotte . im here for about 2-5 years now my wife and will decide where and when we need to move somewhere else. or not ??? we'll see....

so thats me ... cool q's keep em comming ....

so what sort of spinning do you do? As in with poi do you play with tangles and hyperloops and such and for staff do you do contact? I hit a few plateau's too but I always seem to meet up with folk at the right time and learn something completely new that changes my whole spinning and helps me mould it into something new.....until the next plateau sneeks up on me! eek
